The parallel suggests activity, side shows, clowns, and robot performers. But try as I may, I cannot vievv today's teacher as a Hringmaster. Rather as a leader seeking de- velopment and worth in each student, even if dis- guised hy clowning or other adolescent mask. 10 2 f' X 1 tariff ll gi rl 4 Head Barker, Walter H. We hope this class also will achieve hy its initiative character and ultimate vocational or pro- fessional skills the high standards of performance in life ex- emplitied by thousands who have received their diplomas here. What each student is to he some dax in the circus of life he is now becoming in the daily circus at school and it would he well to ascertain periodically how well he measures up to the best standards. Yes we the class of '54 have come to the end of our high school days and leave the hallowed halls of Queen Anne to take our places in America's future. lt has been a great four years for all of us. We have had fun and good times, but we realize, also, that our experiences throughout these four years have given us new knowledge and understanding which we will need to be good citizens of tomorroW's world. As we take our final look at Queen Anne, we pause for a while to recall some of the out- standing performers whom we will always remember for the part they played in the senior year of the class of '54. We will never forget Allan White and Jim Suzuki who headed our class as Senior Class presidents . . . Phil Gallaher and joy Vanasse as Boys' and Girls' Club presidents . . . Bob Green and Connie Jacobsen, who promoted student government through their leadership as Student Council presidents . . . Bob Sankey, who presided over Honor Society . . . Storm Jobs, John Simpson, Tom Nordstrom, and Margaret McMullin, who served as KUAY Weekly Editors in Chief and headed a staff which faithfully put out the KUAY . . . Carol Morrison, who was Editor-in-Chief of the annual and saw to it that the GRIZZLY of '54 is one of which the Senior Class can be proud . . . David Smith, Frank Bracher, Jeannie Lauckhart, and Joan Nielsen, who took the leads in the Senior Play . . . Bill Hartley and Marilyn Isenhath, who played a big part in making Kapers a success, as Senior directors . . . Bob Sankey and Barbara Black, who received the Phi Beta Kappa award given to two Queen Anne students with the best combination of activities and scholarship . . . Bill Hartley, who brought recognition to Queen Anne by winning the state-wide Voice of Democracy Contest. COMMENCEMENT SPEAKERS ,,., ,f i n Phil Gallaher Beverly Hemb Barbara Block Bill Hartley 20 f -. Seated: Ann Greenwood, secretaryg Jim Suzuki, president. Standing: Kerry McMahon, vice-presidenty Jerry Wuhlquist, treasurer. We will also long remember the Queen Anne championship football team bolstered by all-city lineman Swede Wilson and Phil Gallaher, and all-American high school honorable mention Quinn Redeker . . . Dwight Hawkes, Bill Marston, Tom Allen, Connie Jacobsen, John Flood, Ralph Vanni, Art Snyder, George Varver, Larry Morrow, Bruce Buckley, Bob Edenholm, Jan Rietman, and Malcolm Swanson, who also lent their talents in the various athletics on the Hilltop . . . Jim Alexander, Allan White, Ernie Filtz, and Kerry McMahan as yell leaders and ,Iana Bardsley, Barbara Black, Sally Harrison, Kittie Dittmar and Marilyn lsenhath as song leaders . . . Kerry McMahan and Mae Elbrandt who were King and Queen at Ski Acres on Queen Anne day . . . Jim Suzuki, who was Club president and was chosen on the Japanese all-American high school football team .... Many ofthe events of our lives at Queen Anne will stay in our minds for a long while. We will no doubt always recall the first day that we came to Queen Anne . . . the first date with that special boy or girl . . . the first final exam . . . the many assemblies . . . the P. T. A. dances . . . the first trip to the vice-principal's ofiice . . . the Senior year in general . . . the Lincoln-Queen Anne game in which Swede Wilson kicked a field goal with thirty seconds remaining in the game . . . the Senior Dinner-Dance . . . the Senior Assembly . . . the Senior picnic . . . the Commencement of '54 . . . and last but probably most, the Senior Prom. Yes, our high school days have been glorious ones, but with four years on the Hilltop completed we must move on to meet the new challenges of life. Before we leave however, We wish to especially thank the faculty, our parents, and Mr. Baker, our class advisor, for their much appreciated help. Now we must take our final departure to make room for the class of '55 . . . So long, it's been good to know ya! Farewell, THE CLASS OF NINETEEN HUNDRED AND FIFTY-FOUR. Ambition: Jim knows! x The boy was very small and the day was very young. He'd seen these activities before but today the excitement was mount- ing because this was the 1974 reunion of the greatest show on earth! His eyes darted busily around . . . Ladies and gentlemen! Step right this way, cries barker BILL HARTLEY. Just one thin dime to see the nuttiest, X61 misplaced and displaced characters ever loosed from bedlam- FRANK BRACHER and KERRY MCMAHAN, the Sunshine ! I l ' Clowns! Peanuts, popcorn, crackerjacks . . . shouts vender JOHN SIMPSON, passing out old KUAY's as he pushes his way through a crowd dotted with struggling reporters searching for their Big Story : WENDY DOWNIE and STORM JOBS, covering the big top, and MARGARET MCMULLIN and PAT CONNOR, reviewing the side show, while the flash bulbs of PAUL LEWIS and ROGERS CARRINGTON add to the confusion. Yes, the circus has come to town, bringing with it the most outstanding bareback riders of the world, JANA BARDSLEY, BARBARA BLACK, KITTIE DITTMAR, MARILYN ISENHATH, and SALLY HAR- RISON, former Kuay balls of fire. And, for the first time in America, the greatest novelty sensation of all times, the talk of two continents-the incredible, the debonaire TOM NORDSTROM, with MAE ELBRANDT, JO NOMMENSEN, and PAT FABRICK bringing their unbelievable achievements in aerial skating! A magic carpet from Istanbul, not Constantinople, lands in ring one under the successful handling of Ali Khan ERNIE FILTZ bringing a harem of vivant, beautiful, thrilling dancers, JOAN NIELSEN, GAIL MONTE, BEV HEMB, BARBARA TINHOLT, and MARCILE THOMAS. Bursting forth from who knows where comes the fanfare of the circus band led by DON MITCHELL and backed by that ever popular tuba, bagpipe, and two clarinet quartet, JAN RIETMAN, BOB SANKEY, TOM ALLEN, and SHAROL LAWSON.'They announce the arrival of a not soon to be forgotten spectacle: Grizzlies RALPH VANNI, PARK GOIST, PHIL GALLAHER, BILL MARSTON, ART SNYDER, and BOB GREEN jumping through hoops in ring two. The spot light falls on ring three where a stunning aerial ballet is under way. QUINN REDEKER, the Falcon of Flight, takes to the air and swings toward his lythe and agile partner, SWEDE WILSON. Bouncing on the trampoline beneath them are JOHN FLOOD, GEORGE VARVER, FRANK FORREST, JIM SUZUKI, KEVIN FRENZEL and CONNIE JACOBSEN. Hold your hats, folks! Here they come again! The Clowns-rolling JIM ALEXANDER, toddling TINA FOSS, jumping ANN GREENWOOD, singing CORKY THOMPSON, tumbling ALLAN WHITE, and revelling IRENE CHARLTON into the hippodrome track. The birds' MALCOLM SWANSON and DWIGHT HAWKES, wings flutter and flurry as they are madly pursued in Operation Cuckoo by CAROL MORRISON, GAIL MORRIS, JOAN KIPPER, and JERRIE STEWART. And into the center ring come the heavy lumbering elephants trained by the world's greatest organizer, JOY VANASSE, and ridden by the most gorgeous girls in the universe, CARROL SUTTON on Jumbo, SUSAN JONES on Tanya, JEANNIE LAUCKHART on Tiny, and JUDI MOUNGER on Bessie. The small boy, hearing the barker's voice, turns for one last glance at the side show and the midway. He sees LARRY MORROW giving away three balls for only one quarter, BOB EDENHOLM selling novel- ties and curling irons, and JANICE WAGNER giving away cupie dolls to the highest bidder. He sadly turns his back on all this excitement and leaves for home after a big day with the greatest show on earth. The Student Council has been growing, growing in leaps and bounds. This year the representatives have increased the activities and planned reorganization of the Council to include representatives from all active organizations in the school. Under the direction of Bob Green, president, the Council drew up plans to change the method of electing class oflicers. With an overwhelming majority, the school voted that all candidates must run for specific offices and oflicers must have a majority vote. The Council also changed the point system to limit the number of major activities one person could be in. This was done to enable more capable people to participate in activities. The assemblies were improved and presided over by the president. He provided flag bearers and a color guard for each assembly. An open council meeting was held because many students wanted to improve the student government. This meeting laid a firm foundation of new ideas for next semester's Council. 66 A up X9 'fi v I! ig I X 0 S-X V E9- - S i 'ix' i xnriv i , es - G99 f .ludl Mau Tom Nord Marilyn We .lim R: Kay Fly Fred Me CCUNCIL reel lxs 'Eff N J T SSX -57,,,,,.................,....aa I C' 'aff ,c LQ :ni T I 'rle Sfewarf llph Vannl ny Mclean Iehn Cole lary Lewis io Galvagno Conrad Jacobsen Student Council officers: Jim Cook, Ralph Vanni, Betsy Mclean, Jerrie Stewart. Connie Jacobsen, second semester president, willingly accepted the big job that lay ahead of him. The method of raising money for the afiiliation exchange was planned. The ideas of expansion that the first semester gathered were organized and sifted as to their practicality. One such improvement was enlarging the council. The ever familiar and undescribable T Day came in the second semester when the men were masters and their slaves, the women, fell on their knees at their approach. The familiar T Day ribbons, the T Day dance, the girls with piles of books, the court where all rebel girls were taken, were all parts of Tolo Day that no one will soon forget. Mr. Charles Parke, the Student Council advisor, had his hands full with this busy bunch. 67 ! . , l . The Father-Daughter Dessert with its mustaches, the Mother-Daughter Banquet with its southern belles, the all-girl parties, the pom-pom and apple sales with colorful banners, the middy and creed drives, and the largest activity of the year, the Girls' and Boys' Club week, Christmas Carousel, with the reindeer on every door, made this Girls' Club one to remember and to be proud of. This year the Girls' Club originated a Mad Mad Middy Day with a final Miss Middy crowned in the Girls' Club assembly. The crazy decorated middies gave the school a festive air. Also the Hve friendliest Senior girls were chosen and be-ribboned in the assembly. The Girls' Club has had a very busy year. Their main objective was to promote interest among the girls and to include everyone. The enthusiastic Cabinet members and willing workers sent the Girls' Club down the road to success. 70 BOYS' CLUB 1-an 'W' Bob Edonholm Phil Golloher Bill Morsfon Firsl Vice-president Presidenf Second Vice-president Pork Goisl Mr. Arsanlo George Varver Secretory Advisor Treasurer The principle aim of the Boys' Club this year was to have the club participate more actively in the school. The achievements seem to prove that this aim was realized. The annual book cover sale and the distributing of pamphlets about the school constitution to new boys began the year. Then the Boys' Club maintenance commit- tee under took one of the biggest projects of the year. They renumbered and painted the number squares on study hall desks. This committee also took the job of redecor- ating the Boys' Club office and making minor repairs on the furniture. The Boys' Club combined with the Girls' Club to produce the colorful Christ- mas Carousal week when both clubs helped decorate the school. Both also were in charge of the P.-T. A. dance the following Saturday. The Boys' Club has had a very active year and club has expanded into school activities and given service to the school. 71 BOYS' CLUB COUNCIL 5,-M hwy i..-A First row: Jim Alexander, Wayne Boyack, Bob Buzard, Rogers Carrington, John Coie, Jim Cook, Mike Copass. The first vice-president has control of the G men committee, a clean up squad in the lunchroom, He also is the head of the social service committee which sends cards to sick members and the School Service committee which ushers at school functions and began the hall patrol. The second vice-president is the representative from the Boys' Club in the Club, linking the two to ether. g The tutoring committee provides boys who do well in certain subjects to help others who do not. The new boys committee functions to help the new boys at Queen Anne get acquainted and adjusted. Both of these committees are under the direction of the secretary. Publicity and maintenance are the two committees headed by the Treasurer. The publicity committee gets articles in the KUAY and generally advertises the Boys' Club. The maintenance committee helps keep the school in good order. They painted new numbers on the seats in study hall, arranged tables in the lunchroom, and cleared the halls of out-dated osters. These questions and others were whirling through the minds of a fascinated .l l , audience which was watching the Queen Anne Student Play of 1953, Pride and Prejudice on the nights of November 20 and 21. Under the directorship of Mrs. Bernice Duncan, a hard working cast of twenty-six students answered these questions giving a very entertaining performance to all who were present. Among the personlities was found Mrs. Bennet, ready to announce the engagement if any male so much as looked at one of her five charming daughters' 'Elizabeth, Mary, Catherine, Lydia, or Jane. Her husband, Mr. Bennet, had endured twenty-five years of marriage only by his wonderful sense of humor and understanding of his dear wife. Mr. Darcy, the good-looking hero, and a rich, proud man, simply melted whenever he was in sight of Elizabeth, the heroine of the play and Mr. Bennet's favorite daughter. 78 PLAY SATURDAY NIGHT CAST Mrs. Bernice Duncan Mr. Bennet ..,,...,......,....,..,.....,. Revolving around a troubled mother, Mrs. Bennet, the story relates humorous experiences while she tries to marry off her five daughters to any likely bachelor. The members of the family put on airs so as to attract desirable suitors who include Mr. Darcy, Mr. Wickham, Reverend Collins, and Mr. Bingley. Authentic costumes gave a vivid picture of England in the nineteenth century with the girls attired in full skirts and leg-of-mutton sleeves, and the boys Wearing cutaway coats. Sideburns and mustaches completedlthe costumes for the men parts to add a very authentic touch. The music and stage were set for the production with the hne help of the orchestra under the leadership of Mr. Edward Ottum and the stage crew under the direction of 'Mr. Clyde Burmaster. Combining their efforts with strenuous, but rewarding work, all who participated in producing Pride and Prejudice gave a line performance to an audience of many parents and students. 70 ACT DIRECTORS AND ACTS Lynn Dowling. . . . . . SENIOR BAND With Mr. Edward Ottum waving the baton, the Queen Anne Senior Band added color and music to many of the school activities. At the sound of the whistle the band steps to order. Under the direction of the high-stepping drum major, Don Mitchell, who is also the president, they march down the field making many formations that will remain long in the memories of loyal Grizzlies. The memorable Thanksgiving Day Football Game, in which the band gave a spectacular performance by helping KING TV celebrate its fifth birthday, certainly deserves mention. The band surely promoted much school spirit during the football and basketball season with the before school pep rallies. The Santa Claus Parade, KING TV's Christmas celebration, and carols played in the halls before school and during study halls, all were a part of their various activities. In March the band again brought notice to Queen Anne by playing in the Band Jamboree held at the Civic Auditorium. It performed at the annual Spring Music Concert of Queen Anne and had the distinction of being the only Seattle High School Band to enter the Memorial Day Parade. Concluding a season of playing for assemblies, Dad's Night, and at Open House, the band played the traditional Pomp and Circumstanceu at commencement. Elected to work with Don Mitchell were: Anne Woolsey, librarian, Sharene Ernst, secretary, Wayne Boyack, business manager. Selections in the repertoire of the band include Poet and Peasant Overture, Under the Double Eagle, The Stars and Stripes Forever, 'iOn Wisconsin, AleXander's Ragtime Band, and Bartlesville Boogie. ln bringing renown to Queen Anne, the band has certainly played its part. 82 Xt X s efggx sigye .fp as M 2 ss X at , M N X , V Y , . The purpose of the affiliation between two schools is to establish a better understanding of the life and customs of the American school and of the affiliated school, and to put into practice the idea of the oneness of mankind. Through the exchange of letters and projects which create an exchange of ideas, the students and faculty can make a step toward increased international understanding. The committee has been working hard to get an affiliated school for Queen Anne and current plans include an exchange student to come to Queen Anne next fall. 96 X. J X! This is the lirst year that the Club has been represented in the Student Council. As they have done in the Past, the Club worked in conjunction with the Boys' Club to provide ushers for the football and basketball games. Changing over from the old conventional style letter assemblies last year, the Club carried over the idea of talent-packed and impressive assem- blies. The football assembly featured Stan Boreson, entertainer, and Bill O'Mara, sportscaster. Then, talking from backstage, Coach Clark told a little bit about each boy as he stepped between two maroon and gold goal posts. For the second time in as many games, the male faculty defeated the football players in the annual Club-sponsored faculty versus football players basketball game. The proceeds from the game went tothe Alliliation- lixchange committee. The highlight of the year was the lirst annual all-city lettermen's dance which was held in January. A stalwart defense halted every-opposing offense in the city by allowing only 16 points throughout the year. Only one team scored more than seven points against the Grizzlies. The forward wall totaled over one-half a ton, and Coach Clark often added more weight when needed. Phil Gallaher, 185- ound all- city end and Connie Jacobsen, the second best looking athlete in the city, held down the end positions. Quinn Redeker, two-year all-city l l tackle, Tom Allen, a rough competitor, and Larry Pulford, the Kuay Couch Dick Clark kicker, held down the tackle positions. Duane Swede Wilson, three-year letterman and two-season all-city guard, and Milt Hans- berry, stalwart Junior, provided the punch in the middle of the line at the guard ositions. John Flood, 195 pounds, filled the center spot on the offensive line. All but two men on the grizzly line mentioned received all-city recognition. These immortal Titians combined speed, hustle, 190-pound average, and aggressiveness to puncture every opposing forward wall in Seattle. Redeker, Wilson, Allen, Hansberry, Jacobsen, and Gallaher all played over 95 per cent of the total playing time of the season, which tops three hundred minutes. The Queen Anne backfield balanced the overwhelming power of the front line. Dwight Hawkes, inspirational winner and quarterback, masterminded the crowned Kuays on offense and defense. His strategic decisions took advantage of his teammates' positions, producing several triumphs for the Hilltoppers. ,lim Suzuki, all-city halfback and team captain, was the scatback of the Grizzlies. Following in his father's footsteps, Pete Hanson was statistically Queen Anne's most valuable back this season. The hard-driving junior led the league in rushing and total offense. Deceptive George Varver, who held down the fullback spot as a blocking back, produced excellent blocking so that other speedy Kuay backs could cgain immense yardage through the course of the season. Since the Grizzlies lacked the needed detpth behin the starters, very few substitutions were made, all the backfleld men played over 90 per cent 0 the total time of play. Lincoln gave the Grizzlies an opening-game scare as they held the Hilltoppers scoreless until Swede Wilson booted a 23-yard field goal to win in the last three minutes. The victory was costly as Larry Pulford, might tackle, separated his shoulder while making a flying tackle. The Kuays took full advantage of their power by crushing the Garlield Bulldogs, 26-13. Besides bowling over for three hard-earned touchdowns, Queen Anne picked up six easy points when Quinn Rcdeker picked up a loose ball and galloped 18 yards to score. Cleveland was no match for the victory-hungry Hilltoppers who scrambled over the goal line four times while holding the Eagles scoreless. The next three tilts found the Grizzlies lacking the scoring punch, but continuing their stout defense. The Kuays slipped by Ballard, 6-2, Franklin, 6-O, and Roosevelt, 6-0. . C h I. R Sch ll The last game of the season matched Queen Anne with the oncc- occ e oy U defeated West Seattle Indians to determine the Seattle title. The iron men from Grizzlyville refused to lct their victory streak be marred by crushing the Westsiders, 7-O, to win the crown. N g K 105 VARSITY BASKETBALL COACH RAY NO RMILE Rogers Carrmgior The Queen Anne Grizzlies, after the longest basketball schedule in city league history, closed the 1954 casaba season in sixth place. Prep basketball in Seattle featured several new innovations this year, including the lengthening of their schedules to fourteen games, the switch from the crackerbox gyms to the more roomy playing surfaces of the junior high and Seattle Pacific College gyms, and having two teams represent the city league in the Class A State Basketball Tournament. The Seattle High School Basketball League proved to be a very tough one this year, as Franklin and Garfield finished OIIC-EWU respectively in the State Class A Hoop Tournament at Edmundson Pavilion. The Grizzlies improved in 1954 over their '53 record as they climbed from seventh to sixth place in the league. ln their opener, the Kuay hoop squad lost to the Garfield Bull! dogs 49-29, at Seattle Pacific College gym. Phil Gallaher chipped in 10 points to lead the Hilltoppers. The Grizzlies were handicapped by the loss of fireball Bill Marston. ln their second game the Hilltoppers, inspired by the return of Marston, overpowered Ballard 54-41. Center Phil Gallaher paced the Grizzly scoring with 21 points, while Marston tallied 15. ln the next hve games everything seemed to go wrong for Coach Ray Normile's quintet, as they lose in succession to West Seattle, 64-57, Franklin, 70-50, Roosevelt, 60-58, Garfield, 61-55, and Lincoln, 56-50. Sporting a record of one win and six losses the Hilltoppers got hack in the groove lay nning three straight games. ln turn they topped Ballard 56-55, Cleveland 72-45, and West attle, 60-45. Two main factors contrihuted to the Grizzly winning success during this time. One of csc was the high scoring of Gallaher, Marston, and Ralph Vanni. The other was excellent fensive work hy Dwight Hawkes. However, both seconds and thirds finished in a better place than their elders. The second team started off strong by winning five of their first six games, but dropped a few along the way and ended in third place. Coach Milroy's third team had the same record as the varsity but finished one place higher. At the end of the first round of play, the second team was in second place with a 5-2 record. They lost the first game of the second round to Ballard but went on to win the next two from Cleveland and West Seattle. Despite losing the next three games they finished the season with a high note by dumping Ballard 85-60. A small squad, they made up for their size in accuracy and speed. Dean Reid, Ken Mickelson, and Jack Nilles traded off at the guard positions. Rounding out the team were John Reardon, Bob Hibler, and Don Bolstad forwards, and John Grover, center. Even though they had a few men in thc 6-foot class the third team met plenty of trouble. After finishing the first round with a 3-4 record, they could only beat Cleveland and West Seattle in the second round. They finished the season with 5 wins and 9 losses. Grizzly students will long remember this year's yell team and the fine job they did. Always behind the team, even in bad weather, the pepsters often shed their shoes and sloshed around in the mud and rain. The girls, not to be outdone, came up with the best idea for rainy day games that the school system has seen in a long time. The song leaders changed to pedal pushers during the stormy weather, and thus reduced the stains and soil that the uniforms get by the end of each season. The boys' squad was aided by three senior veterans, Jim Alexander, Kerry McMahan, and Al White. New members were jim Cook, Gary Knight, Van Zefkeles, and Ernie Filtz. The highly spirited song leaders, had only one veteran, Marilyn lsenhath. Jana Bardsley, Barbara Black, Nancy Parsons, Kittie Dittmar, Alice Simpson, and Sally Harrison all worked with the boys in making the Homecoming celebration the big deal for this year's yell team. Former song and yell leaders were invited to come back and lead the students at the Homecoming celebration. Because the basketball games were held in larger gyms, the leaders turned out and kept the spirit there also. Seeming to pull out of their early season slump, Coach lVIilroy's nine are hoping to put on the steam and clinch a first division spot. The Kuays boasted six returning lettermen, two of whom are pitchess. Bob Hibler, Junior pitcher and letter-winner, handled most of the pitching duties. He was backed up by Ed Hule, Senior letterman, Bob Sankey, and Bob Lamborne Seniors. Dwight Hawkes and Larry Morrow shared the catching position. They were helped by Herb Whitney and Ed White. V The outfield consisted of captain Ralph Vanni, Don Fisher, and Fred Grant. Sophomore Tom Coupe also worked in the outfield. With an infield of three veterans and one transfer from Lincoln, the Kuays are supposed to have one of the best defensive teams in the league. Bruce Buckley and Chuck Tarbox held down the first and third sacks. Pete Hanson, one of the league's best hitters, traded off between the shortstop and second base positions. Larry Morrow, back from last year's team, played shortstop when he wasn't handling the catching duties. Marv Bell, Dean Reid, and Bill Fronk also saw action in the infield. The Quakers put 21 damper on the Kuays one game winning streak hy holding them to no runs while they collected live. ln the last game before the GRlZZLY went to press, the Grizzlies came to life as they scored live runs in the last of the seventh to heat West Seattle six to live. Hoping to finish better than last years' 6th place, they started of? in the right way by beating Ballard 6-3 in a practice game. The infield consisted of Bill McClay at lst base, Alex Ford at 2nd, Gary Knight, short stop and Glenn Campbell at third, all sophomores. The hard-hitting outfield was Gene Jones, Woody O'Rourke and Martin Skelly. juniors Tom Wells, Gary Shansby, Bill Foster, and Walt DeBoer were expected to take care of most of the pitching and catching duties. They were helped out by George Snyder, Ken Ewing, Jerry Thommasen, and Dick Grandberg. The team was managed by Brent Smith and Tim Mullins. Third row: Don Leo, Bob Cheney, Dave Hendrickson, Ed Melbourne, Ken Ewing, Jim Ful Bill Foster, Brent Smith. .l l 5 INTRAMURAL Under the direction of Mr. Erwin Henkel the intramural program offered year-round sports activity to both junior and senior high school boys. Since it is not selective, it can reach and benefit all those who wish to take part. As in the past, basketball has drawn the biggest turnout. During the fall, both the main and portable gyms were open and used regularly. The eighth grade, freshmen, and sopho- mores each had their own league while the juniors and seniors were combined into one. ln total, there were over thirty teams that participated in the four leagues. Also some of the boys used the back playfield for touch football. ERWIN HENKEL, Adviser In the winter, the gym was sometimes open for scrub basketball, but most of the activity was in the outdoor sports like soccor and football. Teams were organized but their schedule was hampered by the snow and rain. Softball was the mainstay in the spring and Henk expected to organize a league with about eight teams. The gym was kept open for those who preferred badminton, volley ball, tumbling, or wrestling. To wind up the intramural season All Gym Day was being scheduled for about the middle of May. This is a day set aside to give the boys a chance to break gymnastic and calisthenic records set by former Kuayites. 113 I - I l l r l l l l l l . l l Delayed by cold weather and hindered by a school-wide plague of flu, the Queen Anne Grizzlies did not disappoint the experts and finished as expected, The team strength was weakened by the loss of All-City meet veterans, Jim Suzuki and Larry Pulford, who were declared ineligible via the Ninth Semester Rule. The race to watch this year was the mile, with lettermen Bob Edenholm, Kerry McMahan, Al Kartess, and Frank Pittman carrying the brunt of the load. Edenholm ran well this year, and is one of the best milers the Hilltop has seen in a long time. Frank Bracher, Ken Baker, and John Laughland were the main cogs in the 880 Machine this year, and were followed by Dick Smith, Sophomore speedster. The 220 yard dash was well run this year by Dale Fredricksen and Tom Allen, and the third position was constantly open due to close intra-squad competition. In the 100 yard dash, Bob Parks, Dale Fredricksen, George Owner and ,lack Nilles led all the way. This same quartet was the main body of the Relay Team. Dale Fredricksen, Bob Parks, and George Hutton were constant pluggers on the 440 squad, and looked good in the middle of the season. First row: Owner Mehner, Dale Fredericksen, Dave Dysart, Jerry Shierk, Mike Copass, Jack Drexel, Jack Nilles, Kerry McMahon, John Laughland, Frank Bracher, Dick Olson. Second row: Dick Williams, Gordon Latimer, Chuck Carlson, Bob Rois, Dick Parks, Bob Edenholm, Bob Parks, George Owner, George Marshall, George Varver, Larry Turner. Back row: Dale Fitzgerald, Bob Duford, Ken Mackey, Alex Kartess, Bob Shelton, Bruce Russell, Ken Baker, Bob Buzard, Ellis Westphal, Ernie Filtz, Scott Hubert, Kevin Frenzel, Bob Green, Larry Pulford. ll-l ln the hurdle department, the Grizzlies did especially well. High and low hurdlers were Dave Dysart, Jael: Drexel, llolw Rois, and Bill Swain, transfer from Ballard. In the lieltl events, the Grizzlies emerged hetter than average, and piled up the necessary points in most all Ille meets. George Yarver, Kevin Frenzel, Carl ulones, and Boh Shelton were the Shotputters, and were ahly coached hy l,arry l'ull'ord, four-year veteran. Ken Baker, distance stalwart, did not not plaee his time on just one event as was shown hy his efforts in the Pole Vault. Also vaulting for the Thinelads were Larry Turner and Pete Bathas. 'laek Drexel and Harry Quinn and Kerry MeMahan were the High jumpers, with Drexel carrying the main load in all meets. Fighting it out for the top positions in the Broad jump werejaek Stone, Junior, and Bolw Buzatd, Senior. The Grizzly Track Team was one of the hest for some year, and has several letter winners coming hack next year to add strength to the Bears. COACH LOUIS FISCUS TENNIS The 1954 tennis team will have to rack up a championship to keep pace with last year's outstanding racket squad. With five of the first six men from the '53 Seattle tennis championship squad graduated, Coach Louis Fiscus will have to rely on lettermen Larry Mounger, John Wall, John Coie, Jan Reitman, and Jon Kettenring to furnish the big racket guns for Queen Anne. Since swift improvement is Queen Anne's best and deceptive weapon, Joel Pipe, Don Bolsted, and Pete Craig have steadily shown vast refinement in their games, and will fight it out for varsity positions. John Woodward, Freshman, Roger Tucker, Senior, and Lee LaFollette, Junior, will bolster the reserve strength of the team. Although Garfield is rated as the team to beat, Queen Anne, with some well-placed breaks, can retain the coveted tennis crown for the second straight time. They sponsor the after school turn- outs. Miss Pauline Thomas, affectionately called Tommy, by those who know her best, works side by side with the girls to see that everyone has fun. Basketball, Baseball and Swimming are the three main sports. There is a sport for anyone who has the time. Each night of turning out is worth points! Girls can become members of the Club by accumulating five hundred points, The first five hundred points entitles one to a Baby The Big is awarded after earning a thousand points. After fifteen hundred points have been accumulated, the chevron is awarded. After chevrons have been received, each one earned by additional points, the Baby Grizzly Bear is awarded. Marylin White, Club President, ex- plained, Turnouts this year have increased and we hope that more girls will find the time to come down to the gym and join us. This year the Club has been increasingly active in the school activities. Many parties and events were held to interest girls in sports the Spooks Spree and the Faculty vs Club Basketball Game. This game turned out 21-14 in favor of the Clubers. Of course, said Marylyn. The club meets after school and goes bowling or swimming together. This fall they found time to make dozens of cookies which they sold at lunchtime. The Queen Anne girls were the hostesses to an all- city letter women's conference on December 8. Constitutions ofthe groups were discussed and refresh- ments were served afterwards. Come down to the Gym and join the fun is an invitation that Marylyn White extends to everyone. GIRLS' Q CLUB INSPIRATICNAL Marylyn White was chosen as the Girls' Club Inspirational winner for the year of 1953- 1954. Marylyn, a Senior, well deserves this honor, for she has been an active participant in sports since her Sophomore year. Marylyn has quite a collection of emblems to show her interest in all types of sports. The first of her three Big was earned in 1952, her second one in 1953 and the third one was presented to her at the Mother-Daughter Ban- quet this spring. She also received her Grizzly emblem then. A chevron goes with each won. Friendly, capable and hard-working, Marylyn was elected President of the Club for two semesters. In addition to this office she is a member of Cabinet and has worked in the gym as basketgirl. Marylyn has done a lot to make the Club thrive this year and has truly been an inspiration to those around her. BASKETBALL Each year the Basketball Inspirational goes to a girl who has shown team-work and has mastered the hoop-art. This year, Arlene Kruse was chosen. Archie, ajunior, is skilled not only in basketball, but also in many other sports. A turnout wouldn't be a tournout with- out Arlene! Since her Freshman year, Archie has turned out for sports. She earned her Baby in 1952, her first Big in 1953 and her second one was awarded, along with the Grizzly em- blem, at the Mother-Daughter Banquet this spring. The Club members elected Archie to serve as sergeant-at-arms in her Sophomore year and she has served as vice-president for two semesters in her Junior year. Helpful, fun-loving, Archie will continue to be an inspiration to those around her in her Senior year. INSPIRATION ARLENE KRUSE 119 5 i digg saw . A if 5 .- X X X TQ Sm SPORTS DRILL TEAM ARCHERY fi?
