I have been asked by the Annual Staff to write about ships of old-it is easy-to think of British ships and the names Drake, Hawkins, and Frobisher. Everwsince the sinking of the Spanish Armada in 1588, the British ships and the British poundfsterling have cut a wide swath in the affairs of the world. British ships have enabled forty million Englishmen to rule a fifth of the world's people in an Empire on which the sun -has never set. British ships for three hundred and fifty years held together the British Lion's restless brood. ,A - 1 ' - In World War ll, America built and manned the biggest and toughest fleetgthe world has ever seen. While the Spanish Armada numbered 120 ships, the American Grand Fleet' numbered 11168 fighting ships with a naval operating force of over eightffizhousand. Perhaps any one destroyer of that Grand Fleet could have sunk the entire Armada. But that Grand 'Fleet is mostly in moth balls now. In his final report th'e chief of naval operations statesithat a-t this time CNovemberj, the number of fighting ships is down to 268, to be reduced ,to 2Q7,by next summer. Britannia would never have ruled the waves for 350 years by similar reductions. Meanwhile, Stalin with fixed purpose and goal to go moves full steam ahead to increase each branch of his armed might, nor is he in the least forgetful of his long range, high speed, radar proof Schnorkel submarines.
