LUTHER Principal Uur Alllllliil is dedicated to Dream School. As a realist, l am most interested in dreams that may come true. This School has had its fair share of dreams come true. The School Board's dream of a high school situated hcrc that would in time serve a large and populous district has come truc. although the Board was severely criticized by many Seattle citizens at that time for placing thc Queen Mme lligll School so far north. Many years ago Queen Anne had a dream that did not come true until this year, and then in a different place. ln the gully on the north side of the hill below Mellraw Street Bridge, Queen Mme dreamed of a gigantic concrete outdoor amphitheatre and athletic stadium that would seat 35.000, and recommended detailed plans for this to the Municipal Plans Commission. This stadium could have been built for one-seventh the cost of the football stadium at the Civic Field. But the line new Civic Field will mean a great deal to all eight high sehools. Uur dream of an annex to the original building came true in l928. This annex brought us a new gymnasium. some fine modern classrooms and best of all a new auditorium and stage facilities second to none in the state. We dream to have in the near future a new gymnasium with seating uccommodations for our largest basketball games. Finally. our greatest of all dreams has come trueanamely that. thousands of youth should here rcceive purposeful training and go out into the world of affairs, most of them unheralded and unsung. and take their place in life and slay put and keep America,s free enterprise moving freely. --0. L. Luther 8 - MR. FARMER Vice Principal 1 I 0ur students are a cross-section of unexcelled American youth. We have loyal public and parental support, a well-trained professional staff, experienced successful leadership, and excellent school spirit. We prize our records of past accomplishment and of ever-increasing alumni achievement. We dream of modern, well-equipped shops and laboratories, a modernized building, gymnasiums for boys and girls, and increased playground space. May we have vision to dream of ever-extended ideals and goals to keep pace with ever-changing societyw As our dreams come true, Queen Anne becomes the real dream school indeed! -George S. Farmer. The Carolyn Barclay memorial award will be presented for the Iirst time this year and hereafter it will be presented annually by the former students of Miss Barclay to the student showing the greatest journalistic ability and promise. lt can be said, however, that all these inspirations represent the tops at Queen Anne, and are a credit to their school and community. QUIIN ANN! 12-ROOSIVILT 0 The spunky Grizzlies opened their season by dumping the heavy Teddy eleven 12-0. After a slow start, the Kuays scored twice in the second quarter. Lowell Knutson and Lee Amundson led the team in this gameg Lowell suffered a shoulder injury late in the game and was lost for the SEHSOII. QUIIN ANNE 6-BALLARD O Despite the costly loss of Knutson, the Hilltoppers made it-two in a row. Three newcomers helped the Kuay cause in this game. Halfback Don Doran and fullback Donn Larson from Broadway, and halfback Bill Storie from Stadium of Tacoma made their new alma mater proud of them in this tough tussle. Storie galloped 47 yards for the only touchdown of the afternoon. QUIIN ANNI 24-CLIVILAND 0 Queen Anne was too strong for the gallant Eagles and the Kuays smashed to a 24-0 triumph. Bob Lajala played a superb game intercepting 3 Eagle passes and also looking good on offense. 106 QUEEN ANNE I3-WEST SEATTLE 0 The shadows had fallen over the West Seattle Bowl, and the Field Judge's gun was in his hand when the determined Grizzlies finally came to life to score twice in the last two minutes of play. Outstanding in this 13-0 triumph were Paul Whitcomb, Tom Hardin, Don Doran and Lee Amundson. QUEEN ANNE 0-GARFIELD 0 The Grizzlies battled to a 0-0 tie with the Bulldogs. The injury-riddled Grizzlies played good ball but couldn't master the punch to capitalize on numerous scoring opportunities. Guards Harry Hunt and Jim Chidgey worried Pup backs all day as their stirring line play brought many a fan to his feet. QUEEN ANNE 0-FRANKLIN 6 The hard-hitting Quakers handed the Hilltoppers their only defeat of the season as the Grizzly was stopped cold. The Kuays played gallantly, and Gus Kostakos was especially outstanding. QUEEN ANNE 'I3-LINCOLN 12 The Kuays finished in a blaze of glory, stopping the mighty Lincoln Lynx to the tune of 13-12. The whole Grizzly eleven was marvelous as they showed Coach Nollan, Eddie Colman, Elbie Beamer and the rest who the real champions were. Two long gainers caught the Lynx asleep in the fourth quarter and the Grizzlies overcame a 12-6 deficit to win. 107 eccwwl W Nc. M of - jk . JL L 1 T - I ' LOG 'ily ,ya . - . ,, . The Kuay third team, held back by numerous injuries, Iinisheal a fairly successful season in fine style with a win over the Franklin Quakers at Howe Field. Coached by Bill Tooler Briggs, alumnus of '45, the Kuay scrubs were sparked by such soph and frosh players as Bob Garvin, Bob Bergere, Hoy Bathum, Glen Werner, ,Joe Kolmer and Kurt ,Jacob- son. The hours of work and sweat these boys put in every school day during the season are necessary if they want to elevate themselves to the first team when they become Juniors and Seniors. II2 Q A fter winning their opener from Franklin, the Subs lost to the Lincoln squad, but eame right baek to thoroughly trounee the West Seattle Indians. 'l'he llilltoppers finished the first round by losing three straight verdiets to the Garfield Bulldogs, the Ballard Beavers and an inspired Cleveland lfagle aggregation. Upening the seeond round, the Grizzlies sank Franklin onee again and lost to the Lynx in the seeond half. Upsetting the Garfield Bulldogs after giving the West Seattle Indians their seeond defeat by the Kuays, the seeond's winning streak was halted by the Ballard shingleweavers. ln their last game of the year, the Kuays showed the best that they had all season in dropping a close eueounter to a varsity-fortified Cleveland squad. Not winning any games during the regular season. the liagle first team barely edged the fighting Kuay seeonds. .N remarkable fact was that the Subs lost most of their defeats by less than five points, which with a regular eoaeh eould have probably been turned into vietories for the Orange and Maroon. 113 2 -L-W ? -..-...-4.W........,..v....,.,....-.......,.. ., . at ,M tt, 'Q - W. .. . fi, fiat , sv X- . . . . Im-xperieuee proved costly to the Kuay cause in several games, as errors and unearned runs were often the margin of difference. GARFIELD 6-QUEEN ANNE 3 Although tiny Dick Clark pitched a beautiful four-hitter, a home run by .l. R. Savage in the third inning with the bases loaded was too much for the Kuays as they dropped their first game of the season. FRANKLIN 4-QUEEN ANNE 3 While Bob Lajala was striking out ten, the Kuay infield defeated his efforts with seven errors, and the Quakers slipped by the Grizzlies four to three. 114 sung. LINCOLN 12-QUEEN ANNE 3 Scoring three runs in the first and five more in the second, the .Lincoln Lynx completely outclassed the Hilltoppers as they handed the Kuays their third setback. lllllln 1-QUEEN ANNE 3 Coming from behind in the second inning with a three-run outburst., the Grizzlies went on to take their only victory to date. CLEVELAND 1-QUEEN ANNE 2 Punching across seven big runs in the fifth inning, the Eagles handed the Grizzlies their fourth setback in five starts. Little Jim Foley, a converted shortstop, hand- cuffed the Hilltoppers, giving up only three hits. IOOSIVILT 'I-QUIIN ANNE 0 In a tight pitching duel between Bob Moen and Bob Lajala, the Teddies edged the Kuays by a single run. At the time of this writing, Bob Lajala, the only Kuay hurler to win a game, has been put on the injured list for the remainder of the season. The ladder rating of the first eleven players was as follows: Dean Peterson, Greg Martin, Bill Repir, Mike Sheets, Dick McMurtrie, Jim F urber, Bay Albano, Jerry Kirk, Don Kiser, Dick Elander and James C. Klobucher. 7 A lack of experienced golfers has been some- what of a hindrance to the divot diggers thus far this season as they dropped their first two contests to Ballard, seventeen to seven, and Lincoln nineteen to five, before overcoming the comparatively weak Cleveland squad eighteen and one half to five and one half. This year found many Queen Anne students taking advantage of the first year of real post-war skiing. Early snowfalls found extensive improvements on all ski terrains from the Cascades to the Olympics. The greatest boon to the high school skier was the reopening of the Milwaukee Roadis Ski Bowl at Hyak, Washington. This gave students who do not have access to cars a chance to enjoy the winter sport by boarding the train at Union Station and riding directly to the snowfields. This also provided the opportunity for the Times and the P. T. A. to re-open the free ski school which taught thousands to ski before the war. The lessons, which were designed to teach the novice controlled skiing, were given every Saturday by the Ken Syverson Ski School. The first meet designed for high school students was the Giant, at Eastern Slopes, sponsored by the 10th Mountain Division Alumni. Out of a field of 56, A.'s Herb Shinn tied for ninth and Dick Morgan brought in 20th, followed by Herb Smiley, who was twenty-fourth. The second meet was the regular Prep All-City four-way combine, which was sponsored by the Seattle Ski Club at the Ski Bowl. On the first day of the two-day meet, Herb Shinn made two 62-foot jumps with one fall off the C hill to bring in tenth in jumping. On the fourth jump of his life, off the hill, Dick Morgan landed for a 56-footer, which earned him twelfth. Later in the day, over a rough down-hill course, Queen Anne was handed a setback when our best time was a 3:01, twenty-fourth turned in by Dick Morgan. Gus Kostakos was eleventh. After the points were added up, Queen Anne had taken fourth in a field of eleven. On May 3rd, the ski team took off for Mt. Rainier to participate in the P. I.-Washington Ski Club sponsored Junior Silver Skis. On the whole, this year has proved a very profitable one for high school skiers-for competition and pleasure alike.
