It would be hard to think of anything nearer or dearer to the hearts of youth than athletics, particularly competitive sports. As this is being written we are opening our season of spring sports following a city tournament playoff in basketball in which, according to the sport writers, the Queen Anne-Broadway game stole the show and was one of the fanciest games of basketball bombarding of the season. This followed a football championship, which is the most coveted prize of all for youth. 'llow fine a thing that our youth has these opportunities for recreation and pleasure. With the success of the recent bond issue. we look forward to a fine new football stadium at Civic Field so well suited to serve the sport convenience of the schools and public. We look forward, also, to a new gymnasium with ample seating capacity for the school community to enjoy watching a basketball game. We also look forward to more recreational room near the building. Youth is coming into its own. UTTO li. LU'l1llE'll, Principal. 10 To PATTERN a message along the lines of the athletic theme of this yearbook leads me to laud the morale building values and the learning of teamwork involved in our athletics. The whole school profits in many ways from the program. High School youth in particular gain from the wholesome outlet provided for their abundant physical and emotional energy. The thoughts and feelings of many of us are aptly expressed by the poet, llenry Van Dyke. But let not wisdom, scorn The hours of pleasure in the playing-lielfl: There also strength is born, And every manly game a virtue yieldsf, GEORGE S. FARMER, Vice-Principal. ll W. O. ELEANOR IORNS A GRADUATE of llighlinc College and the University of Washington, Mrs. Eleanor lorns came to us as the girls' advisor and director of the girls club. In this capacity she is well remembered for her direction of the No Doubti' booklet which has proven so popular as an etiquette guide at Queen Anne. After serving as an able girls' advisor for many years, she took a rightfully earned trip to South America where she made a study of foreign languages. Mrs. lorns then returned to Queen Anne to resume teaching in the Spanish and French departments until her withdrawal last year. ri CARULY N BARCLAY BoRN IN 0w..x'roNNA, lVIINNESO'l'A, Miss Carolyn Barclay came to Queen Anne high school from Pen- dleton high school in Oregon, where she taught journalism and English. Through her intense work, supervision, and interest, the Kuay became one of Seattle's finest high school newspapers. In addition to her tireless work on the Kuay, Miss Barclay found time to compile a Queen Anne service list of ex-students, actively engaged in the war. These lists, highly praised for their accuracy and completeness, served as a brilliant climax to Miss Barelay's inspiring work with the Kuay, which was terminated by her death on October 9, 1945. Our estate to be clividerl as follows: A 1. To all incoming freshmen we endow a map leading directly to the girls' Gym and a large batch of unsold tickets to the roof garden. 2. To the faculty we leave a finger printing set, a magnifying glass, and two blood hounds with which to track down would-be cutters-ealso our undying gratitude for a job well done. 3. To ,lohn Cherberg we leave a City Championship in football and the knowledge that to those that played under him there'll never be a better coach than the Cowboy. I ml i vidually Pat Lyons leaves the four years of hard work that made her valedictorian in '46. . . . Craig McLennan, Clyde Glassman, ,lim Pederson, Phil Miller, the honor of All City positions in football .... Hap Myers, a perpetual grin and an amazing capacity for work- Let Hap do iti' was almost a motto .... Ginny Hay, Ellie Heflin, Nancy Owen and Sis Weaver, a hole on the A. Stage where their flashing feet entertained us many a time .... Betty Chester, a pair of strained vocal cords .... Cal Smith, Don Anderson, Dave Beaudin, 10,783 hot notes .... Dave Lamphere and Dick Stenshoel the gavel of Senior Class President .... Sonia Childs, one padded cell resulting from trying to turn out the annual you are now reading .... Dick Koefod and Tom Normoyle, the memory of many an exciting moment on the maples ...., lulie Apostolou and Chuck Boyle, two cans of ski wax and a beautiful tan .... Bonnie Lou Christensen, one hula skirt which doesn't leave her too much, does it? . . . Shirley Abbot and Bill Cheney, the 1946 Kapers .... Dick Clark, 4 bushels of corn straight from tl1e cob .... Charlie Lewis, the reams of piano music that ,lose'7 has played on the battered Steinway.i' Finally To all those students who shall ever enter tl1e Big Door on Galer Street, tl1e men and women of '46 wish to leave behind the wonderful memory of their high school life. As we look back many things come to mind feOur first day at Queen Anne when with hesitant step and trembling heart we Hrst beheld these now familiar halls .... After- noons at the lnn with the sun streaming in the windows and George smiling across the counter .... The long trek down to Civic Field .... Gab Sessions in the locker room. . . . The bench by George F's office .... Mixers in the lunchroom .... Twenty week tests . . . and that intangible something that made everything a glorious game and imbued us all with an incurable optimism towards things to come. However high we may rise or to whatever depths we may sink in that unhappy world to which we are soon to pass there is not one of us but who will look back with great pleasure and not a little longing at the four gloriously hectic years spent at the big grey school on the top of the llill. Nancy Owen Mary Piper Pat Lyons Tut-1 Guns' CLUB this year made a special attempt to promote the objects of the Girls, Club which include the fostering of friendships among the girls, giving those interested a chance to work with and for others, and improving standards in the school. The Big Sister and New Cirlsi Committees offered a special welcome to girls new to Queen Anne by assisting them in their first, week at school and by entertaining them at parties. Girls, both old and new, met at the many parties throughout, the year. Various committees worked both semesters to improve the standards of the school. Standards, middy. courtesy, and health drives were carried out with posters, tags. and parties. Through Cabinet many girls were given leadership experience. The more tangible side of Girls' Club work was seen in interesting bulletin boards, pright pompoms, much needed Red Cross and foreign relief work, birthday cards, and the semi-monthly Cubs. For the success of these and many other activities we are indebted to our Girls, Adviser, Nfiss Chisholm, and our faculty sponsors, bliss Floyd, lliss llarsch, Nliss Hicks, bliss liretsinger, Miss Sears and Nliss Thomas. Choir ICVIQR SINCE ITS ORGANIZATION at Queen Anne, The Choir, under the leadership and direction of Miss Helen Kretsinger, has figured very prominently in Queen Anne's music activities. Miss Kretsinger, as director, has proven to be an inspiration and an impetusnin guiding the choir which has become one of the best among the Seattle high schools. A This year the enrollment, with ninety-one members, has been the largest ever witnessed here. The Choir has found time not only to perform in the Operetta, Kapers, Assemblies, and Christmas program, but has also to sing at several other of Seattle's public schools. Those students enrolled in Choir have not only had thc fun of participating and singing in Queen Anne's musical productions and activities but have gained invaluable musical training and instruction for themselves. The Choir has not only furnished the student body with innumerable hours of enjoyment but has profited in experience for itself. Queen Anne wishes to sincerely thank the Choir, and especially Miss Kretsinger, for the splendid achievements and contribution they have made toward enriching Queen Annc's musical scene. 83 Advisor, Miss Uhden is 61 oste Q za '. fi 'f if ,: K, ,ii .,,n . 9 A 11.-,fi 1 . !ufEf ,Lg 5 Somebody wont some gas? :Wav 'mfw ,,P, 7 Q9 615V .14 D A D Aren'if they lovely?
