I. - ,7,,,, , 4 Sin 1945 HIS IS IT. . . the result of 1460 hours crammed vvith svveat and svvearing, deadlines and discourage- mentg hours when nerves became quivering harp strings, when nocturnal silence Was shattered by a gremlin army threatening to throw a monkey vvrench into the Yearbook engine of pictures and pulp .... These are only pages and portraits-but they are a graphic, moving history of Queen Anne and the people who make those grey bricks pulsate With the flaming vigor of youth-You.. . . Ten years from novv if these pages bring but a glimmer of of nostalgia for that high school on the hilltop, our goal will have been reached. HIS is not a dedication-it is the portrait of a MAN. Glowing adjectives and fiery phrases alike fall miserably short of their purpose in picturing this person, one whose entire life has been forged from childhood in the raging furnace of true manhood. His span of years has been as steeleand this has been his code. The steel must be cast with care, and yet not gently, ere the finished ingot be tough and true. The molding and shaping are done with the hammer and anvil of worldly knowledge. The bitter blows of life, its tears and its disil- lusionment can be weathered without scar, if the molten metal of the man be of unswerving determination. And man's mind too must be temperedenot with undue haste, nor with faltering step. lf time is lost, the youth must harden and be cast before life's centuries of knowledge can be poured into his mind's yawning mold. Albert Francis Bassford was born in Birmingham, England, not far from the sweat and swelter of that city's blast furnaces. ls it not possible that his life has been fashioned after the pattern of steel-tough and true as the best Birmingham could offer? lf such a comparison be made it will be found deficient in one respect. Steel has not the power to shape other bits of unfinished ore. Once cast it has not further use but to serve its solitary purpose. Here the life of Albert Bassford surpasses the cold steel. His has been the job of casting the undeveloped minds of twenty-seven years of Queen Anne students. This is where nerveless metal falls short. Under his hand, the steel of a quarter century's eight thousand Queen Anne students has been tempered and taken the blows of life's anvil. lf the course of their life has carried true as unswerving steel, they may offer silent thanks to the one, who, from the raw iron, forged that steel. Steel has found a superior, Albert Frances Bassford-the teacher, the friend, the MAN. fbedzcaizw B A S S F O 1 NZ . .lt Z. L U T H E R r i ll C ONE OF THE pleasant experiences of the war is to meet the many service men that come back to visit The Old School during their brief furloughs. A few of these men will never be the same, but most of them are bronzed by the rigors of military training and combat, trim, erect figures looking fine and fit for any emergency. Could you read the thought in their minds as they return to the old school you would find it in complete agreement with this unusual book of pictures as it undertakes to mirror the joyousness of school daysegolden student days for them gone by. From another group of service men we receive many letters. These men are trying through the Armed Institute to make up courses they need to graduate. In some instances, it is no fault of their own that they did not graduate, but plenty of the letters stress the fact that school was an opportunity they did not make too much of. But now they know what it is all about. The letters of these men do not deny the joyousness of halcyon high school days, but they also stress there is a job to be done. Sincerely, O, L. LUTHER. M R F A R M E R V i c e IT HAS BEEN SAID that no privilege exists that is not inseparably bound to a duty. What are the duties tied to the privilege of high school attendance? The very instance of your high school membership increases your neighbor's expectance of a finer Wa of life from ou. You cannot esca e the additional duties to ourself and to enerations Y Y P Y S past and present who have sacrificed to make the American high school what it is. Ultimately you will join Queen Anne graduates who have blazed an unusually fine trail of achieve- ment and leadership. Their records suggest the prediction that the large majority of you will not be found Wanting in repaying the unequalled opportunities of free American public education. Sincerely, GEORGE S, FARMER. A. 2. To all incoming Freshmen we leave the clammy drenching of the main hall fountain and elevator tickets, administered by smiling Seniors. 3. To the generations of Senior boys who have yet to run Cor crawlD through the Commando Course, the men of '45 leave 317 cuts, bruises, burns, and shiners. Perronnllfy . . . We of 1945 wish to leave behind, with a tinge of teen-age nostalgia, the spirit of an era that will haunt the hallowed halls of Hilltop High for many a year . . . the Spirit of the Grizzly. It means standing up for the kickoff, hollering until your throat feels like a piece of torn sand- paper . , . and then hollering some more. It means trudging wearily back up the hill, tired, jubilant over victory, dejected, but anxiously awaiting the next contest with a Try to keep me down look in defeat. It means music and laughter and mixers, crowds and plays and clapping, assemblies and algebra and annuals, work and fight and win. . . . A maze of chemistry, fun and cokes, with the spirit that made the oldesters gasp --we lived in that world, we loved it and now we leave it to you. Don't let us down, don't let the Grizzly Spirit down. THE CLASS or N1N1:TnuN HUNDRED FORTY-FIVE. To begin our first year we were ably represented by Doug Wilson as President, assisted by Jane Laney. Secretarial duties were handled by Barbara Brace while joan Colman took care of the bankbook. Suzie Rovvles informed the public of our progress as our Kuay Representative. Their term was ended when the successful mixer, Frosh Frolic, was given. With many nominees to choose from, we elected Barbara Arnold, Virginia Taylor, Sue Horne, Marilyn Morgan and John Schaak as President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer and Kuay Repre- sentative respectively, to lead us the next semester. We were vvell represented in the field of sports with Gene Grant, Bob Lajala, Lefty Smith and Dick Smith, the most outstanding among the males. In the girls' field, Charlotte Small carries the title of Junior Girls' Tennis Champion of Seattle. Junior Miss would not have been complete Without the assistant manager, Helen Sims. In the Kuay Karnival Kapers there were many who were photogenic. We remember especially the songs by Dotties Mace and Willis Konick, the Russian dance by Jo Anne Kirberger, and John Schaak on the marimba. Among the leads in the operetta, the Gondoliers, Dottie Mace and Oliver Chappell, made successful debuts. With the end of our Freshman year coming to a close, we wish to thank our Advisor, Miss Uhden, and our Counselor, Mr. Uhl, for their much needed assistance throughout the year. In addition to the fall Girls' Club assembly and the nominating assembly in April, an All Girls' Meeting was held on February 8. lt was attended by nearly 200 girls. The spring assembly was the lirst portion of the program for our Girls' Club Day, which ended with a party for all girls. Carrying out a Gay Nineties theme, and having scoured the town for pipe cleaners, in May we at last made our Mother-Daughter Banquet a reality. For its success, as well as that of each Girls' Club activity, we thank Miss Chisholm for her patient guidance and practical ideas. f-f' ANN LOMIEN. When she started dunking her head in the hypo and waiting for the film on her teeth to develop, Mr. Hoverson decided the whole staff needed a rest. By September the staff had been completed and the actual work begun. Drawing layouts, snapping photos, pasting pictures, till the long wintry evenings began to give way to the first balmy breaths of spring. QWe hadn't seen daylight for six months, so the only way we knew 'twas spring was that Mr. l-loverson was getting bulb happy againj For the Iirst time in the history of the annual, all class pictures were taken before Christmas, insuring the book's delivery date. Thus, another Grizzly has rolled off the press, and for the first time in nine months, Mr. Hoverson leads his thirteen little groundhogs into the daylight once again. rqnnualrq ' FIST ROW: Dolores Decker, Mary Piper, Shirley Campbell, Nancy Rowles, Pal Moriarty, Darlene Wall. Two passes, a la Jess Douglas, and a Dave Lamphere 13-yard romp were the paydirt plays for the Maroon scores. Signal-caller, Dave McGirr, turned in the day's best show of plain and fancy blocking. A 17-yard Pemberton, Douglas, pass, a 66-yard drive culminated by Joe Zorich's first plunge, and a razzle- dazzle-end-around toss from Bob Bland to Douglas plus a conversion added up to 19 points. But the Pine streeters had Won. MAHAM SEASON ENDS AS KUAYS DROP 14-O FRACAS Hopes for a 50-50 season were packed away in moth- balls with the Maroon jerseys last Saturday when the Kuays bowed to a heavy Ballard eleven 14-0. This ended a season which saw a Grizzly eleven the dopsters didn't give a chance, send many a shiver up the back of the league leaders. Why? Because a maroon clad cleated club thrives on the title under-dog. JOE ZORICH COACH CHERBERG Swami! 7ea.m Qaeda!! The season in review: After dropping the opener to Roosevelt 13-O, the Cubs hit their stride, knocking off West Seattle 7-6 with Wingman Lee Amundson snagging the paydirt pass, and then booting the winning conversion. Kuoys l9, Eagles 6 Two backs and that same Amundson spelled defeat for Clevelands Eaglets, with Fullback Phil Miller and Halfhack Bill Briggs, sprinted and passed 'em dizzy. Three Shutours It was Craig McLennan who dropped the touchdown aerial into Amundsons mitts for the Seconds' long tally in the Pup fray. Final score: 6-O. Again 'twas the Rambling Scott pacing the Maroon men to a muddy 7-0 triumph over a touted Lincoln eleven, and winding up the regular schedule a week later at the Howe Muditorium with another 7-O victory, this one at the expense ofthe Broadway Tigers. Kuays Whirewosh Lincoln 40-O in Championship Playoff November 20, 1944, dawned clear and cold on Civic Field. It was such a pleasant day for a massacre. McLennan set up the first Grizzly score early in the opening stanza, scampering 55 yards, then passing to running-mate Lowell Knutson. A Knutson-Phil Miller pitch plus the big fullhaclis con- version plunge made it 13-O at the half. The second half turned into a track meet with Miller, Lee Amundson, Knutson, and McLennan coming in for their share in scoring honors. It was Bruin pivot man jack Meister who snared a Lincoln pass and chugged 75 yards to the promised land and the longest sprint of the day. BACK: Erwin Henkel, coach. IN A SEASON marked by last minute rallies and wide-open play, Queen Anne's third string, under the able tutelage of Coach Erwin Henkel, hung up with their tattered moleskins a two wins, two tie, and two loss record. Henkel, back in the coaching wars for the first time in six years, could easily have wound up on top of the Frosh-Soph. circuit with but a few of the breaks in the right spots. After dropping the initial scrap to Roosevelt 13-O, the Cubs played to a pair of scareless deadlocks against West Seattle and Cleveland. In the latter, a Kuay touchdown that could have spelled victory was recalled. Trouncing Garfield's scrub eleven 13-6, the Hilltoppers lost another heartbreaker to Broadway. The Tigers scored in the last 35 seconds to forge ahead and win 13-7. Sparked by the Carl Ramberg-Pat Maloney passing combo.-the the Maroon gridders ended the year with a singing 7-O triumph over Lincoln.
