Do you hear the far-off sound of bugles playing Taps In some far distant post? Lights out4- And far across the seas There are a thousand more lights out. Boys who have given their lives So that we can be free, and live in a land that is free. They want to come back and find America As they left her! They love you, America! They love your rolling hills and your low flat Valleys and prairies, V Your clear blue lakes in the mountains Your broad clean skies and your hills And your forests and cities and markets, Your canyons and rivers and people. They love you for what you are And for what you stand for. They love you for you- America ! They want the right To speak and act as they wish- Without fear. They want to pick up the threads Of their lives As they left them- When they were boys. And we remember them well- Hurrying to class, and cramming for tests. Puzzling over an algebra problem Or Latin stems. Winning the game by a touchdown, And acting up on the stage. Dancing at mixers and drinking cokes, And finallyggraduationl With their black caps and gowns and diplomas- They were so proud! And then-the Prom- We keep remembering them As they were then. The light of their lives May have wavered- And died But their dreams And their hopes And their loves Will live forever- In the hearts of the free! -Dom MILLER. 'fw sl ...- Our theme: THE HILLBILLY lt is tempting in these troubled times to choose the theme of Schools at War and it is easy to use those pictures that remind us of the world's present chaos. Rather we would like to depict the present affliction in a lighter sense. Everyone has had a chance to experience a few of the inconveniences of war. Rationing of gasoline fand shoesj, lack of manpower, shortages of films, fiashbulbs, rubber cement, and paper all contribute to the trials of an annual staff. By exaggerating these inconveniences and adding a note of levity we felt reduced to the simple life of those interesting mountain people, the Hillbillies. If we have for a moment given a bit of relaxation in this time of strife and worry, our annual will be worth the time and effort put forth. THE STAFF. This is good as far as it goes, but it can go much farther if each student dedicates himself. Could these Gold Star Boys speak to us again, how much they could tell us! Perhaps they would urge you to carry on, to seek and keep robust health and stamina. With these you can fight your way thru this war and the days of uncertainty to follow. They would have you make the most of your school oppor- tunity. This war ofmechanized move- ment is a smart man's war, and the world beyond the war will be a smart man's world. Physical stamina and intelligence will count. These boys, too, would be human enough to want you to have the joyousness that belongs to youth, as much of it as war permits. No later restitution can compensate youth denied this joyousness. And so with vigor, trained minds, and joy in our American way of life they would urge you to carry on and serveefneyes, even unto death if need be. O. L. LUTHER, Principal. Only when years are sped do we realize how carefree and quickly spent are high school days. Already, these pages remind us with a pang of many who have gone to face the duties and risks of war-some not to return. Only when years are sped do we realize the full comforts of faith, and deeds, and memories. GEORGE S. FARMER, Vice-Principal. l13l DAVIS MAIQGUERHE DE LANEY MAUDE DRAKE A, F. They have been a constant source of 1nsp1rat1on to us and we hate to see them go. But we will remember them for their patience and sincere interest as well as the extra time which they gave so generously Miss Winn came here in 1938 from West Seattle where she was class counselor, teacher's welfare head, and helped with the school paper. Here at Queen Anne she taught English. After her retire- ment Miss Winn expects to go into some kind of work where she can help returning soldiers End themselves again. Mr. Campbell taught us skillfully for eighteen years, and gave us a part of his wholesome person- ality and philosophy. He taught biology and pre-flight. Through his work as class advisor, for many years, he became a sincere friend of the students. The Rod 'n' Reel Club, of which he was advisor, felt his influence and he succeeded in interesting many students in the sport which he loved. Due to eye trouble he has left Queen Anne. He is now pursuing one of his favorite hobbies, farming. We wish him luck in his new endeavor. 181 Zn imlzmnriam l areu'ell, dear voyuger -'twill not be long, Your work is done -now peace rest with tlzeeg Your kindly thoughts and cleerls ftlzev will lille on, This is not lll'Ulll ,tis immortality.-f .-Inon. With the passing of Raoul Brink., Queen Anne has lost a great man and a true friend. For a quarter of a century his genial personality and elfective methods of teaching have made his foreign language courses exceedingly popular. llis friendliness. his sense of humor, and his genuine interest in others endeared him to the hearts of all who knew him. llis Sunny outlook on life, his cheerful Smile, and his clever little jokes lent an informal and congenial air to his classes. Although he has left us, we will never forget the kindness and sincerity of this man, whose memory will never fade from our hearts. When we entered as freshmen, We looked forward to the day when we could say we were seniors. Now that that day is here, no doubt many of us wish that we were underclassmeli again. During three of our four years, the war has limited our activities, but in spite of the War the senior class of 1944 has made an admirable record for itself. Many of our classmates have gone into the service, some never to come back. We are proud of them, we will remember them, and we will do our level best to see that the young men and women of the class of 1964 will never graduate into a world at war, but into a World of peace. We will do our utmost to make that peace last for all time.-TAD MANNING. Iunior Class History The class of '45 showed their abilities as upperclassmen this year. Despite the war and its demands, the ,luniors participated in all the school activities. Class history was really made this fall when we elected our officers. For the first time we had a group of girls at the helm. Dot Smith was elected preside11t, Alice ,lean Higgins vice-president, Barbara Sawyer secretary, Maralyn Burnley treasurer, and Elaine Campbell Kuay representative. The spring election results showed Jane Brace taking over the duties of president, ably assisted by Jim Bahferty. The secretarial books were turned over to Dave lVIcGirr. Again our finances were taken care of by Maralyn Burnley. Jess Douglas was Kuay representative. The ,lunior participants in the athletic field were unusually good. Among the out- standing were Bill Briggs, Bob Bland, ,less Douglas, ,lack Peterson and ,loe Zorich. Many of our class members brightened the aspects of a good play when they dis- played their talents. Those young talented players in the school play Out of the Frying Pan were Don Usher, lVlary Lawrence, Pat Murray, Edithe Boiko, Art Lezin, Cliuek Gerold. and Mary Elaine Anderson. i44l Rationed Revue was the name given the Kapers this year. Chuck Gerold, Dick Rosen and Shirley Tomlinson as Junior Directors contributed much to its success. Others were: Thora Canlett, Maralyn Burnley, Delores Rasmussen, Ruth Webb, Alice Jean Robson, Carol Sylliaasen, Eleanor Potterud, Carol Hansen, Jack Smith, Kay Edwards and Marcia Morris. The Girls, Club officers elected for next year arc Ann Lomen, president, ,lane Brace, vice-president, Ellen Stiles, secretary and Kay Edwards, treasurer. The class of 1945 feels that it owes a debt of gratitude to Mr. Baker who has so ably guided us as class adviser.-JANE BRACE. JU IDR CL DAVE McGIRR, Secretary, JESS DOUGLASS, Kuuy Representative, MARALYN BURNLEY, Treasurer, JIM RAFFERTY, Vice-President, JANE BRACE, President. 1: Q! e M GIL ANDERSON, Treasurer, DON WALL, Vice-President, CATHY BOILEAU, Secretary, DON DENNY, Kuay Representative, HUGH HOLDT, President. ophomore Class History Another year has rolled hy and we have become sophomores. As we look hack. we remember that in the fall of the year we elected these oflicers: llugh lloldt, President: Don Wall, Vice-President, Cathy lloileau, Secretary, Gil Anderson, Treasurer, and Don Denny, Kuay Representative. These officers had a very success- ful term, holding a mixer called the Sophomore Swing and entering the Sophomore class into many school activities. We were well represented in the field of sports by Dave Lanphere, Johnny Parsons, Craig McLennan, Rufus Orr, Frank Hrockman, Phil Miller, .lulie Apos- tolou, Ed Brown, .lim Peterson. .lack Clawson, Bill Tobin, Dick lloefard and many others. Then midst the signing up for new classes and return- ing of report cards, we elected our second semester omcers: Gil Anderson was President this time, Don Wall, Vice-President again: llugh lloldt, Secretary: Sally Davis, Treasurer, and not one but two liuay Representatives-Bob liurth and Virginia llay. Again we held a mixer, this one called the Spring Spree. There was entertainment, refreshments and dancing for all. Everyone met new acquaintances and renewed and strengthened old ones. Then came Kapers. There were so many sophomores in the Rationed Revue that space does not permit us to mention them all. But as we look hack we remember Shirley Ahbottis singing: Cal Smith, playing the piano, Dave Beaudin on the clarinet: and Virginia llay and Gerrie Callow in the horse and many, many others. And now' we end this year with the signing of annuals, talk of summer vacation and final report cards. We could never have had such a successful year without the help and guidance of our adviser, Nl r. Yan Tilhorg, and our counselor, Nlrs. Iorns. So in closing wc. the class of ,46 say-eeusee ya next year . fGINNIl-I HAY. Freshman Class History Our year was started off by an election of ofhcers. These able representatives were President Mel Johnson, Vice-President Carrol Miller, Secretary Mary Lou Williamson and Treasurer Russel Elledge and Kuay Representative George Walker. These people did a splendid job during their semester as officers. The presiding oflieers during the second semester were an equally elfieient groupg President and Vice-Presidentfpositions were taken over by Virginia Fraser and Greg Martin, Secretary Bruce Wolge- muth, Treasurer Doug Sunde, and Kuay Representatives Pat Sykes and Don Kiser. They willingly gave their services to better the success of the Frosh Class. We were well represented in the Kapcrs by such people as Barbara Leicht, Dot Morgan, Mary Bathum and Pat Sykes. Most Freshman boys turned out for some sport, Lowell Knutson being one of our outstanding athletes. We would like to extend our gratitude to Mr. Miller who ably assisted us with our problems through- out the year and also to all the other members of the faculty who helped us. We hope the Freshman classes to follow will enjoy their first ycar as much as we did.-.l ERRY MARTIN, DON KISER, GREG MAARTIN. Early in tho year the work of the Girls' Club was started with the Girls' Club Assembly. Following this, plans for the year were made and committees were selected. In tune with the time the Social Service Committee. under the direction of Miss Ilelen llieks, carried out a very extensive war service program. A Iiond drive. headed by the Girls' Club. soared high in sales above the goal marked on the thermometer. The Vocational Conference this year was a success in every respect. lt was followed by a clever nominating Nsseinbly at which the nominees for Girls' Club omces were presented. At the beginning of the- year it was very doubtful whether a Mother-Daughter banquet would be lu-ld. I.ater. though. the details were finally worked out for a clever theme of Mother Goose. Meeting the increased demand for more recreation in this war period, the Boys' Club has opened its room before school and during all lunches for all boys who wish to play ping-pong or study. This has helped to keep students from creating any disturbances in the halls during lunches. The Boys' Club whenever possible, has coordinated school drives and worked toward better school spirit. One of the most successful drives was the Anti-llalloweien Damage campaign. Two Boys' Club assemblies were presented with sparkling entertainment. The first game against Franklin ende very lopsidedly with the southendel getting a big zero while we rolled u thirty-four points. This started the season off with hang, and everything was going fine uni Broadway entered the picture and upse the apple-cart to the tune of 13-0. ln the third contest A. crossed tl first row: J. Next, just after we had turned the apple cart over and were on our way, Ballard came along and upset it again, 14-7. This was pretty disheartening but the fellows wouldn't say die and after a contest with Lincoln which ended 0-0, the Grizzlies decided that they would get into the win column and got top scores in their last three games. West Seattle bowed 7-6, Garfield came at little easier 20-0, and then Roosevelt 7-0.7D.AY'IIJ LEE, VERNON SHANSBY. Firsf row: S. Mallory, D. McGirr, K. Usher, F. Brown, J. Abercrombie, J. Gilbert, J. Bill Pemberton figured in the first touchdown when getting a reverse from Dave Lanphere he went forty yards for one of the tallies. ln the game with Ballard the Shingleweavers suffered a crushing defeat 20-0. This was done in at least three inches of mud and considering the fact that Ballard left their mud suits and web feet home it's not too hard to see. lt's always well to be prepared related the Grizzlies. The team was also sharp during the Roosevelt game when they left the Held with a l4-0 victory tucked in with their pennant. ,less Douglas. in this game, after the team had made a seventy yard drive put thc ball in the end zone. This and another touchdown with a conversion gave the Kuays another foothold on the championship. ln their last game the fellows split with Garfield each side getting one goal and no conversion for six points apiece. For the second year in a row the Quccn Anne Seconds were in top position. 'DAVID LEE, VERNON SHANSBY. L .. LW. . 4 1 . Third Team Football Tl1e Kuay thirds for the second consecutive year have won the undisputed lead in their division. They didn't lose a game and won most of them by a substantial margin. For example: They defeated Ballard our oldest and bitterest rival 19-0. Orr, an end and Miller, a back Hgured in these scores. The thirds also gave O'Dea a trimming 7-6. The first score was made by 0,Dea in the second quarter when the superior O,Dea line pushed to the A. 25 and then went over in two plays. Late in the second quarter our side decided to get rough and in doing so put the ball beyond the last white line and the score was tied. As a finishing touch Lowel Knutson ran around end for tl1e seventh point. The thirds also gave Lincoln a good shellacking 26-6. The scoring started in the first quarter when Knutson ran forty yards to pay dirt. High scoring honors got to Miller who made two touchdowns and a try for point. The last one being made on an intercepted pass. The thirds also sent Broadway down in defeat 7-0. Likewise 'Roosevelt was trounced 12-0. Pulley 'llhe l9-1--I Basketball season for Queen .Mine was a success considering the number of returning let- terlnen. Scooter Glassman, Kenny Williams. and Ron Nlcliinstry comprised the list of the experienced hasketeers but Coach llerb Davis found excellent first-string material in former second and third team bovs. The finds of the season were Chuck llurkland and ,less Douglas who played respectively at guard and center. The first game of the schedule was with Cleveland who took us for at a very close one 23-22 but the next game, with Ballard. corrected this loss with the Kuayites taking the contest l9-8. Nnother ancient and powerful rival. llroadway, with a large group of returning lettermen upset the QA. quintet to the lllllt' of 36-33 which really did no real good for a first class team such as Broadway had. Franklin's star team was next on the list but Queen Anne didn't have any luck on their side to help them past the danger point with second highest team of the season and were submitted to a 44 -25 defeat. Queen Anne took both Garfield and the West Seattle lndians in two successive games ft-0-26 and 40-37. Ballard was the next team to fall to the now sharp-edged Grizzly hatchet and this win over the old rival quieted the blow of a loss to Broadway 33-25. The seasons last game with Franklin brought the stands down in howls of protest as the Kuay five trounced the south-end sehool in a close contest in the Green Wavt s own gym. 'l'he last games of the season were purely insignificant but aided the Grizzlies record with wins over Garfield 37-32 and over West Seattle 20-18. At the end of the schedule with only the finals to go and a sure chance for third plaee the four remain- ing members of the team were forced to put aside the chance for the lack of enough members to even begin a game. lfowever they were willing to play' if permitted to do so. To these boys. symbolic of American youth. we give our appreeiations for upholding the standards of Queen Anne high school in the interest of free and clean sportsmanship. Vsiwow Siiwsiw, Davin Lmc. Foley, to eeond Team Basketball Although the second team experienced many upsets during their twelve game schedule the team always had unity and the desire and will to set a good record for the old Alma Mater even 'though they could not produce the quality of playing by other experienced second teams. The seconds dropped eight games during the short season but the important point is that these games were not overwhelming victories by the winning opponents. The scores of these stand: Cleveland: 19-17: Ballard: 19-16 and 23-20: Broadway: 40-22: Franklin 24-18 and 38-18: Garfield: 26-24: West Seattle: 37-20. The four games of the schedule won by the Queen Anne second team were against Broadway, Cleveland, Garfield, and West Seattle. Although the season was no great success as far as the prep standings are concerned the boys who gained experience on the team will provide a good start and background for the Queen Anne basket- ball team of 1945. Ten wins and two loses made a great contribu- tion to their record and the boys surprised their rivals by showing true form and sportsmanship often as seen usually in only the first-string games. Honest practice and teamwork with no grous- ing was their secret of success in laying aside ferocious opponents. The ambition of these boys was to show their school that they could play good and exciting games. They succeeded in doing so. As the season wore on the attendance at Frosh games was greatly increased. Coach Henkel helped the boys out with tips on various sports thereby preparing them with experience to be used later, possibly even on one of the school teams. Accuracy of this statement is seen in the fact that upper-classmen take part in teams, etc., while younger boys are seen playing after school behind the gym' Such sports as football, baseball, soccer, handball, basketball, volley- ball, and apparatus work can be enjoyed by everyone in the gym and outside after school. Even the eighth graders are taking part in these sports. Intramural helps develop the boy in mind and body and has done much to better the feeling of good sportsmanship in Queen Anne since its founding. Coach Henkel is to be warranted for his extra interest in the boys this school year and his fine courses of physical development gyms such as wrestling, tumbling, apparatus, and commando training. af VERNoN SHANSBY, DAVID LEE.
