As our train gathered momentum we found time between the duties of home work and busy weekvends to choose as our head fireman, Ruth Jepson, aided by her efficient crew, Francis Agnetti, Nancy Bushnell, jim Art, and Don Wylie. Our second semester was spent admiring numerous scenic spots in Mexico. Our head guide, Bill Higgins was assisted by his rangers, Don Wylie, Roy jefferies, Don Foster, and Mitzi Baumgarten. Visiting Central America captured our interests during the second lap of our joumey. We stopped to change trains and boarded the Sophomore Zephyr. Our head hreman and his crew gladly tumed over their duties of keeping the interest burning to a new and willing group, Nancy Bushnell, Don Wylie, Dee Simmons, Mitzi Baumgarten, and jolly Cook. The talented students of our class appeared in main-line productions while our athletes provided the upper classmen with strong competition in all sports. Prompted by the native festivities, we originated the Sophomore Mixer. When some one mentioned that we might enjoy a short side-trip to survey the historic Panama Canal, Dirk Sprinkle, Bill Higgins, Ken McLennon, Lois Ager, and Marjorie Milsted chartered a boat and led us safely there. This was not for long, however, for Mr. Baker, anxious that we move on, hurried us back to the station. Once more we made a change, this time for a more rugged train, the junior jirney. Jack Lohuis, Ray McGowan, Ray Hiltabidel, Stuart Rogers, and jolly Cook took over the controls, and then-South America, with its music, art, and colorful customs. Here Jim Art, Ray Hiltabidel, Fred Millet, Jolly Cook, and Don Foreman provided hard competi- tion for native politicians, while Norm Reynolds, Iris Fribrock, and Lois Gilchrist entertained amazed Spaniards with their musical ability. We could hardly believe that we had spent three years so quickly. Days of tests, assemblies, rushing for classes and all the other things that one does when he is with his friends, were almost over, yet our tour still held a round of activities for us. We chose a senior pin, produced a Senior Play, and congratulated Thespians of our own group on a first class performance. We were exceptionally fortunate in having a number of Ftne athletes on board. Dick Sprinkle, Dick Ackenhausen, Ray Hiltabidel, Bill Houghton, Elmer Ramberg, Fred Miller, Valdimar Hansen, Louis Taigen, and Ken Davis, members of the football squad, proudly added a star on their letter sweaters, signifying a victorious football season. Jack Loliuis, Stewart Oberg, Tom Lough, Norm Smith, Bob Due and Nick Avgeres well represented the remaining sports. Time passed quickly, we changed trains, and soon we chose for the last time our leaders, our crew. Fred Miller, Don Wylie, Ray Hiltabidel, Mickey Maloney, and Elinor Geisman were elected ro guide The Senior Streak over the last lap of its ioumey. The reality of the war was brought very near to us when many of our classmates joined the armed forces. In view of their sacrifice, we paused long enough to promote a successful war-bond drive. Finally Los Diplomas, along with the Senior Picnic, Senior day and graduation announcements were in sight, and the concluding month of our joumey found us in a dilemma of gradepoint averages and final tests. Commencement will mark the close of a very important chapter of our lives, but it also means the beginning of a new and interesting adult life. Our success is no longer up to our engineersg it is ours to do with as we may. -DON FOSTER -MARION HANSON COMMENCEMENT SPEAKERS-Don Foreman, LEADING HONOR STUDENTS-Mary Joun Mnrquardi. To represent them the first semester the juniors elected Tad Manning president, Geri Marty vice-president, Shirley Danner secretary, Marcheta Setzer treasurer, and Jean More- men Kuay representative. Many Juniors were prominent in varsity and second team football. Among them were Chuck Burkland, Eugene Coe, Joe Pritchard and Ken Brown. The senior play cast included many Juniors. Among them were Jean Martiii, Betty Holloman, Alice Jean Robson, Par Jephcott, Pat Townsend, and Joe Blixr. Leading the class during the spring semester were Chuck Burlcland president, Jerry Butler vice-president, Lui Hall secretary, Paul Whaley treasurer, and Bev Johnson Kuay representative. - The juniors were very prominent in Shellzapoppiif, the Kapers. Betty I-Iolloman and Jan Dowarcl were chosen Senior directors for next year's show. Betty and Jan, as well as Patsy Barrett showed great ability as act directors. Everybody enjoyed Geri lVlarty's and joan Chappell's singing. The basketball season proved to the school that the Junior class has an abundance of fine uhoopy' prospects. Prominent on the gym floor of Kuay were Ken Williams, Chuck Burlcland, joe Pritchard, and Jerry Butler. In spring a young manls fancy also turns to spring sports. This was proved by Reuben Hilton, Jack Opperman, Bud Sanclvigen, Stuart Rogers, Jimmie Jewell, Don Magowan, joe Proffitt, and Bill Marsten. Barbara Shelton and Jean Carr distinguished themselves in girls' sports, Barbara also being editor of Girls, Sports in the Kuay and Annual. The class appreciates the time, efforts, and good will given them by their adviser, Mr. Shelton, and their Counsellor, Mr. Uhl. -TAD MANNING LUI HALL PAUL WHALEY BEV JOHNSON JERRY BU'l'lER CHUCK BURKLAND Secreiury Treasurer Kuay Reprasaniniive Vlre-President President Q l ? i dl lag 5 w-,Q l 'ix ' i f V i 4 A I 1 5 ,l w 5' . September found all of us at the polls to select the first semester oiiicers. After the fog lifted we discovered that we had elected two girls and four boys. Bob Smith took over the job of President. As his able assistant we found Roy Short. The minutes of the semester were aptly recorded by Jess Douglas, while the financial status of the class was upheld by Jim Rafferty. For the third semester we were widely publicized, for we had two charming Kuay Representatives, Dot Smith and Alice jean Higgins. Among other activities, we produced a highly successful mixer under the direc- tion of our helpful adviser, Mr. Kenneth Campbell. As the months passed, we found upright athletic males making a name for themselves on the football field. These rugged fellows tumed out to be jess Douglas, Bill Bennett, Bill Sholdt, Dick Rosen and John Gilbert. On the hardwood Hoor we again found jess Douglas while jim Tupper handled a managing job effectively. Drama and the sparkle of the footlights found its subject in The Eyes of Tlalocf' Here again we found promising young Sophomores in the persons of Don Usher and Pete Williams. So the firstnsemester curtain closed on a successful start. Amidst the confusion of finding new classes and spring fever it was revealed that the time had come for a new election of oflicers. This time a girl, Elaine Camp- bell, held the office of president. jess Douglas took over the office of vice-president and John Gilbert recorded as secretary. Dave Bates became the banker as treasurer, and jim Rafferty had become publicity writer as Kuay Representative. More talent seemed inevitable with such a brilliant class. Shellzapoppin was certainly a revealing show of this talent. Among others, Delores Rasmussen and Marlyn Burnley danced with perfect coordination and rhythm in many of the acts. Carol Sylliassen also showed her artistic ability in the duck dance, while Roy Short, beating out on the drums, really inspired many a music fan. As the curtain came clown on this production we again found more athletic ability with jim Rafferty, Jess Douglas, Bill Bennett, Roy Short, Bill Briggs, Phil Walten and Brice Carlson. These boys showed their skills in tennis, track, and base- ball, respectively. The year drew to a close with thoughts of our successful year as Sophomores, which sends us two years closer to our final destination. This progress would never have been complete without the able advice and assistance of our counselor and adviser, Paul Van Tilborg and Kenneth Campbell. So to them we all express our heartfelt thanks for their guidance toward our success. -ELAINE CAMPBELL 901' IMITH KIIAV IPIIINIAYIVI 1 Y ...t..eF,... ms no Vid-ll! t Q11 1,3 fi- JONN Olllilfr' IICIIIAIY-5 ' - I . -is I li 1.,1.l.-.il H V G3 ' . We have endeavored to carry out the usual program as much as possible but clue to rationing we were not able to have our Fall Girls' Club assembly and we missed having a Girls' Club party. We did, however, have our annual Voca- tional Conference which we felt was this year, more than ever, of educational value. We were able to carry out the Mother-Daughter Banquet in good style with Spring as our theme and chicken pies taking the place of the hard-to-get rationed foods. lVe helped the community and nation with many war drives and campaigns, and urged the students to wall: to school rather than ride the buses. Queen Anne had the honor this year of being a hostess school with Roosevelt. Therefore, we were in charge of the two All-City Girls' Club Conferences and the Presiclentls Tea. YVe feel these conferences were successful and gave inspiration to the girls. -NANCY BUSHNELL NANCY BUSHNELL DOROTHY A. After making a record in the prep grid race by making seven straight wins and then to tie their last tussle with the Franklin Quakers in a O-0 game, the boys were entering the Charity game with nothing to gain and everything to lose, but with the Shingle-VVeavers it was just the reverse. The Turkey Bowl game then ended in a 6-6 tie, and a co-championship was handed to the Beavers. The first game of the season opened when the Grizzlies played the Beavers and nosed them out with a lone score by Bob Richards and the game finished 6-0. Broadway was the next victim. The Kuays had a little trouble with the Bengals passing attack, but finished with a comfortable margin of 25-7. Richards, Elmer Ramberg, Ray Hiltabidel and Chuck Burkland each made a touchdown. The Lincoln Lynx were pretty scrappy, but the Grizzlies were out to break the jynx and did. Ackenhausen to Hiltabidel was the passing attack that made the first touchdown. On the second score Richards finished olf a 69-yard drive, and the game ended 13-0. Victim ntunber 4 was the Cleveland Eagles. The Southsiders were in the cellar, but just the same, there was no over-confidence, The game ended 13-0. The touchdowns were by Richards and Ackenhausen. Richards and his talented foot beat the Roughriders 7-6. Harold Allen made the touchdown on an end around, and everyone in the stands was thinking of taking Cherberg's nerve remedy, before the game was over. Uohnny recommends water., Those Indians from West Seattle took another beating, as the Queen Anne boys drowned them in a 7-0 game in a terrific rain storm. The whole school relaxed, after this game was over. It ended 12-7. In their hnal game, me team found the Quakers one of the most improved teams and the game ended 0-O. This ended the regular season to find the Grizzlies setting a record of seven straight victories and one tie, and the first championship since 1930. Ken Davis won the vote of his teammates as the inspirational award winner. Val Hanson, Dick Ackenhausen and Fred Miller placed on the All-city nrst team, while Davis, Allen and Burkland placed on the second team All-city. This ended what some people may call a successful season, but to the boys on the team and other people whom it concerned, the season ended with much con- troversy over the real champs, and ask any real sportsman, and he'll tell you who the boys are that eamed the crown.
