I UTHER UR PRINCIPAL-for four years he has encour- aged us, always understanding and patient with those of us who find the way hard, forgetting our mis- demeanors and recalling our good deeds, always seeing the best in us. Ever on the alert for opportunities of service to the school, Mr. Luther has untiringly given of his time and ability to Queen Anne l-ligh School. His friendly counsel, keen wit, and brilliant mind will be remem- bered by all of us each time we recall the many rich experiences of our high school days. Although we gn on into new pursuits after our graduation, Mr. Luther will remain here at Queen Anne to guide patiently and sympathetically the students who will come after us. In dedicating this book to him we, the class of l937, desire to show our deep appreciation for his out- standing work. l Mm fl l 433 f '41 - 0 rf SQ W im is f 411 . , i P1 , if ll l 1 3 A l i li l f , l 1' Xl! ylll 43 i J if i x ' Ji 'yi ,ll X pl X il ill lfx X 'N A it l, Y A li Wi Ji v ll H lil , v J -K - ' l ll Xi? MOORE P 'K R 7264 ELCOME, to our thirteen new teachers and to our two hun- dred eighty-two new pupils who transferred from Lincolnl We all know how much you must have disliked changing your school and we are doing all possible to make you feel more at home. We hope you will consider this your school as much as it is ours. Two of our teachers left us and thirteen new ones were added to accom- modate the increase in our student body. Mr. Elwick, who has taken a position with the government, will be greatly missed by all. Mr. l-lull was transferred to Roosevelt to assist in coaching athletics. We have been very happy to welcome our new teachers to the faculty: Miss Rebecca Arnelle, English, Mr. David Burrell, Manual Arts, Mr. Lee Garrison and Miss Genevieve Gorrell, Mathematics, Mr. Charles l-leffelfinger, History and English, Mr. O. K. Krienke, Mathematics and General Science, Mr, l-larry Liden, Commercial, Mrs. Rachel Schmidle, English and l-lome Economics, Mr. Loren Schoel, Boys' Gym and Athletic Coach, Mrs. Eleanor Southern, Attendance, Mrs. Julia Torrico, English and French, Miss Pauline Thomas, English and new Girls'Athletic Coach, Mrs. l-lerta Ward, Commercial. This year many students will pass out of our halls and into universities and the business world. Our teachers, however, remain to assist and to guide the lives of the students who are continually coming and going. They have prepared a sound foundation upon which our lives are built, and in years to come we will always look back and thank them for their leadership. Due to the untiring work of our principal, Otto L. Luther, and his com- petent assistants, busses were provided for the benefit of the students living in the Magnolia, Lawton and lnterbay districts. ln the short time that they have been in use these busses have proved very valuable to the school as well as to the students who use them. During the school year of i935-36, the maximum number of students attending Queen Anne was l888. l-lowever, during the current year there was an increase of two hundred seventy-two students, thus raising the maximum to Zl 60. Our teachers are to be thanked for their efficient adaptation made to this great increase. Because of the enlarged enrollment this year many other changes had to be made in our school life. A system of double assemblies was introduced, one-half of the student body attended an assembly while the other half was in class, and vice versa. The plan of having three lunch periods was reestab- lished, it had been discontinued in l934. Many new 7 340 classes were orga- nized, these were especially for the benefit of the students who transferred from Lincoln, because their first bus arrived at Queen Anne every morning at 7 130. Certainly these aids to the smooth and efficient running of our school so well applied by this staff of men and women thoroughly trained in the teach- ing arts are definitely responsible for our school life's success and happiness. r --JANE CRIDDLE ft WA ll, llx will U v V0 X ,.'i ll ll i if l l rc T ' ,lil Aw lf' yiil .J N g XT. i NX ff' Ugg ' W Al il CXJ Ny, lil A V 3 iff' 1 jxylk N I, ll iill QQ. fi! lx lv l Q K ji .X df X' 421 il A .X X. E NEVER thought we'd graduate . . . we really didn't. We accepted the fact that former classes completed their four years and consequently stepped out into life, but '37 to us was a vague futurity . . . something we scrawled on our hideous blue notebooks . . . some- thing we blotted after our names in the '34 annuals . . . something we had sewed on our sweaters . . . but nothing more than that. Queen Anne was so huge . . . so grey . . . so educational, to us. We were till fr! terribly frightened, and a little proud to have relinquished grade school. We ' ty fingered our starched shirts and mended middies nervously . . . we inno- its ,glfm cently inquired our way to the fourth floor . . . we invariably scanned the 9 Jw! rf Kuay for our names . . . we made a mad rush for the door when the first 0, Jt. V wltsinch bell sounded in fourth study-and were instantly quelled when half p 3 Al fthe population bellowed Freshmanll . . . ti f JV And then we grew accustomed to high school . . . or thought we did. We A l J A Ml 'il rushed with the crowd to assemblies. . .we tumbled off our hilltop to football l 'fi , . ,J ames , , . we felt sudden surges of school spirit, but never as much as now J, V V . . . Suddenly we were second half freshmen, with an impressive ll after tg' N? some subjects , . . such as algebra . . . and French . . . and we watched the W N. f incoming freshmen straggle about, and screamed Freshmanl at them, but ill IQ: Q, j Qjnever quite as loudly as we thought. . . and we joked knowingly about V' all J W elevator tickets, though we never actually saw one . . . and we felt pretty Q JH important. . . i8 That first year Edo Vanni was chosen president, with Bill Hawke vice- president, Ray Carlson secretary, Ted Hurley treasurer, and Dick Munger Kuay representative. We won the frosh football championship, under Arthur L. Shelton as coach . . . and we gave a theater party with the sophomores . . . and then we WERE sophomores . . . As such, we were led by Edo Vanni, Bill Hawke, Virginia Butler, Kay Brennesholtz, and Virginia Dearborn . . . We gave another theater party in collaboration with the freshmen . . . and were glad that WE were the sopho- mores, this time . . . Then we were upper-classmen . . . jaunty juniors . . . conscious of our past and aware of our future . . . electing Edo Vanni, Bill Hawke, Bob Hertel, Dick Neuharth, and Betty Herbert. Betty Gibbs was in charge of a Valentine mixer given by the juniors for both upper classes. Again the juniors convened and elected Ray Carlson as president, Mary Elizabeth Shipman his understudy, Tom Papke to pen the activities, Mar- garet Dean to count the coins, and Virginia Dearborn, Kuay reporter. Now we are seniors. We have topped those three furious years of fun and frolic, and have at last had the opportunity to define vocation and give it some serious thought. All at once we realize that graduating is not only a possibility, but a probability-and we are first amused - then amazed. We drop in at the Inn for a soda with the shots . . . collect dates for dances . . . wear loud combinations of colors . . . borrow Dad's car to impress the fellahs . . . order our graduation announcements and personal cards . . . find out how to spell diploma . . . count our credits . . . visualize how we'll look in caps and gowns . . . Ray Carlson again led us as president, assisted by Tom Papke, Dick Strand, Edo Vanni, and Jack Smith. The second half of our senior year we elected Ray Carlson, Tom Papke, Helen Payne, Ted Hurley, and Virginia Dearborn. We are proud of our valedictorian, Mary Shanafelt, and our salutatorian, Joan Hetherington. For our class speakers we chose Will Parry and Whitney Bates. Then came our senior picnic-we were all together once more-and if we regretted just a little that our high school days were gone, we were to be excused . . . Through those four years which sped so quickly by, we were coached and guided by friendly Frank M. Rose, our invaluable adviser. And so . . . until we meet again... All aboard on the good ship i938 for a four-year cruise up and down the halls of Queen Anne. After several days of stormy weather we stopped at port 216 to organize our crew, which resulted with Ray Segale at the helm, Margie Eardley the first mate, Juanita Walker keeper of the log, Hugh Griffiths guarding the funds, and Florence Berg the messenger. As a change from regular ship duty, we met the sister ship '37 and attended the show Handy Andy. After returning to port to take on more provisions, we resumed our voy- age. Ray Segale continued as master of the ship, Catherine Stolle assisted him as first mate, Juanita Walker still kept the log, Margaret Ross signed checks, and Bob Kildall radioed our activities to the Kuay. Several months of smooth sailing passed and then we invited the ship '39 to attend a Frosh-Soph theater party. Y The third year of our cruise we were allowed to roam the upper decks as we were becoming more experienced in the ways of the sea. Again we stopped at port Zi 6 to rearrange the management of the boat. This time Bob Hughes donned the captain's uniform, Bill Stapleton became first mate, Hank Ketcham recorded in the log, Jean Houlette cared for the finances, and George Powers was chief messenger. In return for the kind invitations of our older sister ship '37 to a previous dance, we sponsored a mixer which both crews enjoyed. As the activities of our ship became greater a new crew of officers was chosen. Catherine Stolle directed the course and Peggy Slater helped her when the weather was especially rough. Rosemary Weil kept the log up-to- date, Bob Hughes cared for the money and Bill Stapleton sent out press notices. One day we saw a distress signal flying from Lincoln island. Dropping anchor we found about fifty stranded people whom we immediately took aboard. To make these new passengers feel more at home, a mixer was given in their honor. After the daily chores were finished the boys took time off to enjoy all the sports in the navy. Other activities included participation in several dramatic productions and a tea given in honor of the girls of '37. And so we drop anchor once again and look forward to new adventures and experiences on the last lap of our journey. We want to thank Admiral Kenneth Campbell for his kind advice and assistance, for without him we never would have traveled the many knots we did. - CATHERINE STOLLE. cl Ll N l 0 R ,Xu - fir , George Millie Frances K liussell l Wanda Eilah Rodney Bo Ackles Agnetti Arnsworth, n'f.Alexander Allan Anderson Anderson Auld Ray Millrie Vera X -'Bobbief Barbara Bettie Jack Margie Aurello Austin Ayres Bach Baker Baker Baker Barley tx Fo, ON'- 'Z--4 46- ffazjg' , , we Q- fv- Gm. ,J 624 rw .gfe- Marion Balyeat Margie Bennett Blanche Boularcl Shirley Brown Letty Caldwell Jaque Chappel lip? 44 Marguerite Barker Clarice Bergman Don Boyce Walter Brydges Harry Callow Mary Elizabeth Christenson Floyd Barnes Mary Ellen Beyer Virginia Bradwick Jeanne Buchanan Marylyne Campbell Evelyn Christianson Jack Bartley Ruth Blair Ned Brainard Norman Bucy Betty Carithers Harriet Christianson JU Brennor Beck Ellen Blum Cecil Branstetter Tod Burnam Helen Carlson Roberta Clarke Jane Beckman Clayton Boehm Wayne Brickey Sarah Jane Bushnell Phillip Carlson Joan Closson NIC Doris Beegle James Bogan Sally Briggs Roy A Butchart Kathleen Carrigan Betty Cochrane RS Lowell Beernink Betty Jane Boswell Marguerite Brinck Clinton Caldwell Jackie Caskin George Collins Elaine Combs Gertrude Crook Vincent DeNeui Betty Lou Doyle Lorraine Ellingson Dick Fleming JLINICD Claire Condie Lewis Crutcher Martin Derksema Richard Drury Mill-ie Elliot Everett Flood Dick Coulter Sylvia Dahl Edna Mae Dingler Verna Duncan Eileen Ericksen John Foster Bob Covell Dan Darling Blanche Dixie Ward Duncan Helen Erickson Myrtle Frances RS Jessie Cowan Carol Davies Charlotte Doctor Hal Dundas Pessy Erickson Verbena Francis Florine Cox Irene Davis Jim Donald Ted Dunn Dorothy Fields Margaret Fraser Cathleen Craig Vivian DeBruler Joseph Dootson Marie Durkee Bill Fiset Joe Fribrock Jane Criddle Mary DeLeon Blossom Dowd Dorothy Eckert Rosemary Fitzgerald Jack Fritch Ruth Froberg Ben Gilman Bob Groves Beverly Harland Anna Marie .- Heinrich I 5' Jack l Hoffstrom if Patricia Fuecker Lois Ann Gobler Eleanor Guldberg Jean Hart Ruth Helgerson Dorothy Hogland N Lucille Funke Marion Grandy Jim Haines Ed Hartle Jean Heschelman Dorothy Hokanson '53 Werner Gaerisch Ruth Grant Pal' Hall Pearl Harvey Don Higgins Jean Houlette fl Marylea Garcllin Virginia Green Tom Hammond Elaine Hatton Phyllis High Mary Jane Hoyle Lucille Gardner F Jessie Greenhill Bob rol Hansen ns Kathleen ini , ob ' Hill I off an Hussln Hug es ter Mlfgilffifwiq 'iii J U N l NX Elaine Jacobson Bob Johnson Shirley Jordan Carmen Kjos Tom LaMon Lorraine Lorbeski JUN! The class has had representatives in all fields of school activities, many receiving athletic awards and several holding offices in the various clubs throughout the school. Outstanding among these were Bill Jorgenson and Eudora Britten who had leads in Your Uncle Dudley and the Kuay Kapers, respectively. Two theater parties were held for the Freshman and Sophomore classes. The first one, which was held in January, featured The Three Musketeers. At the second one, held in May, Hearts in Bondage was the picture which was shown. The class' choice of officers to represent them during the spring semester was Boyce Eastham, president, with Maxine Holley to assist him as vice- president. Bob McCarter took the minutes and Archie Gilbert was treasurer. Lois Foreman reported the class activities to the Kuay. The class of l94O feels that it owes a debt of gratitude to Mr. Herb Lewis who has so ably guided it as class adviser. -ARCHIE GILBERT l AAAS' First Row: E. Anderson, B. Ander- son, E. Anderson, M. We were strongly determined to be an outstanding class and we think we have made a good start, ln the fall election, Bob Hass was elected president and Jimmie Kaldall, vice-president, Belle Muir kept the secretary's books and Doris Cook gave our news to the Kuay weekly. The spring election results showed Vernice Monsey as president and Bob Bergeron as vice-president. The secretarial books were turned over to Joanne Mersereau. The finances were taken care of by Bill Eardley. Jay Baumgarten was Kuay representative. A good many freshmen were stage struck. Dorothy Short with her fine singing and acting ability, made a big hit as the leading lady in the Kapers' College Scene. Dorothy Reynard played a leading role in the play Your Uncle Dudley, Jimmie Kaldall portrayed three characters in the Kapers. The frosh athletic season was unusually good. Three of the many out- standing boys were Bill Code, Bruce Jaton and Bert Joachims. We hope these boys will help to- make up Queen Anne championship teams in the very near future. Q 74 NEW guidance program which was approved by the School Board was instituted throughout the nine high schools and went into effect in September. Faculty members have been chosen as advisers of the four classes. Senior class adviser is Miss Nada Overland. Anyone who has a problem should feel free to call upon us, Miss Overland said, the purpose of the guidance pro- gram is to help you. Your making your problems known aids us in our purpose. Junior class guidance adviser, Lee Garrison, stated, ln any program of guidance it is necessary to contact students, and this will be primary aim. I hope that members of the Junior class will bring their difficulties to me. lt maybe pos- sible that I can solve some of their problems. I hope so. Charles Foster, Sophomore adviser, had this to say about his program: The object of counseling is to enlarge the services of the high school and to help the student to appreciate more com- pletely the opportunities ahead of him. Felix Moore, who was chosen Freshman guidance adviser, says: The aim of this program is to give students information and advice concerning vocational and leisure time activities outside of school. The interviews are available to those who need or seek assistance. Many of the students seek inter- views voluntarily, others are asked to come because of spe- cial difficulties. The students offer their sincere appreciation to these capable guidance advisers who have helped them with their problems and vocations. -VERA BEAN. 42 ,v .L .K ., I Z ff 7 f 4 'R ff V V ,M ff X gif P 12 We 253' iw 5 f f ,ff ,f 1 , 59 0 'N 1 , My rf? if , U 2 . -.gag AA Nada Overland H. Vanni booted a twenty-three-yard field goal in the first half. In the third quarter Carlson made a diving catch of Vanni's throw in the end zone to complete the scoring. Roosevelt took a hard-earned, 3-O victory from the Kuays. Elmer Berg, Teddy fullback, was the lad who put an end ta the Grizzlies' winning ways. Carlson snared Vanni's pass to put the Bears in front where they stayed until the last two minutes when the Beavers knotted the count at 6-6. Captain Don Means was awarded the inspirational award as well as being chosen all-city guard. Edo Vanni won the all-city quarterback berth and Ray Carlson an end position. Roy Richstad, clever ball-handling ace ot the Grizzly squad, led the team in scoring with an even lOO points, being placed on the all-city second team. Dick Munger ran second with 78 points. Opening the season with Ballard, the Grizzly quintet made a real game of it in the first halt. ln the second halt, however, Ballard started clicking and ended up with a 38-19 victory. . Traveling to the Cleveland gym, the Grizzlies won a nip-and-tuck battle, 24-22. The next home game against Roosevelt proved to be the best ot the season with the Roughriders getting an overtime verdict, 30-28. Franklin next visited the local cheese-box only to lose a hair-raising battle to the tune of 43-42. The Bears' uncanny foul-throwing and Munger's l5 points proved the margin ot victory. l TED HURLEY EARL LAURENT FRANK PROFFITT JOE BRODERICK ln the West Seattle gym the Kuays lost another last minute game, 25-24, when a wild shot from mid-floor by an Indian player went in, With Richstad and Broderick scoring l4 and l2 points respectively, Queen Anne trounced Lincoln 39-24, after a good first half fight by the Lynx. Ballard's Beavers again showed their championship form and swamped the Grizzlies, 50-30. Back in their own gym the Kuays again beat Cleveland by a 35-24 score. Roosevelt's smooth passing combination smothered the Grizzlies, 47-25, in the next fracas. Hurley led the Kuays with l2 points. A last-period scoring spree, led by Broderick, enabled Queen Anne to take Franklin, 39-35, West Seattle came to the local gym and defeated the Grizzlies 39-35, although Richstad tallied l5 points and Munger IO. The only thing that is lacking is general interest and glory. Reserve strength is an important factor to high school grid teams, and the Kuay second team was one reason why Herb Davis' regulars finished so well up in the standings. J We Gulf Synod HIS year's golf season proved quite unsuccessful for the Kuay Linksmen due to the lack of experienced players. The Grizzlies showed a little threat in the beginning by winning their first match against West Seattle. The threat soon grew weaker when they dropped the next match to Lincoln. The prospects for next season's team is very enlightening as only two members, Jim Wilson and Manager Bill Moorhouse, are graduating. We are indebted to Lincoln l-li for sending over two very promising players: Captain Bob Morrice and Charles Chuck Johnson. This year's team was composed of Jim Wilson, Frank Morris, Captain, Bob Morrice, Warren Peck, Chuck Johnson, Ken McElhaney, Walty Bartron, Bill Schwanke, Hal Dundas, Glen Cunningham, and Bob Clarke, with Bill Moorhouse as manager. Kendrick cooperated with the dramatic department to give a series of exceptional entertainments during the last year. Excellent work was done in the Kuay Kapers and the annual operetta, The Merry Widow by the choruses, glee clubs, and senior orchestra. Queen Anne placed eleven ot its musicians in the All-City High School Orchestra. Showing the abundance of talent in our, at that time, compara- tively small school, this number equals that of several larger schools. Those in that organization were: Jerry Ogle, Mary Apostol, Phyllis Burglehaus, Roy Hargett, l-larry Peterson, Beverly Schneider, Bill Sloan, Arden Stevens, Tom Welty, Bob MacDonald, and Edward Tennant. Queen Anne also had tive ot its musicians in the All-Northwest Chorus and Orchestra which met at Portland. They were: Tom Welty, Roy l-largett, and Bill Sloan, instrumentalists, Maxine Williams and Jeanne McLean sang in the mammoth chorus. Mr. Kendrick and Miss Kretsinger also attended as members ot the faculty. - HARRY PETERSON. '-1 l KUAY EDITORS First Row: Nell Easton, Mary E. Shipman, Bev- erly Player, Molly Sylvester. They represented the school in a commendable way in the four inter-high school debates this year. Beginning the season were Bernard Corneliussen, cross examiner, and Evelyn Gilmour constructive speaker for the affirmative on the question, Resolved, That the Old Age Pension Feature of the Social Secur- ity Act Be Retained. This problem was discussed with Lincoln and Cleveland. Whit- ney Bates and l-lenry Johnson upheld the negative against Roose- velt and West Seattle. The second semester's debate was composed of inexperienced but worthy debaters. After a series of eliminations the two repre- sentative teams were selected. George l-larvey, Jarvis Stixrood, and Ward'Roberts debated the affirmative opposing Garfield and Franklin. James Wilson and Evelyn Gilmour upheld the negative, meeting Ballard and Broadway. The question for debate was, Resolved, That the Local Law Enforcement Officers Be Replaced By a System of State Police. Mr. Miller successfully coached the teams through the debate year. The students who spent their time in preparation of debate, who did not represent the school, deserve much praise. - BERNARD CORNELIUSSEN. 5 HE business staff under the able advisership of Vernon B.
