Archbishop of l.os Angeles I am happy to adclrs-ss a word of congratulation to the graduating class of Queen of Angels Hospital College of Nursing. This day underlines a record of achievement- in studies. in training, in service, but ahove all, in the pursuit of your vocation. ll is a real vocation, for a nursc can ueyer he a mechanical worker: her task cannot he limited to physical actions. You are dedicated to the service of the children of Cod: your hands must give comfort as well as medi- cine: your voice must dispense encouragement as well as instruction. But most of all, your hearts must mirror the Uixinc Compassion, and the love ol Christ Himself. These are the qualities of your training. These are the marks of your vocation. May our Blessed Mother, Queen of the Angels, Health of the Sick. ever he your Model and your Nlother. Wlith a prayer for every hlessing. I am Sincerely yours i11 Christ. 24 aria or sf - e-X - KJVLFHIMVONIKI-1iuAawI up Four we Z?LAAec! ,Mrgin As the morning sun rises or as the fair moon shines, Mary walks with the nurse as she soothes those trusted to her care. Mary watches, guiding the footsteps and hands of the nurse as she performs her duties in the delivery room, surgery, on the floors, or at the last rites. Mary is always valiant and strong, gentle, soft spoken, thinking of others, never of herself, reassuring, a ray of light to those discouraged, bringing a smile to one who is unhappy. May we he like Mary and may she help us to he worthy of our profession and watch over us always. IIIIIIIIHIETIIIITIIIII 4. ' Q- , ,L ag 1 ,N ,. K1 S ' ' ' 34 .31, , ,, ,Q X I 1 lv 'u 'ff f 1. X . She shaped her work upon organization of training schools for nurses and adequate hospitals, always alert to ways of improving the nurs- ing profession. She strove to place herself in the position of both the nurse and the patient and to arrange nursing accordingly. It is after her untiring and valiant effort that our training schools are patterned today. She gave the nurse a code and pledge whereby she strives to practice her profession faithfully, loyally, and open mindedly. The time to bid farewell to Queenis has come and we pause to consider all we have gained during our years here. Three short but full years have passed and we realize what Queenis has given us. We have developed not only physically and mentally, but our opinions and attitudes have matured under wise guidance. We will always be influenced by the standard of values we have gained at Queenis. Wie are justly proud of our success in our many activi- ties. Our accomplishments, however, were made possible through the assistance of our inspiring sponsors. The person in charge almost has to be a fortune teller, math- ematician, and magician in order to provide beds for patients at a moment's notice. There is also a separate admitting desk in the OB. wing. A great deal of bookkeeping is done in Admitting and many records must be kept. After observing the desk routine, one realizes that in this department a big job is well done. Which is the busiest place in the hospital from 7:00 oiclock in the morning itil, well- 7:00 oiclock the next morning? Yes, it's 'gCentral,,, as we call it. There, under the supervision of Sadye Squires, R.N., all the supplies used in the hospital, ranging from intravenouses to sterile bowls, are requisi- tioned to the floor nurses. The student receives four weeks of invaluable training in this department, with the opportunity of learning many things about sterile technique, wrapping, and oxygen therapy. Wexcaf SIA... Serving on a medical floor is one of the greatest challenges to the student nurse. It is here that patients rely solely upon medicinal therapy and efficient nursing care. When a stu- dent finishes this service, she has gained a thorough, practical knowledge of bedside nursing. She lays a firm foundation for the patience, kindness, and sympathetic under- standing which is so essential. A studentis ultimate goal on this serv- ice is to prepare enticing 'cspecial traysn that will appeal to waning appetites. This is espec- ially dillicult because of the many restrictions on diets. Sister M. Beata, RN., HS., is in 4 charge of the '4d.k.', and instructs students in skillful dietary management. Many hours of hard work are spent in the kitchen but the student nurse gains much valuable knowledge during her service. UMA OIQQLLC el9CLl tl'l'lel'lf Boasting a complete surgical unit all its own, the Orthopedic Department is one of the most outstanding in our institution. Heading this department is Sister M. This strange new thing was a time clock. It seemed very unusual at first, and remarks could be heard fmumbled of coursel about carrying lunch pails and wearing overalls, however after a while we realized its importance. Every hos- pital employee punches the clock both before and after duty. In this way it is easy to check on the hours spent on duty, overtime and sick leave. At this particular time the student has a chance to show her manage- ment and nursing skill. In her hands she holds the fate of her patients, hence her tasks must be skillfully accomplished. Under the kind and gentle supervision of Sister M. Geraldine, RN., lVl.S., the student receives assurance that one is there who can help and advise her in times of need. Of Polish ancestry, very quiet, with eyes that speak and a personality that is filled with charm and determination, she has done a great deal for Queen's. She came to Queen,s during the time when war was upon us, when nurses were in demand for military service, and when help was almost impossible to be had. Yet quietly and with perseverance she worked, always keeping those around her united as one happy family. Under her supervision a new maternity wing was added, enlarging the hospital to five hundred beds. Valiantly she worked and valiantly she is continuing to work. The LIBER REGINAE staff, composed of senior class members, has encountered many obstacles . . . raising money, collecting snapshots, readers check and recheck of errors, and the biggest of all, meeting the deadline for printerls copy. We hope, however, that through the very capable direction of our advisors, Miss Bartek and Mrs. McGarry, and perseverance of our Editor-in-Chief, we have given you some of the same spirit we car- ried with us as each day came to a close. The memories are many, and as you look back through these pages in years to come, may they bring to light some of your numerous experiences here. Under the able leadership of Marie Kulackoski, Wfhe Angells Heraldj' has received wide acclaim. Each issue is chock- full of scoops from every field of interest. The events, poetry, jokes, and advertisements cleverly arranged in each monthly issue prove why Wfhe Angel's Heraldl' has superseded every other attempt to publish a periodical. The special talents of Misses King and Shelly have been demonstrated by their artistic abilities in the production of drawings to stimulate readers, interest. Whenever typewriters are heard clicking ,til all hours and the mimeograph whipping off papers, itis undoubtedly Misses Lehmann and Purtell, assistant editors, creating another issue. Rarely does any news escape publication, because every class is efficiently represented on the staff. Misses Spurk, Cooper, Huffman, Renzi, Ahern, and Blais gather all the information that is printed in the famous uSnoops a d My n a '.,Q, 0-- J'v0 . Theirs is the ever constant responsibility of knowing where the stu- dents are, and when they are expected to return, keeping the nurses, home in tip-top condition, and overseeing the students in keeping the rules and regulations within the home. As the graduating student looks back, now' only can she really appreciate how important the house mothers are. Many wonderful holiday parties have been a suc- cess in our spacious recreation room. It also affords other fond memories as dancing to someoneis new records, Friday night Snack Bar , and community singing around the piano. We also have a separate smoking room, where rnuch of our off duty time is spent. lt is a favorite gathering place, even for those who don't smoke, to keep up with the latest chatter, listen to the radio, play cards, or just relax in one of the comfortable i chairs. Sixty-four enniri Courf Looking to the south of the nurses' home, one cannot miss the tennis court. This provides for the needed physical recreation of the students as well as the interns, residents, and hospital employees. After a busy day of hospital routine it is most invigorating to match oneis skill at tennis, either with friends or fellow students. 0012 , MD oggfafy Our training school, would not be complete with- out the library. It has come to the aid of many weary and bewildered students. It is complete with reference hooks. texts, and the very latest medical and nursing magazines. There are many religious magazines and fiction hooks as well. lt is kept under the Competent supervision of Mrs. Rigney, our lihrarian and friend.
