CLASS Hl TORY As graduation time draws near, we the class of l952 look back upon the past sixyears with a feeling of having accomplished our high school education successfully. In the autumn of i946 our long iourney began. Our first two years were very uneventful as we were lower classmen and were left to our- selves. In the eighth grade Mr. Biskup became our adviserand remained with us throughout our high school years. We had shindigs of our own and as we graduated to freshmenwe began to take part in the activities of the high school. Under the leadership of Bill Hull, as class pres- ident, we sponsored the spring dance and decorated the Post Theatre for the commencement exercises. At the end of this year we lost Jim Lane, Clark Mclllwain, Bill Hull, Alice Lloyd, Mary Jo Leake, Tom Swartzel, Mary Jane Snapp, and Bill Roberts. The Christmas Dance atthe Staff Noncommissioned Officers Club was the highlightof our sophomore year. Class prexy was Kathy Watson, and we started a candy concession during lunch hour with all proceeds going to our class banquet at the Staff Club. As June came around again we saw Dot, Kathy, and Betty Lou going to Massanetta Springs on a music scholarship. As the year drew to a close we lost Peggy Boyd, Ginny Thomas, Conard Bryant, Kattina Baty, Jack Bowman, Dot Smith, Ray Wigglesworth, Jack Humphrey, and George Brower. During the summer months tragedy struck our class when Kathy was stricken with polio. ln an iron lung for over two months she stayed in hospitals for the next year and successfully won a hard fight. In our iunior yearwe gained two new students, Bob Calland Carolyn Shoup, with Carolyn and Nancy Vogt later going to the senior class. Murray was co-president of the Hut and Betty Lou was serving as class president. We sold red hats and what a iob that wasl At Christmas time we had our usual party and after a fine meal we went to the Anderson 10

Hospital to visit Kathy. Almost from the beginning of the year we were working on plans for the Junior-Senior Prom. We had it outside on the terrace at Harry Lee Hall and with our unusual buffet we gave a very successful dance. Our junior banquet was at Colchester Inn and with Mr. Ratzlaff and Mrs. Biskup as our guests we had a wonderful time. During the summer months Murray and Betty Lou were elected to attend Boys' and Girls' State held on the campus of Virginia Polytechnic Insti- tute during July. During the course of the year we lost Pat Sumners, Irene Weigand, Bootie Horner, and Fred Johnson. As our senior year began Kathywas once again backwith us and we gained Shirley Hupfer from Texas, Chuck Falkner from Hawaii and had Frank Loftin with us for a few weeks. We'll never forget the day our class rings arrived and the ring party at Kathy's house. Betty Lou was class president again and in November we gave the Welcome Fresh- men Dance. Tom was captain of the football team and he and Murray were both on the first string of the varsity basketball team-. Pat, Shirley, and Betty played on the girls' basketball team. Our Christmas party was the best we ever had. Betty's mother baked a delicious ham which made our buffet complete. lnthe school publications our class was con- tributing as much asitcould. Chuckwas editorof theGlZMO, Betty Lou was editor of the BOONDOCKER and Shirley was business manager. Bob Call was producation manager of the GIZMO. Other members of our class also contributed to these publications. We ordered our caps and gowns: and, in February, we went to Camp Leieune. Before we knew it spring was here and we were having our ditch day, class banquet, senior prom, and finally to top it all off,, graduation. These are the memories of our high school years that will notsoon be forgotten by any member of the class of i952 as we go forth in life to college and our future occupations. 11 .3 '35 K Jw
