Texas Shake It - Senior Day Picnic junior and Senior Banquet Class History By NORMA GLOVER In the fall of 1951, Quanah High became blessed by the arrival of a group of little angels, now the Senior Class of 1955. They looked about the school in amaze- ment. The most inspiring thing they saw was the Seniors. Exclamations of Gee! Look! l-le's a Senior, were whispered whenever a Senior passed by. Of course, npw that we were FRESHMEN and almost grown-up, those silly, adolescent eighth graders seemed to be such pests. We surely had a lot to learn! A little bewildered and afraid of this new thing we were about to undertake, we resolved to do our best. We needed leadership and guidance so we chose Don Wisdom, prcsidentg Billy Cummings, vice-president, and Marie Ennis, secretary-treasurer. Our sponsors were Miss joan Stine fMrs. Harry Hamiltonj, Mr. james Welch, and Miss Katherine Marshall At the end of that year we had begun to see that high school was no picnic. Our Sophomore year began, and a group of wiser boys and girls assembled. Now we realized that to reach our goal we would have to work hard and long. To lead us through that year, we chose J. H. Wilkerson as presidentg H. L Gossage, vice-president, and Marie Ennis, secretary-treasurer. We added to our staff of officers a reporter, Sherry Adams. To help us over the rough spots we were fortunate to have Mrs. Laverne Newton, Miss jo Sue Wilson, and Mr. L E. Gray. Several of our boys entered various sports during our Sophomore year. A girls' basketball team was started, and we had several members of our class who played. This was also the year of the Seymour 'tragedyf' It seemed as if time had suddenly disappeared and we were juniors. It was hard to realize that the months had passed so quickly. We were now ro learn responsibility and co-operation. Under the leadership of David Baker, presidentg Barbara Sims, vice- president, and Pat Landers, secretary-treasurerg we proved that we could and would work hard and diligently. Everyone co-operated in making the junior and Senior Banquet, junior and Senior Fights, One-Act Plays and other events successful. We were encour- aged and helped by our sponsors Miss Katherine Marshall, Miss Gwen Tittle and Mr. E. F. Walker. During our good times at Q.H.S. we began to have hope of finally getting that little roll of white paper called a diploma. How proud we were when on Senior Day we marched down to take the Seniors' place in the front section in the auditorium. Now, in May, 1955, all too soon, we find that we are about to cross over the bridge into a new world. We are now the Seniors we once looked up at and exclaimed: Gee, he's a Senior. Can time really pass so quickly? we asked ourselves again. We have conquered one phase of our life only to find a greater one facing us. Leading us through this most important year in high school are H. L Gossage, presidentg jimmy johnston, vice-presidentg Norma Glover, secrecaryg and Frances Hamrick, treasurer. We also selected a school reporter, Jerry Martin. Our sponsors are Mr. Clarence Casselberry, Miss Ellabelle Radford, and Miss Katherine Marshall. Our activities for this year: penants, the Cakewalk, the Senior Carnival, Senior Play, Senior Day, and Graduation, will remain in our hearts as cherished memories. May each of us look back at his teachers, classmates and friends in Quanah High and say sincerely, God bless you for helping me to attain my goal in life. Senior Class Poem By DOUG ROARK Through this toilsome world, alas! Once and only once we passg We want to go out with our heads erect, We want to deserve all rnen's respect. Yes! There is a time that we must face, That we shall see success or even disgrace. Our remembrance of yesteryeats, Bring happiness along with sorrow and tears. Upward, on bended knee, we daily look, And draw our wisdom from the book of books. Study and play has put us awhirl, For soon we will he turned loose in this strange world Life is queer with its twists and turns, As everyone of us sometimes leams, And many a failure turns about When he might have won, had he stuck it outg Don't give up, though the pace seems slow- You might succeed with another blow. Success is failure turned inside out- The silver tint of the clouds of doubt- And you never can tell how close you are, It may be near when it seems afarg So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit- It's when things seem worst-Rest if you must- But don't you quit. We, the Senior Class of 1955, of Quanah High School, of the town of Quanah, of the county of Hardernan, of the state of Texas, being of sound mind, sturdy body, strong will and generous heart do devise, give and bequeath our few, but valuable belongings in this, our first, last and only will and testament, hereby making void all wills made by us at any time previous to this date. My partner, Chester Rockholr, and I are on night- watch out of Certain-Teed. It was a calm night, nothing unusual happening when our messenger boy, Layton Mayes, rushed into my office with an impor- tant message. It'was from the Superintendent of Quanah Public Schools, Billy Mayfield, Billy's message sounded important and stated that he must see me immediately. Upon arriving at the school building I immediately proceeded to the office of Superintendent Mayfield. Billy's secretary, Shirley Dake, greeted us and said that Billy was expecting us. Upon entering the office I found Billy with his chief advisor, J. H. Moore, pacing the floor. 1 soon learned that one of the marked fire extinguishers was missing, and it was believed taken by a member of the 1955 graduation class. This was a very serious matter and I decided to begin my search immediately. As we were leaving the school I noticed a familiar face sitting at ri desk in Civics class. It was Lloyd Walker, still trying to pass that Constitution Test, poor boy. After talking to Lloyd for awhile, we got in our new 1995 Hallmobile, which was designed and built by Jimmy Hall, a member of our old graduation class, and took off in search of the fire extinguisher, Before leaving Quanah we stopped at a service station to re-fuel and who should be running the station but David Baker and Don Wisdom, two very successful business men from our class, While we were at the station, State Patrolman, Billy Cummings, stopped in on his way to the county jail with a couple of drunks. Billy was also in search of the fire extinguisher and told us that he had had little success. Our first stop was Las Vegas, Nevada where we went to the Morton and Young Used Car Lot to question the owners, Ken Morton and Bobby Young. However they knew nothing about the missing fire extinguisher, thus our search continued. That night we went to the beautiful Hotel Sahara, which was owned by Lynn Clements, a former class- mate of ours. Upon entering the dining room, the head waiter, Charlie Berry, showed us to our tables just as the floor show was starting. The main at- traction of the show was jimmy Johnston and his all-girl band. Jimmy had organized the band all by himself with girls he had met here and there. In his band were several members of our old class. There was Frances Hamrick, who played a mean bass horng jackie Phillips, the drummerg and Sandra lngle on the guitar. However, we didn't doubt the honesty of these and began to look around for more suspects, At that time I noticed Kenneth McNabb who had made a fortune in the manufacture of under- wear. Kenneth was known around Las Vegas as the King of the Undie World, quite the hood, we under- stand. Kenneth seemed to be guilty of everything except the theft of the fire extinguisher. Also there we noticed Leon Trolinder, the wealthy oil man, and his wife Norma Glover Trolinder having a night on the town. At this time the next act came on, it was a song and dance number starring the Four Hags and a Stag, which was composed of lleta Poole, Sherry Adams, Edna Pitts, Omagene Havens, and Robert Quisenberry. What a show! After seeing the floor show Chester and I decided to try our luck at the gambling tables, for which Las Vegas was famous. We decided to go to the Ennis casino, which was operated by Marie Ennis, mother successful citizen from our graduation class. Marie was assisted in her work by Dave Jenkins, one of the slickest card sharks in the business today. However my partner and I soon found out we lacked the necessary funds for this type of entertain- ment and decided to leave. On our way out a cigarette girl came nmning up to us, it was Betty jolly. She said she had heard from a reliable source, mostly Hot Rod Hogue, that the fire extinguisher had been seen in Tuscon, Arizona. VV'hile on our way to Tucson we stopped off at the famous Grisham Observatory to see if Dr. jimmy Grisham knew anything. jimmy said he knew noth- ing about the matter, but he would ask his assistants Donald Davis and Doug Roark about it as soon as they returned from the moon. just think-Roark at the moon, I always knew that Boy would go places. Leaving the great scientist to his work, we jour- neyed on. Our next stop was a ranch just outside of Tucson. lt was owned by Barbara Sims, we questioned Barbara, but she hadn'E seen the fire extinguisher. However, she said her hired man, H. L. Gossage, might know something about it. But H. L. failed to help us any. Upon reaching Tuscon, we learned that a Rodeo was in town.We decided to attend that night, but first we had to have something to eat and we had heard that Roger Waldrip was running a candy store here and sold the best taffy on the market today, We finally found the store but Roger was out on business. However his assistant J, H. Wilkerson seemed to be running the business pretty well. That night we went to the Arena to witness one of the wildest Rodeos we had ever seen. The show featured such stars as Charles Denison, Tommy Cokendolpher, and jerry Brandon along with that glamorous trick rider, WaneH Duncan. The gucst SIRI' of the show was Alvin Deel, famous Hollywood western star. But no show would be complete without clowns and this Rodeo had two of the best in the business, they were Eddie Pruitt and Charles Straughan. What a show they put on. But the fun couldn't last forever, soon the show was over, and we had to continue on our search. Next stop, Hollywood, California. Quanah was now well represented in Hollywood by such stars as W. D. Carver, claimed by many critics as a second Marlon Brando, David Moore, successor to Percy Kilbride, and George Boynton, who has taken the place of Pinky Lee on TV. Upon arriving in Hollywood we went directly to the office of Producer-Director Doyle Berry who had gained much fame with that great mystery story of his Dial D for Dawn, Doyle was a very busy man now days, but he invited us to a party he was throwing that night and said we could question some of our suspects there, as he was expecting several of his old school chums. We' accepted his invitation and left to prepare for the party. On the way out of the studio we met james Walter Johnston, who was an assistant Script Boy. jimmy had worked his way up from the Palace Theater in Quanah to his present height. That night we arrived at Berry's Penthouse, we were shown to the guest room by Doyle's butler, Billy Wayne Sellers. There were many famous cele- brities there including Charlie Richardson, author of many top notch joke Books, Taylor Cullar, noted Comedian, Margie Collins, famous recording star, and Pat Landers, new rising western star. During the party I noticed someone slumped over in a chairg it was Francis johnson reading one of Richardson's joke Books. After the party was over, we checked our list and discovered we had questioned every member of the '55 class except Roark and Davis, who were at the Moon in Grisham's Rocket Ship, so I guess we'll never know who had the fire extinguisher, Who's Who English MARIE ENNIS journalism DAVID BAKER Math JERRY MARTIN Vocational Agriculture DON WISDOM Science Band H.
