In the pages of the 1953 CHIEF we have tried to picture for you many of those happy hours and perhaps a few of those less happy. In an ef- fort to include more pictures, we have omitted all division pages and have added a directory of organizations listing names of officers and members of each club. We hope you will like this new arrange- ment of your annual. THE. Gray, had a very successful year. Aided by a loyal Band Booster's Club, they were able to make enough money to add several instruments to the band and to buy new uniforms for the coming year. The band played at all pep rallies, gave several concerts, per- formed at all football garnes, took part in the Santa Rosa parade and Midwestern Homecoming parade, and competed in both state and out-of-state contests where they made excellent ratings both in marching and in concert playing. The band takes part in pep rally Mr. Gray points an accusing finger during rehearsal. Q Q I fb di .IUNICR HIGH BAND Quana.h's Junior High Band of sixty mernbers, under the direction of L. SENIOR CLASS HISTGRY bl' Bill Neal lt was in the fall of 1949 that a small frightened group of hoodlums first raided the stately halls of dear old QHS in their quest of further mischief--er knowledge. Yes, you guessed it, it was the Freshmen of '49--Seniors of '53 that is, We had just graduated from the tennis shoe and pigtail age and were now on the threshold of much greater achievements, Having blissfully conquered Reagan and Travis, we now felt equal to the challenge. The first obstacle in our conspiracy came in the bulky form of Mr, William Howorth fthe little man with the red wig.7 We later found that he was a valuable friend, Our gang elected as its ring leaders the first year Bobby Williams as President, Barbara Coats as Vice President and Martha Jane Brandon as Secretary-Treasurer, It was interesting to note that during our first year in high school that several of our boys made the first team in some of the sports Our sponsors for this year were: Watkins. Robbins, Anderson and Beaman, We spent most of the year learning the tricks of the trade. Making marvelous strides the first year, we re-elected Bobby Williams as Presi- dent, with John McCrary as Vice President and Dan Hook as Secretary-Treasurer, This year many of the boys broke into the athletic field, We felt that we now had become full fledged members of the high school society, Our sponsors were Mr, Richardson and Mrs. Holcomb. During our Junior year we ran into great difficulties in the way of a certain history teacher. We were enslaved for a solid year with reports, themes, clippings, notebooks, etc, We put on the Junior-Senior banquet which proved to be a big success. Uokes and all,j As our leaders we elected Earl Ennis as President, Pat Teel as Vice President and Dan Hook as Secretary- Treasurer. Our sponsors were Miss Ashcraft, Miss Caswell and Mr. Conley. On our last step in the hall of wisdom we slipped on a greasy Civics book and fell flat on our face into another half year in the history pit. This was the year of the great football queen squabble, basketball district championship, and also the great Seymour Tragedy. Some of our outstanding undertakings included: Senior picnic, senior party, Senior play, senior carnival, graduation and our senior trip. As our leaders for this year the now very literate seniors elected Martha Brandon, President, Dan Hook, Vice President, Barbara Coats, Secretary, Nelwyn McSpadden, Treasurer and Yvonne Price as Reporter, Our sponsors this year are: Miss Radford, Miss Marshall and Mr. Casselberry, Looking back on our high school days we can say that we have enjoyed them and will al- ways remember them as some of our happiest times. And now this word from the wise to you underclassmen: If at first you don't suc- ceed--quit--don't make a fool of yourself , , . THE ENDV' SENIOR CLASS WILL by Bobby Jones We the Senior Class of 1953 being of sound mind sturdy body strong will and not wishing to remember the hardships which occurred during the past four years do devise give and bequeath our few but valuable belong ings in this our first last and only will and testimony here by making void all wills made by us at any time previous to this date Martha Jane Brandon leave my position as President of the Senior Class to some unknowing Junior Tommy Tillman Buttrill leave my wonderful voice to some next year choral student Barbara Jean Coats leave my innocent ways to Jo Kyle Billy Jack Cromartie leave my physique to Charles Richardson Barbara Helen Daniels leave my school girl figure to Sherry Trulove Alva Joy Downs leave for Eldorado Earl Eugene Ennis leave with what I came over from Travis with James Joel Glenn leave my corny Jokes to Coach Watkins Claudia Elane Gossage leave my ability to get a date to the football banque some underclassman John Allen Green leave my women to Francis Srader Kenneth Logan Hargesheimer leave my long name to my little sister Walter Franklin Hatcher leave my hot rodding to my little brother Horace Arthur Lee Henderson leave Sandra to anyone Bennoit Duane Herring leave my penmanshtp to Jmtmy Jones Robert Dan Hook leave Barbara for good Frances Janelle lngle leave my driving ability to walk Etta Joyce Johnston leave my out of town interests to my cousin Billie Robert Cope Jones leave after reading this for fear of being shot Theresa Gayle Ketchersid leave my Chillicothe boy friends to Leta Faye Duncan Calvin Ray Langford leave for Odell to get hitched Carolyn Yvonne Mathis leave my red hair to Peggy Reeves John Franklin McCrary leave my ability to have everything just right to Coach Price Thelma Maxine McCullough leave Henry to the mercy of any Junior girl Nelwyn Leona McSpadden leave my position as Treasurer of the Senior Class to anyon who likes money as I do Sammy Ann Merritt leave my ability to trifle to anyone who can lie as well as I can Shirley Lee Moore leave my ability to charm women to Jack Dunlap Emma Ruth Murphy leave my giggling to Vada Stone William Overton Neal IV leave Cleston Ray Payne leave my height to Billy Sellers Bobby Lee Pitts leave my noon taxi cab to my little sister Ellen Yvonne Price leave for my little booth at the show Bobby Lee Pritchard leave my quietness to Doris Loveless Gracie Ruth Quigg leave my quietness to Jeanie Beall Donald Dean Ratliff leave my ability to get along with Miss Burleson to James Logan Wayne Eldon Richardson leave for Gordon s Old Fashioned Freeze Vernie Mae Rogers leave my fake um out ability to any girl basketball player John Robert Scharnagel leave my seat in civics to some poor Junior, Helen Jean Sparkman leave my Oklahoma boy-friends to Peggy Teel. Superintendent f x ' Principal MEMORIES SHIRLEY TURPEN In future years when we've grown o And in our laps our hands we fold Memories from school days we hold. We tried to do the best we could We took the bad we took the good And thought we did all that we should. Then we thought our work was in vain Now look back to what we did gain Without much suffering or much pain, In spite of our doubts and our fears We finally came to our last year In each good bye we shed a tear We realized the end had come To leave our friends, and all the fun This was one bout of life we d won We parted from dear Quanah High And said to each a fond good bye BY ld, And left to each a parting sigh, 5 r CLASS PROPHECY by DAN HOOK I Dan Hook world correspondent for the Slobantan News Servrce xn thrs the year 1973 have been asstgned to report on condrttons tn the world My ptlot
