We ' ' 4 new ACT 1: FRESHIVIAN YEAR We portrayed typical freshmen as we made our entrance into high school. At a party given us by the sophomore class, we were introduced to our teachers and uppers classmen. The spotlight that year pin-pointed our trip to the Franklin lnstitute, where we marveled over the Fels Planetarium demonstration, Reason for the Seasons. We will remember our invasion of the large edifice with mixed emotions. loan Springer earned the General Science prize and starred in the Lehigh Valley Science Fair when she won the title, Nlunior Grand Champion, for her project on prehistoric animals. For their outstanding work as ninth graders, loan Springer and Peter Schulz received the American Legion awards. That spring our attention focused on the annual exhibit, the culmination of a year's study, and we proudly displayed our career books, science projects, and art accomplishments to parents and friends. As the climax of the first act, we captured the baseball campaign by soliciting 5515199 worth of season tickets, and assisted by Miss Lorraine Conway, former school nurse, energetically vended refreshments at spring games. ACT II: SOPHOMORE YEAR The principal actors in our four-year production assumed their roles in class activities as we elected Mr, Richard Strayer, adviser, Ronald Hilmer, president, lames Leister, vice president, Mariellen Smith, secretary, and Alicia Cygan, treasurer. For our first group project, we gave the traditional Get-Acguainted Party for the freshmen, Members of the cast assembled in the Q.H.S. gym in October, and following a hilarious ses- sion of dancing and games, began to know their classmates better. We won the basketball campaign as the reward for two weeks of vigorous selling. Since the girls of the class sold the greater number of tickets, for a day they walked empty-handed through the halls while the boys struggled with piles of books. Because she was elected state student council vice president, Mariellen Smith had the oppore tunity of attending the National Student Council Convention at Evanston, lllinois, in lune. After a spirited campaign, Pat Repash received congratulations upon her election as 'lveep of the l952-53 Student Council, Our class hats, pennants, and emblems arrived in the spring, and we sewed the emblems on coats and jackets, hung the banners in our rooms, and for a snort time proudly sported our red and gray caps in classes. Schantz, M Shower We few ' New courses and teachers presented seemingly enormous obstacles as we freshmen plunged into the mysteries of algebra problems, scientific principles, and English participles. Cur first encounter with the classics came as we struggled through the reading of The Prince and the Paupern and The Ancient Mariner. in December an eager Latin class visited the University Museum in Philadelphia. interest in ancient Roman life somewhat dimmed, though, when we discovered fascinating Egyptian mummies. We continually pondered over the coincidence that spaghetti was always served in the cafeteria on the days we dissected worms, frogs, and grasshoppers in biology classes, Carburetors, distributorsfwhats the difference? queried the girls. At least they knew a car had one of each, and one of them distributes gas, doesn't it? Mr. Iohnson shook his head sadly in driver training class. The girls were hopeless! Our junior year presented new and unique hazards as we ventured into room 25, where Mr. Bucks l-ienriettafw became an all too tamiliar cry during physics classes. One day chattering girls in Algebra Il class had to tape their mouths shut with scotch tape, because, according to Mr. Klingaman, the boys need a little peace. l'Our Town was a tremendous success in English class when lim Leister, as the stage man- ager, drawled homely philosophies with a toothpick between his teeth. Never will we forget our pride in classmate Sharon Trauger when she received the Girls' Grand Championship at the East Penn Science Fair for her 'Cotrell Precipitatorf' We also congratulated Dwayne Heckman, who won a third prize in physics, Roger Faut and Ronald I-lilmer, honorable mentions in physics, and Wayne Lippman, honorable mention in conser- vation. For outstanding work in science, Mary Shower was awarded the annual eleventh grade physics prize. Our senior yeareWe seemed to become more prankish than scholarly as we realized how short a time was left to be together. As a pause in the rigors of PO D. studies, we delighted in sidetracking Miss Neamand into discussing Washington. The roles we portrayed in the absorbing drama were not all humorous, for we now feel prepared to proceed further with our education. TOP PICTURE: ENGLISH CLASS BOTTOM PICTURE: P.O.D. I I f I Q o Q o Q 0 Our classroom work in ninth grade as Vocational Agriculture students was concerned mainly with the theory of vegetable gardening and poultry husbandry. Our practical jobs were the cleaning of the poultry houses and the digging of the ditches. At the end of the first semester we first wore our new FFA. jackets which identified us as members of the group. Dick Leight brought early honor to our group when he received a first award in the chicken judging contest at the National Agriculture College. The following year we advanced from menial tasks to husking corn, and in class, studied animal husbandry. While learning about swine, Martin Bleam was surprised to be told that OIC, was not an expression of surprise, but rather an abbreviation for Ohio Improved Chester Swine. Fol- lowing a visit to a cement factory and alfalfa processing plant in Nazareth, we were une certain how each material was prepared, but sure alfalfa wouldn't make good cement! Special acclaim went to lack Adams for winning a first prize at the Allentown Fair for a trio of chickens, and Dwight Tuttle for writing the winning composition for a Lions' Club PFA. essay contest. By eleventh grade our thoughts became absorbed with the technicalities of dairy husbandry, marketing, and farm forestry. We applied our knowledge of orcharding in pruning trees at several nearby farms. Donald Van Auken received recognition for winning first place in the Tri-County Area Trac- tor Driving Contest. ln our senior year we studied farm management, learned more about dairying, and by planting shrubbery at Memorial Park, gained practical experience in landscaping. An individual award went to Blake Nixon who merited a first place for his project book in the soybean and small grain class. Graduating this spring, ready to take our place as skilled farmers, are: lack Adams, Martin Bleam, Stanley Geissinger, Richard Leight, Iohn Martin, Blake Nixon, Robert Schmidt, Bichf ard Smith, Dwight Tuttle, Donald Van Auken, and Iohn Wilhelm.
