' I T CLASS HISTORY The time was September 19-ii, when we made the big change. Instead of being lowly eighth graders, we were now mighty fresh- men, one hundred seventy-three strong, ready to show the rest of the school our stuff. We learned that ninth grade subjects were nine times as difficult as eighth grade. so we quick- ly settled clown to business. One of the big activities of the first month was the Freshmen Get Accluainted Party held on the Alumni lfield. Not only did the class get acquainted, but we found that the teach- ers. too, could be good sports. The event was a huge success. It was hoped that other classes would continue the practice since ours was the first party of this kind ever held in our school. The next few months we spent in learning how to use properly the various facilities at our disposal. An up-to-date home room pro- gram was introduced this year under the sup- ervision of the Guidance Department. Every Wecltiesclay' home rooms held meetings dur- ing which they discussed student problems and school affairs. This weekly meeting proved to be a great benefit to all of us throughout our high school careers. Many freshmen made the Glee Clubs, and because the war restrictions were taken off travel, the clubs resumed their tours. Dressed in tuxedos and evening gowns, we felt like real sophisticates. Also, we were highly grati- fied by the ovations which we received. Then came the high light of the freshmen year, the trip to Franklin Institute. The day couldnt have been more beautiful as we seated ourselves in the Levy buses and headed for the metropolis of Philadelphia. Vifhen one bus broke down and the passengers trans- ferred to a full one, it would have warmed Emily Posts heart to see the chivalrous males offering their laps to the female invaders. Some of the places visited were the Museum of Natural History and the Ifels Planetarium. 'lean Mastin got a laugh when she dunked her aching feet into the cool waters of .1 fountain across from the Institute. lfunf On Memorial Day the annual presentation of the American Legion Awards was made to the freshmen boy and girl who were the best all-round students in the class. Gertrude Cierress and Lester Lerc h were the two chosen by the faculty as deserving of this honor. Our sophomore year found us much at home as we started the grind again in September. The vacation was over and we dug in to get the most out of school. The football cam- paign flew by and we werent even close contenders. Were we never to win a cam- paign? Our football field took on a new look. This season will always be remembered as the year .-'- Y.--C , 'wr . 1114. - Y fd gf. fs.---a 4 f iffsfoar ,A' 3 ,yu lfx lt ' 7.,...- 9.11 4 f, -.r s CLASS HISTORY of the dedication of The Memorial of Light to those boys who gave their lives in Wforld VC'ar ll. It was easy to see who the would-be murder- ers of the class were when we started dissect- ing in biology class. Little knives in hand, they stabbed up to the hiltl Ughl Our class threw its first sophomore shindig. a party to create better relations between sophomores and freshmen. Several of our Tri-Hi-Y initiates caused a near riot when they performed in a varied array of weird costumes. Next. we bought our class rings to serve as reminders of happy high school days. Its worthy of note that the girls soon sported rings several sizes too large for them. To show that our class had its serious mo- ments, one of the tenth grade rooms, number 58, sponsored a War Orphan in the times of world strife, Realizing the importance of the act, the rest of the school cooperated splenclidly in keeping up this fine project. At last the great day came. We won our first campaign, baseball. It was great fun running the concessions and watching our treasury grow. Near the end of the school term, we held class elections. The ohzicers chosen at this time proved to be most capable. A new mem- ber of the faculty, Mr. Wisneski, was the final choice for class adviser. We think we found a real worker in this man. Honor was brought to the Class of T49 by 'ludy XX'eiss's placement in the art contest at Gimbel Brothers in Philadelphia. Her work was beautifully done. lt couldnt be September again: it wasl Our class was organized now and ready to go. The first event on the calendar for 19,17-bibs was purchasing class pennants and hats. The green and gray Eton and jeep caps worn by the juniors proclaimed them loyal sons and daughters of the Class of 7111. This was the year of the championship hockey team. The juniors were proud. and rightly so. of their girls who were stars on the tlelcl. All the while. the junior play reading com- mittee was busy making the final selection. lt proved to be that hilarious comedy. Our Hearts XY'ere Young and Gay '. lt was so very different in story. scenery, and characteriza- tions from the usual play that the public .lc- claimed it a huge favorite. Director. Miss Mary M. Stever. won plaudits for her won- derful work. The performances were top- notch. The production left the town guess' ing as to where Emily and Cornelia ever found the many authentic costumes they wore. This was the first big money our class CLASS HISTORY ffontinueclj had made, and we were proud of ourselves. 'l he scene of one of the hest parties in years was the home of Nancy Achey. This huge affair took place after the final performance of our junior play. Everyone connected with the production was invited. Our hearts were young and gay that evening and the festivi- ties will he remembered always. Many juniors journeyed to Temple Univer- sity on lfehruary 26, to attend the Mock Repuhlican Party Nominating Convention under the auspices of the Civic lforum League. The parades, banners, speeches, and cheers made this convention seem like the real Mcfloy '. Approximately 1300 people were on hand to hear the winning candidate for the presidency, Governor Harold E. Stas- sen. get a majority over Governor Thomas li. Dewey .iftr-r seven roll falls Thr- wild thwar- ing of the Stassen rooters was deafening. Clalifornias Governor Earl Wfarren was chosen for the office of vice president. A scim of twenty-two votes was cast by Q.H,S. representing the honorable state of Ten- nessee. One of the last events on the years agenda was the junior Prom, The theme of the hig dance was an under-water scene and was ap- propriately entitled Neptune's Ball. This was the first year in which a queen of the prom was chosen. Nancy Peters, a senior, wore the coveted crown. I-ler court consisted of the following seven junior girls: Nancy Beun, Cathleen Clymer, Alvona Hassler, joan Knauss, Vivian Mease, Katherine Weluer, and Vjudith Weiss. The music was divine, the girls lovely, and the hoys solicitious. As a result, a good time was had by all, and the prom was a fitting finish to our junior year. School days, school daze. dear old golden rule days. They started again, but it wasnt so had this year because we knew we were heading for the last round-up. Finally after twelve long years, were seniors-the king- pins of the schoolq veritable gods to the seventh grade. Before the school hell ever rang, the foothall team was away at camp taking those two weeks of rugged training. Final statistics showed. howev er, that the season was not too successful. lt ended with a bang when the Quakers emerged triumphant over Sell-Perk at the annual Turkey Day game. The tinal gigantic appeal to the members of the class hore fruit in the form of a win in this fabulous campaign. Game nights found our high pressure salesmen peddling hot dogs and hauling sodas and candy, The Quaker Lassies were not standing still all this while. either. They had another han- nc-r team. Although the girls c'ouldn't emerge as champs. they hattled to the end to share a co-championship with Doylestown. After the playful pushing and shov- ing to get seats on the buses, we all settled down and headed south. The lunch stop at Baltimore proved to be a perfect place to snap pictures and shutters were clicking all over the place. The Naval Academy at Annapolis was the next point of interest. After the hot trip, the two huge swimming pools looked unbearably cool and inviting, but lest we take the press out of our clothes, all restrained ourselves. For some unexplained reason the female sex gave their undivided attention to any equipment man- ned by a fellow in a uniform. After reaching the Hotel Continental and unpacking, we went down to dinner where the class was honored to have as its guest, Congressman Franklin Lichtenwalter. Then we had a date to see the movie Take Me Out to the Ball Gained, and a splendid va- riety stage show. The luck of the Irish having completely abandoned us during the night, we had cold, rainy weather for the next two days. Un- daunted, however, we left early for the Bureau of Printing and Engraving. The great piles of greenbacks completely hypnotized everyone. Could there be that much money in the world? Next on the mornings agenda was the visit to the new Supreme Court Building which is truly a sight to behold. The class thought it one of the most beautiful buildings in all Wasliington with its famed spiral staircase and regal marble beauty. The endurance test came when we climbed the 898 steps of the Washingtori Monument. No one had a heart attack but there was plenty of sweating and puffing till the hardy souls of the class reached the SSS-foot pin- nacle. The softies used the elevator. ln the afternoon we toured the yet uncom- pleted St. Albans National Cathedral and the Franciscan Monastery, both places of great spiritual magnificence. A tine view of the various foreign embassies was afforded us as we passed from one place to another, Our class finished the afternoon with a drive through the Zoological gardens. A hard thunderstorm in the evening put a damper on the doings. However, we spent the time at the National Airport. This place is a vision in modern design, the architecture so appropriate to the roar of the airliners on the runway. A visit to a Hot Shoppe ended the evenings entertainment. Friday morning dawned with light, intermit- tent showers which didn't prevent the 13 seniors from seeing the building for new world peace, the Pan American Building. with its Latin flavor of palm trees and para- keets. The noted Lincoln Memorial was the occasion for a short stop to see the great statue of Honest Abe . Other places visited this morning were the National Gallery of CLASS HISTORY fContinuedJ Art. the Old and New Museums, and the Smithsonian Institute. After lunch we boarded buses for the Capi- tol. This great old building which houses our legislative bodies provided a most educa- tional trip, and we saw our governing bodies in action since both the Senate and the House of Representatives were in session. The dome of the Capitol was the background for the annual class picture taken across the street. Congressman Lichtenwalter kindly accepted the invitation to appear on the pic'- ture with the seniors. Following this, the class made an extensive inspection of the li.B.l., a fascinating place. Marvelous exhibitions of our government men at work were demonstrated for the stu- dents. All those who secretly planned on taking towels and silverware from the hotel quickly dismissed the idea after looking through the millions of sets of finger-prints housed in this building. After seeing Letter to Three Wiv'es, we again journeyed to the Hot Shoppe for re- freshments. Shut-eye was practically un- thought of in senior circles when we came back to the hotel for the night. Luckily the last morning was bright and clear for we explored historic Arlington Cemetery, the Amphitheatre, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Particularly good for snapshots were the rolling lawns of those two famed show places of the South, Mt. Vernon and Lee Mansion. The both homes were decorated as closely as possible to the style in the times of XX'ashington and Lee. The last place of interest to be visited before departing from the city was the Congres- sional Library with its millions of books and reading material. This awe-inspiring building also houses many of the original documents of our nations heritage. How everyone regretted leaving this metrop- olis of history, beauty, and cultureg a place of marble, pillars, and memorials, our capital. Hearts were low but voices high as we sang good-bye to Wfashington after a wonderful vacation of busy days and sleepless nights. Several hours and innumerable hands of pinochle later. we arrived in Philadelphia. After eating dinner at Leeds Restaurant. the buses headed for Quakertown. Wfe made Q. H. S. one-half hour ahead of schedule. tired and happy. Love that senior trip Y we all agreed. Our days here at H. S. are numbered with only the Prom, Baccalaureate, and Com- mencement to finish our school career. As we go our different ways o'er the road of life. we will never forget the lasting friend- ships of both teachers and fellow students that we have made here. Cherished memories will always recall our life here at Quaker- town High School. ctzvltzed Ihp golden bcnctlts dcmnd trom xxholc hurtad pu IILIPHIOII m snhool utxutxu unnot be mc lsurcd bs x0 many umm Rccollcmom muh 18 'lux mll rc mum mtmgnblc trusuru KQLIITLILLI thr0u5,l1 lll olr xurs ff,-1 1' N Xxx X 1.1 rf s9 -wr .L-.-C xx WHS 7 6'2- X 5 i Z I J-24 'MW W' 7' mu x www J'W v Z9 4 p 7 1 f, ,n,..' , MM M at 4 1 wZ,m, , , 'N 2 'San Wifi M 42 UMA ww Q . ,.,, 3 QNLKLE QQQQQ Y--4. , , Ll, f'1f l X ' 1 3 :-p Tv ' I 1 . ,Ma ,X- x R rw X. -. s 3 3 W1 1 K .V....,,4 Q., .g., A-A 2 a.. S. cagers started slowly this year, they finally hit their stride by trimming a highly favored Doylestown team in an extra pe- riod game by a score of 41 to 38. This victory inspired the Quakers to greater heights and paved the way to a three-game winning streak. The Panthers are slated to be in the bid for League honors next season in view of the outstanding floor-work done by the juniors. Seniors are: manager Willard Myers, Durrell Barndt, Donald Dietz, joseph Fachet, George Mc- Nair, Stanley Olshevski, and joseph Moyer. SET SHOT! The girls' basketball team, composed mostly of juniors and sophomores, kept the spectators on the edge of their seats throughout the games. Facing rather tough competition, the girls made a good showing. Their fighting spirit and love of the game made each quarter a display of enthusiasm and determination for a victorious outcome. It was the leadership of co-captains, jean Mattis and Cookie Weber, which kept the team on its toes and fighting cooperatively. The seniors on the team were: jean Mattis, Doreen Underkoffler, Cookie Weber, and janet Neiman, manager. 4--I BOYS' BASKETBALL TEAM In-ft vo ltiglit, First liww. tSvutvcll1 NV. XYnlt'i-.
