Some of us were new and probably a little afraid as we timidly walked down the halls for the first time. We could see some of our number going into wrong classrooms, others be- ing lost, and still others, who were acquainted with this school system, having no diffi- culties at all. Nevertheless we soon settled down to our studies and became acquainted with the students and with the pa- tient faculty, who helped to guide us for our next four years. Let us look back and review some of the incidents that took place and the things we accomplished during our high school days. lt was l94l when the class of '45 was organized for the first time. We had a wonderful time that year. There were football, hockey, basketball, and baseball games, plays, and other entertainments which we enjoyed. This life seemed so different from that of the past. Our first campaign fbaseballl we won, and this gave us the first sum of money for our treasury. We can also remember that beautiful Flpril morning when the whole class piled into Le-vy's buses and went to Phil- adelphia to spend the day. Mr. Buck was taking us to the Franklin Institute. Qfter we had had our papa-da-sickles' and our ice-a-da-cream, we started our tour of the Institute Several boys walked around by themselves all day, having decided that they wanted to view the educational exhibits of the Institute without the in- terference of the fairer sey. That was the beginning of the Bachelor Club fwhich slowly dwindled as the years passed byl. ln spite of those who didn't believe in sign: and got into the wrong places and those who rode the elevator: until they were told to walk, we finally got everyone as- sembled in the bar fmilkl Plfter Mr Buck had gathered in it-5 n ' X Xkanmln w W - ' ng 1 x I ,Eli - 'il ' 2. itklll 13. This homeward trip proved to be an exciting garne of tag among the three busses, with the lzttle yellow one in the lead We had a lot of fun, but we also gained some valuable knowledge which we will never forget. The fall of 42 quickly carrie The school bells were ring.ng their familiar sounds again We entered with an energetic feeling, hoping to mark down another successful year. Our sophomore year was a very poor one for campaigns To our regret we lost every one of them Two memorable events occurred during this year. One was the ordering and receiving of our class rings. We had them earlier than previous classes because of the war. Plnother event was the invitation to the Iunior Prom This was the first one we had ever attended. During this year we were saddened by the sudden death of one of our classmates, Hildegarde Lang The Junior year began with the election of our class officers and class adviser We selected our class colors, flower, and motto. We also ordered and received our class hats and pennants We worked hard in the football campaign that year and won it after very keen competition from the sev- enth grade. We gave our first play, UThe Fighting Littlesf' under the direction of Miss Stever. lt was a great success. We also sponsored the Iunzor Prom. This was held in the gym, which was beautifully decorated to represent a South Sea Island. Qt the end of the year we naa a doggie roast at Ezcnners Grove. We played garnes and went boating Qfter dark we sat around the large bonfire, roasting peanuts and singing songs Our track team suffered the next day when Osie' came in a lame fourth. ln contrast to the sophomore year the Junior year had been a very active one The trearse CLASS ury had begun to swell. Our hopes and ambitions for the senior year had been aroused, The final year of our high school career came very quickly. We re-elected our class officers and adviser, Our sen- ior play, Sky Road, proved to be an even greater success than 'The Fighting Littlesf' lt was somewhat different from other plays, and was very timely. The Recall, our class yearbook, was started in De- cember, Pl lot of work and new ideas were required to make it a success, Our Thursday night meetings proved to be lots of fun even though we missed games, parties, and sleep. To help our treasury along we gave a Christmas formal on the 22nd of December and in- vited grades 9, lU, and ll. March was here and the big- gest event of our high school days came. lt was the trip to New York Because of war restrictions we had to divide ourselves into two groups for the trip. Neither this fact nor rain Ccontinuall could dampen our spirits on this alleimportant occasion, Flfter a dirty and very early train ride, we took the subway to the Hotel Victoria. Both groups visited practically the same places, only on different days, Hn N. B. C. tour enlightened us on the inside work of radio broadcasting, Rockefeller Center, practically a city with- in a city, initiated us into ele- vator rides and looking down at l'toy cars and buildings. We took her words to heart and dug in. The senior section editor really had to jump the students tor the personal write-ups. Those of us who took them to the guidance counselor, Mr. Kilmer, found that he did a much better job of solve ing them than even Mr. Anthony could have done. Mr. Kilmer was very kind and helpful at all times and kept us going in the right direc- tion, The administrative staff also tried to guide us wisely, and, although we must have been a bit headstrong at times, they kept us from getf ting into too much hot water. tAt least it was not necessary for any police car to draw up at the front entrance with siren screaming YD As these people kept our minds and spirits on the right track, so Dr. Bauman, friendly school doctor, kept our bodies on the road to health. Hinkle- or simply being in the way of broom, mop, and sawdust pail! ln spite of our seeming in- difference, we were very proud to belong to a school with such shin- ing buildings and well- kept grounds. Those parts - feet, hands, and heads, which appeared from behind the curtains and furniture of the stage were evidence of the presence of the back- stage crew. They may have looked ghostlike, but were very neces- sary to the success of every stage production. Testing i one-two--- three. The amplifica- tion crew was on hand to produce Sound effects for plays, literary pro- grams, blabs, etc. With- out the power of am- plification, some of the finer things of the stage performances would have been missed by the student body. The job of being Em-Cee for these entertainments and of guieting the en- thusiastically uproaring student body fell to the Literary president, Clair Ortt. The secretary, Margery Schumann, re- ported on previous business, as secretaries usually do, and the treasurer, Ruth Shelly, gave us an account of our collection money at each program. At ll:25 each day, the pupils who assisted in the cafeteria at noon time hurried through the halls to their jobs. Helping Miss Trelfinger in the library is the duty ot the library assistants. During the noon hour, study periods, and after school, these girls are to be found reading shelves and checking books, straightening the library, or preparing displays lor the bulletin boards.
