As in past years, the 1967-68 season was very active for the Quaker Valley chap- ter of the American Field Service. Gary Smith spent the summer of 1967 with the Patricio de Cruz family of Amoreira de Obidos, Portugal. One of his most memor- able experiences as an American abroad was that of meeting and talking with Por- tugal's premier, Salazar. August 1967 marked the arrival of our two exchange students, the lirst being Ren- ate Erlecke. Renate, known to all as Ren, spent the year with Becky Habbert and her family in Edgeworth. Coming from Carlsruke, West Germany, Ren quickly ad- justed to life at Q.V., making friends fast with her twinkling eyes and quick smile. it May I please change my schedule? Our second A.F.S.'er, Jean Walder from Neu Chatel, Switzerland, was hosted by Lex Taylor and family of Edgeworth. Expert at both skiing and jazz piano, Jean made many friends with his fine sense of humor and outstanding personality. This year's much-anticipated A.F.S. mu- sical, Sincerely Yours in Song, was as always an exciting and memorable event with both Ren and Jean helping to make it a success. It was indeed an unforgettable year, full of happy experiences for all involved with the American Field Service program. We all wish the best of luck to both Ren and Jean and hope that they will never forget their friends at Quaker Valley. l The universal language. American Field Service
