We, the 1968 Quaker Quotes staff, dedicate this yearbook to Miss Shirley Stevens. 6 To the Class of 1968: Calvin Coolidge once remarked, All growth depends upon activity. There is no develop- ment physically or intellectually without effort, and effort means work. Work is not a curseg it is the prerogative of intelligence, the only means to manhood, and the measure of civilizationf' In addition to calling for action, it seems that the above also advances the principle that man must not be indilferent to what takes place around him. Man must-if he is to increase his own frame of reference-be aware not only of the evil, but of the goodg not only of the ugly, but of the beautiful, not only of the drabness, but also the brightness. Awareness then should bring action, action to change that which needs to be changed, and action to enjoy that which is man's privi- lege to enjoy. R. A. McNamara DR. ROBERT A. Only athletes who have won a letter in a varsity sport are eligible for membership in the Varsity Club. They also are the only boys in the school who have the honor of wearing a varsity jacket. Having earned at least two 'varsity letters, being a senior, selling a designated number of athletic booster subscriptions, and having partici- pated in all Varsity Club activities will earn an athlete the privilege of wearing this jacket. Membership in National Honor Society is the highest scholastic honor a Quaker Valley student can attain. To become a member a student must maintain a 3.0 CBD average and be elected by a two-thirds vote of the faculty. In voting, four qualiiications are considered - character, scholarship, leadership and service. This year's member- ship of 40 seniors was the largest in the school's history. They are under the direc- tion of Mr. Charles Hinds who is the spon- sor of this activity. Gary Smith spent the summer of 1967 with the Patricio de Cruz family of Amoreira de Obidos, Portugal. One of his most memor- able experiences as an American abroad was that of meeting and talking with Por- tugal's premier, Salazar. August 1967 marked the arrival of our two exchange students, the lirst being Ren- ate Erlecke. Renate, known to all as Ren, spent the year with Becky Habbert and her family in Edgeworth. Coming from Carlsruke, West Germany, Ren quickly ad- justed to life at Q.V., making friends fast with her twinkling eyes and quick smile. it May I please change my schedule? Our second A.F.S.'er, Jean Walder from Neu Chatel, Switzerland, was hosted by Lex Taylor and family of Edgeworth. Expert at both skiing and jazz piano, Jean made many friends with his fine sense of humor and outstanding personality. This year's much-anticipated A.F.S. mu- sical, Sincerely Yours in Song, was as always an exciting and memorable event with both Ren and Jean helping to make it a success. It was indeed an unforgettable year, full of happy experiences for all involved with the American Field Service program. We all wish the best of luck to both Ren and Jean and hope that they will never forget their friends at Quaker Valley. l The universal language. American Field Service 'Now what-was that next line? Quaker Valley again retained its status of having a Big Fivev country in Student United Nations. This year we represented Nationalist China, Upper Volta, Trinidad, Tobago, and Switzerland. As usual, Quaker Valley headed two large United Nations. In December, it hosted students from the Sewick- ley Academy and the Watson Home for a mock ECOSOC assembly, and in February, the club invited delegates from Taylor, Mon- tour, Quigley and again the Sewickley Acade- my to a mock General Assembly. The club also participated in American Field Service activities such as selling tickets for the A.F.S. Show and sponsoring an A.F.S. day in the Spring. Under the direction of Mr. Simpson, the club had a very fruitful year. if vtt Student Council Executive Board: Bunny Griffith, S.U.N., Don Haver, Sec., Becky Habbert, S.U.N., John Mitsak, V. Found weekly in the Herald, The Quill has carried inter- esting and informative articles, all a result of an enthusiastic and industrious stall. Editor Bunny Griliith and Co-Editor Helen Kowal, having to meet the deadlines, worked especially hard posting assignments, editing, and typing the copy. Helen Kowal-Assistant Editor, Bunny Griffith-Editor uaker Quill 38 As always, the Key Club, our service organization sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Sewickley, spent a zealous, hard-working year, performing such functions as patrol- ling home basketball games, providing maps for away athletic events, and doing many odd jobs around the school. The club once again sponsored the fun-filled Key Club Midway during the Harvest Festival, which proved to be both profitable and enjoyable. The members participated in inter-club basketball league, and senior members and oflicers attended the state convention held in Pittsburgh this year. Mr. Schroth, who worked many long hours with the boys, and the Kiwanis Club merit praise for their enthusiastic sponsor- ship of the club. Key Club Executive Board: Seated L. to R.-Gary Smith-Sec.-Tres., Dan Nadler, John Mitsak-V. Pres., Standing: Dave Shaltz, Kent Shaver, Jack Susko-Pres. 39 Key Club One of the new activities at Quaker Valley this year was the Photography Club. All of the involved students, under the direction of Mr. Peluso, were first instructed in the fundamentals of cameras and other photographic equipment. Guest speakers lectured about modern methods of Photog- I raphy, and as the year progressed, the mem- bers became acquainted with the various procedures involved in setting up, shooting, and developing pictures. The members lind the Photography Club not only instructive but also very enjoyable and worthwhile. The Rod and Gun Club, under the direc- tion of Messrs. Schroth and Timney, was formed this year for field and stream en- thusiasts. The club enjoyed guest speakers and learned the safety laws that govern Photography Clubg these outdoor sports. Although the members were confined mostly to the classroom area, they tried their hand at target shooting and fishing during the latter part of the year. od 8: Gun Club The Knitting Club, under the supervision skill and patience required for knitting. The of Mrs. Koehler, was open to any student, members hope to be able to create sweaters, beginner or non-beginner, interested in knit- scarfs, mittens, and slippers to add to their ting. Enthusiasm ran high in the business edu- cation department as the students organized a club of their own. Meeting once a week, the group was host to guest speakers from colleges, business organizations and ma- chine companies. Mrs. Marie Douthwaite and Mrs. Mary Selevos sponsored this activity, but the club was run entirely by the secretaries-to-be. Field trips were planned during the school year to business oilices to acquaint the girls with what to expect when they begin to work.
