Simpson, teacher of world cultures and prob- lems of democracy. His enthusiastic, stimulat- ing teaching has aroused countless Quaker Valley students to a deeper interest in the world around them, while broadening the minds of those so dogmatic and narrow- minded that they never before regarded the opinions of others. His constant courtesy pro- vides a splendid example of gentlemanliness for everyone with whom he comes in contact. Having served as the first adult sponsor and one of the guiding lights of Student United Nations of Western Pennsylvania, Mr. Simp- son enjoys a fine reputation far beyond the Quaker Valley area. His philosophy as spon- sor of VVorld Affairs Club-that the club should not become a sponsor-dominated ac- tivity-has consistently made it one of the most popular activities at the high school. YVorking in the concession stand at football games, Mr. Simpson has helped junior classes improve their financial status for many years. The many students whom he has taught and aided will never forget the debt of gratitude they owe this fine teacher. Dedication To the Class of 1967: Hlashington Irving said, Great minds have purposes, others have wishes. In the years ahead you will find yourself indulging in the trait common to many, that of wishing for one thing or another. However, if you place credence in what Washington Irving said, then you must accept the philoso- phy that with purpose there is action, and with wishing there is inaction. When life is active and purposeful, there is physical, mental and spiritual growth. Mlhen life is devoid of purpose, it becomes apathetic and inundated by atrophy. As the future unfolds before you, may you ex- perience an inner zest for life and stride for- ward with confident and purposeful steps. R. A. McNamara DR. ROBERT A. The dili- gent representatives faithfully relayed their hornerooms' opinions, requests, and com- plaints to the administration and faculty. Besides its vital activities as a student gov- ernment organization the council performed numerous social services around the school, including collecting money for the United Fund and cans of food for the Salvation Army, sponsoring the annual Christmas door deco- ration contest, and aiding at open house and the senior tea. Mrs. Margaret Mfilson gave freely of her time and talents as sponsor. Daniel Nadler, Vice-President, Richard Ramsey, President. Missing: Janet Abercrombie, Secretary. Student Council 15 5. t , Q Imaginative Writing by an enthusiastic staff of some thirty student journalists combined with conscientious organization by Editor Carol Dill and Co-Editor Bunny Griffith to make this year's Quaker Quill, our high school newspaper, more Widely read and more successful than ever. Posting assignment sheets, collecting and rewriting articles, and assembling each Quill issue for The Herald kept Carol and Bunny quite busy every week. Their diligent staff cooperated to the fullest degree to create a highly original, readable, enjoyable Weekly. Among this year's most popular regular features were Dear Quincy, the perennial problem- solver, and Can You Imagine? Miss Harlan served again as the Quill's faculty guiding light. Carol Dill, Editor, and Bunny Griilith, Co-Editor Quaker Quill 18 With over seventy members the World Affairs Club was once again one of the most popu- lar activities at Quaker Valley. This year, with Mr. Simpson as sponsor, the club engaged in a diversity of activities to help its members better understand other peoples and nations. Representing the United States, Nicaragua, Colombia, Yemen, and Niger, about one-third of the members participated in the january and March sessions of the annual Student United Nations in Pittsburgh. In addition, the club sponsored two Local United Nations assem- blies. In December it invited students from Sacred Heart to a mock ECOSOC assembly. In February Quaker Valley hosted delegates from Ambridge, Coraopolis, Moon, and Montour for a General Assembly L.U.N. But not all the World Affairs Club's activities involved the U.N. The members aided the annual A.F.S. musical in a variety of Ways. In the spring they held their annual A.F.S. Day, on which foreign exchange students from other local schools visited Q.V.H.S. and spoke about their native countries. At regular meetings the club undertook several special projects, including the redivision of the globe into new political units. WORLD AFFAIRS CLUB EXECUTIVE BOARD: R. Ramsey, A.F.S.g N. The 1966-1967 season was an especially memorable one for the Quaker Valley Chapter of the American Field Service. Dick Ramsey, representing Quaker Valley in the Americans Abroad Program, spent the summer of 1966 in Northern Ireland with several different Irish families. Although he failed to come home with a brogue, Dick did return from the Emerald Isle with a wealth of anec- dotes and a line collection of color slides, both of which made a highly interesting assem- bly soon after school resumed in the fall. Of our two foreign exchange students this year, the first to arrive was Tom Seren from Kauniainen, Finland. He spent the year with Gary Smith and his family in Edgeworth. Quaker Valley was quite fortunate in having such an able athlete, Coach Nusskern made use of Tom on both the football and track teams, where the friendly Finn earned quite a reputation as an extra-point kicker and hurdler. Tom's wry wit and fine sense of humor won him many friends. Our second A.F.S. exchange student from abroad, Chompoonute Kamthong of Bangkok, Thailand, came to Q.V. later in the autumn. Shawn, as she was known to her multitude of friends, stayed with Bunny GrifF1th's family in Edgeworth. Her warm personality, ever- present smile, and pleasant friendliness made her very popular. The school benefited greatly from Shawn's artistic talents. In March the 1967 A.F.S. musical, My Name is Music, drew supercapacity crowds in a memorable three-night stand. Both Shawn and Tom helped to make the show a success, Tom sang in the male chorus and Shawn rendered an intricate Siamese dance. Graduation this year came with a bit of sadness, for we lost two unforgettable good friends. We wish both Tom and Shawn the best of everything in the future and hope to meet them again-somewhere, sometime. American Field Service Thank you for coming to see the greatest show on earth. Chorus for 1966-1967 was by far the largest in history-nearly ninety mem- bers. Under the invigorating direction of Mr. Leon Szura, the chorus presented both in- spirational and entertaining programs for Veterans' Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. This year's chorus operetta- Calamity Jane, with Dottie Szura in the title role-was presented on the Q.V. stage for two nights in April and was very well received. Especially noteworthy about this year's chorus was its highly diversihed repertoire of colorful and unusual songs. Like band, chorus became an accredited subject this year, meaning that chorus grades counted towards the honor roll for the first time. This year's Key Club raised money by selling pea- nuts on the streets of Sewickley and Quaker Village and by sponsoring its annual fun-filled Harvest Festival Midway, which included an unforgettable pie-throwing event this year that left many members with an aversion to whipped cream for the rest of their lives. The club decided to use some of its profits from these events for donations to the Pittsburgh Playhouse Fund and Children's Hospital. After the officers and senior members returned from the state conven- tion in Pittsburgh this year, Mr. Fezar, the long-suffering Key Club sponsor, breathed a sigh of relief as another season drew to a close. KEY CLUB EXECUTIVE BOARD: Dick Ramsey, Presidentg Kirk Vincent, Secretary-Treasurerg Dan Challisg jack Susko, Vice-Presidrentg Silvio Iera. Key Club 26 This year's Desk Duty girls, who sacrificed their study halls to serve the school as messen- gers, errand-runners, and official Welcomers, included Pam Rich, janet Seman, Jill Amend, Bonnie Spencer, Sherri Biondi, Beverly Blair, Kathy Weslocky, Meg Green, Teela Weiner, Sarita Tucker, Hilda McKenzie, Bev Southgate, Linda LoBello, Gwen Morris, and Elda Sylvester Qnot picturedj. Serving the faculty diligently on the pool of Student Secretaries for 1966-1967 were Bev Stewart, Anna Rornesburg, jane Uplinger, Jackie Miles, Fran Molitor, Bev Grubbs, Cindy Kokoski, Lana Gomolek, Becky Somerville, Linda Klicker, and Sandy Showaker. Desk Dtttyg Student Secretaries The Stage Crew acted as the backstage backbone of our school productions during the '66- '67 season. The boys provided scenery, props, and lighting for plays, band and choral pro- grams, and several special assemblies. Pictured are Jim Sacco, Glenn Crumm, Mark Nuss- kern, Rick Palmer, Dan Zebroski, and Mr. Rhesa Shaw, faculty crew chief. Giving up their study halls, the library aides deserved much credit for their unselfish ser- vice to Miss Donaldson and the school at large. Kneeling in the picture above are Susan Spahr, Lorraine Skeba, Jill Amend, and Marie Burzese. Standing are Donna Manko, Marge Kotula, Denise Bendle, Donna Young, Linda Rice, Kathy Hopta, Jill Eisenhute, Gretchen Harrison, Nancy Astorino, Barb Zupcic, Donna Skrabut, Kathy Herbst, Fred Brenner, Bev Werner, Beth Riegel, Kathy Kerchner, Joan Iwler, Carol Dill, and Sharon Sutherland. Junior Red Cross gave freely of them- selves doing volunteer work at Dixmont and filling Christmas boxes, making picture books, and packing friendship boxes for local hospital patients and underprivileged people at home and abroad. For the second time the group won the Parents' Magazine Youth Group Achieve- ment Award for outstanding community service. W,-N Vietnam and the American soldiers serving there were on all of our minds this year, but the only group at Q.V. to really do anything about the war was F.H.A., Future Home- makers of America, sponsored by Mrs. White. The F.H.A. girls sent friendship boxes to the G.I.'s overseas. They also presented a highly successful fashion show featuring clothes made and modeled by the members themselves, worked with the local P.T.A., and carried on a variety of service projects. llr., Red Crossg F.H.A. Cheerleaders V-I-C-T-O-R-Y! That is Valley's battle cry! One of the largest clubs in the school, Pep Club scored a big victory this year by giving strong moral support to our basketball and football teams. The senior members, who later served at the football banquet, were all can- didates for football queen. Janet Abercrombie Won the honor and was crowned at the Home- coming Game. Rosemary Sirianni and Janet Seman were her junior and sophomore attend- ants. Yes, Pep Club was the nucleus of the cheering section that made Q.V.H.S. the Home of the Hustling Quakers. The chief goal of the newly-formed Ski Club was to bring the sport of skiing closer to the interested Quaker Valley student. Under the sponsorship of Mr. Och, the club attempted to accomplish this goal by organizing an afternoon ski expedition to Hidden Valley and by inviting a speaker from Laurel Mountain to one of its meetings. Pep Cllubg Ski Club Un Morceau de la France, the Q.V. French Club, consisted of ardent French students interested in expanding their knowledge of the French language and culture. Toward at- taining this end, a group of members presented a quite unique dramatization of a trial soon after school began. The club carried on its tradition of distributing baskets of flowers to the faculty on May l, a French national holiday. Once again this year German Club could only meet biweekly but still managed to keep quite busy with Volkslieder, movies, Wochenschauen, usw. The club's chief activity was the presentation of a memorable choral program at the Buhl Planetarium Foreign Language Festival. In the spring a select group of members participated in the Mittagstisch program and audited German classes on the Pitt campus. Language Clubs 32 The Latin Club Worked diligently in an effort to supplement its members' knowledge of the Latin language and Roman culture this year. Memoranda, the club's own bimonthly news- paper, featured articles on such varied topics as Hercules, basketball, and biology. In addi- tion, a number of the members sent projects to the Buhl Planetarium Latin Show. Steve Ack- mann and Ken Addison Won prizes. Although an increased ability to speak Spanish and a wider experience in the Spanish- Latin American culture were its chief goals, the Spanish Club earned quite a reputation as a group of bakers and salesmen. gPo'r que? For the second consecutive year the club sponsored a series of bake sales each Friday after school for several weeks. The proceeds went to pur- chasing Thai and Finnish flags to add to the collection of A.F.S. flags in the main hall and to making a contribution to the local A.F.S. chapter. 33 Language Clubs Membership in Troup 421 of the National Thespian Society in the highest honor that a Quaker Valley actor or actress can attain. The membership requirement is active participa- tion in one or more high school playsg new members are elected and then initiated in an elaborate ceremony. For the 1966-1967 stage season the Q.V. Thespians, directed by Mrs. Elizabeth Koehler, Went Shakespearean in the autumn with The Taming of the Shrew and slapstick in the spring with Pure as the Driven Snow, which was presented too late to be included in the 1967 Quotes. Drama Club's chief aim is to aid students in developing their dramatic talents. This year's members spent many enjoyable hours reading and discussing plays. During the latter part of the year they discussed make-up application and then tried their hand at the grease paint with willing victims. Tliespiansg Drama Club A select grou of the most ualified and interested art students, the Art Club attem ts u q I n u P to learn advanced techniques not normally taught in daily art classes. Entrance requirements are submission of examples of personal art work and composition of an essay on the posi- tion of an art club in the high school scene. This year members met during activity period and on Tuesda evenin s. As its main ro'ect the club com leted a mural in the cafeteria, I - Y S ' P J I P depicting the purchase from the Indians of the land which later became Quaker Valley School District. Among the new activities introduced this year, Folk Music Club probably reigned as the most unpredictable. Each week a program committee of three or four members surprised the rest of the club with a program of varied folk songs. The membership was occasionally hon- ored to have special guests display their talent in folk music. The members learned to appre- ciate the different aspects of international folk music. Art Cllubg Folk Music Club Members of Book Club, another of the new activities this year, read a selection of thought- provoking books and plays designed to widen their horizons and broaden their outlook on life. The club made it a point to study the life of the author of each work that it considered, including The Robe, 1984, The Glass Menagerie, and Green Pastures. Guest speakers also favored the club from time to time. The forty members had to read each specified piece of literature on their own timeg club time was spent in discussions under Mr. Walker's super- vision. The more mathematically-minded students at Q.V. joined Math Club, where they solved challenging problems, listened to interesting guest speakers, and discussed careers in math. Sponsored by Mrs. Brown and Mr. Settembrine, the club enabled its members to broaden their mathematical experience and increase their powers of reason and logic. Book Cllubg Math Club Under the guidance of Mr. Schroth, the Biology Club had another successful year. Mem- bers were involved in making bird feeders, placing pamphlets in local businesses, making study skins, and planting flowers in the cafeteria patio area. They also benefited from lec- tures by noted area scientists, including Doctors Sunder, Miller, and Ray. Membership in Science Club is open to all students with an interest in some field of science. Under the helpful direction of Messrs. Bolin and Niesslein, this year's group benefited in discussions and experiments from the small size of the club. Biology Clubg Science Club nf . W As a result of distributive education being added to the Quaker Valley curriculum this year, the school added a branch of D.E.C.A.-the Distributive Education Clubs of America-to the extracurricular program. Supervised by Mr. Peluso, the club declared it major goal to be the development of future leaders in marketing and distribution. , 7 2 'X The cafeteria was kept alive on Wednesdays this year by a large and enthusiastic chess club. Led by Miss Stevens, new members became acquainted with the fundamentals of the game of kings, while the old pros had a chance to sharpen their skills through tourna- ment play. Dt,lE,C.At,3 Chess Club Sponsored by Mr. Lanza, F.T.A.-Future Teachers of America-became yet another new activity this year. As its name suggests, the club discussed teaching as a career, held panel dis- cussions on education, and enjoyed guest speakers. One of our school's most practical activities, Girls, Shop, originally organized to give girls a background in home mechanics, strove this year to promote a better understanding of common tools. The members learned the proper procedures for repairing minor mechanical mishaps, Worked with different types of wood, and tried their hand at metal casting. 39 lF.'ll'.A.,3 Girls' Shop f'-. ,yy ,l'l'1Q ff, Xiifwiifi ATHLETICS V ATHLETICS IstR01 L to R YV Roolf R Karp J Kuntz L Kane C Lockhart P Sradomskl M McMahan J Evans Gary Sm1th K Alwama M lNusskern 2nd Row K Shaver P Cortese D Conrad D Veshro H Banks L Powner A Sacco T Schelb T Goldsbur J Sradomskx K Lent A W h t E Y kl E B ll 3 d R D B k y as mg on o ey ea r ow ros ey J Weber H Ford J Gibbons A Hrenkevxch E Grbb L Wheeler M Duzlcky S Ackman L Scarplno J Hegner 4th Row T ONe1ll j Ordons Greg Sm1th D Chalhs T Seren D Gerle W Gosnell F Sm1th J McCrory uaker Quaker Quaker uaker Quaker Quaker Quaker Valley Valley Valley Valley Valley Valley Valley Qf THE SEASON D5 my 05,35 North Alleffheny Fort Cherry Western Beaver Center Monaca West Allegheny Carneg1e Avonworth MOST VALUABLE PLAYERS OF THE YVEEK Game N Allevheny Ft Cherry W Beaver Center Monaca W Allegheny Carnefrle Avonworth Football Ogenszve Carl Lockhart Ken Lent Larry Wheeler Dennls Conrad Art NVash1nfrton Dennls Conrad Art YVash1ngton Jun Roolf Gary Sm1th Grew Sm1th 42 Defenswe Mlke McMahan Greg Sm1th Ern1e Yokley Rudy Karp Larry Wheeler Grefr Sm1th John Sradomslu john Evans Greg Sm1th John Evans ta XR Xe K NN RNA fl I y ' j 1 , Q , 1 , I y 4 u ,X 'C 'KPQFVI7 ' -N , v ,Q no Quaker Valley O .... Only boys who have won a letter in a varsity sport are eligible for membership. A var- sity jacket is the ultimate goal of each member. To earn a jacket a boy must be a senior, must have received at least two letters in a varsity sport, must have sold a designated number of ath- letic booster subscriptions, and must have participated in all Varsity Club activities. The club's purpose is the promotion of interest and participation in sports at Q.V.
