Ray Johnson was awarded the Harry ALTERNATE, HONORABLE MENTIONS HONORED ALSO Kent Decker Winner of the Altrusa Kent Decker was the 1959 recipient of the Car- penters' Union No. 470 scholarship award which also carries with it the promise of summer employ- ment throughout college. Scholarship achievement, good citizenship, financial need, and popular- ity are the basis for awarding this scholarship, Kent gained many at these qualifications through being president of Viking Knights, a participant on the tennis squad, basketball team, and a member of the honor society. CALDWELL CLEMENT MELLOR SHARE TOP SCHOLASTIC HONORS With a perfect 4.0 point grade average Bruce Caldwell was announced as the valedictorian ot the Class of l959. Music was Bruces main activity as he was a member ol the dance band band orchestra and a student director. He belonged to Honor Society Spanish Club Future Teachers and Viking Hi Y Marnell Clement tied with Pat Mellor for the salutatorlan honor with a grade point of 392 She was active in Viking Tri HIY Voice of Christian Youth Latineers band orchestra and Honor Society Although she has not definitely decided on a course ot study the tall will find her at Washington State Uni ersi X4 Co salutatorian Pat Mellor plans to begin her studies in the field of educa tion at Pacific Lutheran College his tall Besides maintaining her grade point of 392 Pat was kept busy with her participation in the drill team Future Nurses Club Honor Society Girls Glee Club French Club and Latineers Bruce Caldwell Marnell Clement Pat Mellor Barbara Knull Helen Hammermeister Helen Zlemer Sheila Keogan Norma Merrill Norma Celmer Muy Mccallum Celmer kept the top ten busy throughout the year Scholarship was not the only outstanding quality of the top ten For instance Bruce Caldwell was student conductor of the band while Mary McCallum led the drill team Marnell Clement also was prom: nen IH music activities Sheila Keogan represented PHS as a daffodil princess and Barbara Knull edited the Viking Vanguard Such offices as treasurer of Future Teachers held by Helen Hammermeister ecretary of Future Nurses Pat Mellor vice pres: dent of Future Homemakers Norma Merrill ecre tary of Honor Society and associate editor of the Viking Helen Ziemer vice president of GAA Norma
