SCHOLARS, ATHLETES Victory awards were presented to winners of six or seven ath- letic letters, six students qualified this year. len Jascur, Ken Barnes, Reed Robertson, Jerry Johannes, Ray Johnson, and Joan Kurz re- ceived this top athletic honor Ray Johnson and .loan Kurz were presented gold victory awards while the remaining four seniors earned silver victory medals Carole Ross Karren Hanson VICTORY AWAR DS Gold and Silver Victory Award winners pose lo picture Kneeling are silver award winners Reed Ro Winner of this years Bausch Lomb science award was :'f 50 Joan Ku and my 'loh 5 S d '9 U' en Barnes and Len Jascur silver winners and gold Carole Ross This award goes to the senior who has mam gwgrd wmngr Ray Johnson tained the highest scholastic average in the three sciences biology chemistry and physics Besides science Carole was president of the Girls Athletic Association and was on the annual staff and nn honor society Karren Hanson was named the outstanding prospect in the drama department this year For this honor she received the annual Drama Award Besides carrying the lead roll in several plays Karren was class yell leader vice president of the Girls Club and an officer nn Drama Club and Future Teachers of America Barbara Knull Bruce Caldwell The Karshner Award carrying with it a S200 scholarship is given to a senior boy and grrl who plan to attend the University of Washington This year Bruce Caldwell and Barbara Knull were the recipients Based 50 per cent on scholarship both recipients readily qualified since Bruce was valedlc tornan and Barbara placed fourth Character accounts for 20 per cent of the qualifications with leadership and self support 15 per cent each Bruce was very active in the instrumental music department where be sides being a member of the band and orchestra he played in nearly every ensemble Barbara was editor of the Viking Vanguard president of Honor Society secretary of the senior class and president of her Tr: Hi Y Alternates and honorable mentions for the Karshner award were Gary Nelson and Joan Palo and Bob Johnson and Randlne lund respectively .41 Chosen by members of the band and orche tra as winners of the Ran som Delano Music Inspiration Award were Marnell Clement and Larry Whit man This award was established in 1947 In memory of Betty Ransom a band member who died during her senior year and Elwm Delano who was stricken with polio the same year Honorable mentions went to Sally Pfutzen meyer and Bruce Caldwell Larry Whitman Marnell Clement W . , 'cy . . , . -V Y v ' I I , . SENIORS WIN MERIT AS LEADERS, INSPIRATION A senior boy and girl who excel in both athletics and scholarship annually receive the Logan Athletic Award... Jerry Johannes and Carole Ross received the honor this year. Jerry won six letters in basketball and baseball while Carole was active in GAAg both earned positions on the senior honor roll. Bob Johnson and Darlene Davis were alternates and Ray Johnson and Norma Celmer received honorable mention. Carole Ross Jerry Johannes Carol Christiansen Make la9IH5lU As winners of the Walker Award Mike Baginski and Carol Chnstianson were awarded the highest honor any senior at Puyallup High School can attain Mike who also served as class president in his sophomore and senior years which exemplifies his leadership citizenship and personality qualifo cations which comprise 60 percent of the Walker award requirements Carol earned this award by serving as class vice president for three years and being a Viking Lady for three years The award winners are ludged 40 percent on their scholarship Alter nates for this award were Jerry Johannes and Janice Reeder wl' le Larry Whitman and Carole Ross earned honorable mentions The ninth grade equivalent to the Walker Award as the Junior High Kiwanis Award which this year went to Bob Doud and Marilyn Forsyth The award is based on scholarship with leadership personality and citizenship following in equal amounts IS year Bob was vice president of his class and was a member of the freshman track squad Marilyn was a member of make up club and student orchestra director nv? Werner Boettcher and Kathy Murphy were alternates for this award and Juris Verzemmeks and Shirley Biehn received honorable mention Bob Doud Marilyn Forsythe BIG lNCH WINNERS Big lnch Winners examine their rewards for publishing 1000 inches of copy rn the Viking Vanguard and Viking bound volumes of the years Vanguard Seated are Barbara Thurston Judy Ferguson Helen Ziemer Behind them stand Linda Munsey Janice Reeder Carole Ross and Jan Dlseth 'Q' a student must have published over one thousand inches of copy or advertising in the Viking Vanguard or Viking This year eight senior girls reached this goal Helen Ziemer Janice Reeder Carole Ross Linda Munsey Barbara Knull Barbara Thurston Judy Ferguson and Jan Diseth will each receive a bound volume of all the past issues of the Vanguard as their reward I I I ' , f . Ray Johnson was awarded the Harry ALTERNATE, HONORABLE MENTIONS HONORED ALSO Kent Decker Winner of the Altrusa Kent Decker was the 1959 recipient of the Car- penters' Union No. 470 scholarship award which also carries with it the promise of summer employ- ment throughout college. Scholarship achievement, good citizenship, financial need, and popular- ity are the basis for awarding this scholarship, Kent gained many at these qualifications through being president of Viking Knights, a participant on the tennis squad, basketball team, and a member of the honor society.
