T4 FINE ARTS TEACH Amidst the rumpled carbon paper and the clocking typewriters, journalism students wrote typed checked proofread and copyread the stones whlch made up the Vrkung Vanguard Mr Harold Snodgrass taught furst year students how to wrate leads analyze news count headllnes make up ads and check proofs as well as learmng how to lnclude the who what when why and how nn every story The advanced students took over the bulk of the work for the paper serving as editors managers and proofreaders In addutuon to advusmg the Vanguard and teachung Englush Mr Snodgrass also kept tabs on the annual, Quill and Scroll and the photography staff Clay models landscapes screen and lrnoleum block prints paper sculpture all these emerged from the art classes taught by Mass Gladys Sorenson Sketch books were requrred of all second and thlrd year students sublects ranged from garbage cans to snowclad scenes Design and color were studied to grve students a basrc background for thear art work un water color tempera lnk crayon and chalk Specral protects such as oll pamtsng and room arrangmg were done by third year students Mass Sorenson advised the art club and the lumor class In drama would be actors and actresses learned to appreciate dramatuc art as well as how to perform under the drrectlon of John Draper drama mstructor Begrnmng students gave several readmgs nnterpretatuons panto mlmes and acted out short one act plays Advanced classes concentrated on more drftlcult lmpromptus and Interpretations In the three year drama program erghteen plays current broadway favorites to Shakespeare are studied acted and reported upon A one act play was wrntten by each thrrd year student Mr Draper also ad vrsed the stage crew and drama club

STUDENTS APPRECIATION FOR CULTURE As music poured from room 313 the band and orches- tra practiced for concerts contests games and the daffo- dil parade. Band members headed by director Richard Graham marched in formation for several football games and played for all home basketball games Mr Graham taught band to grade school and lunlor hugh students in the mornings and then returned to the hugh school musl clans fifth and sixth period Robert McNamara director guided the orchestra through many popular semi classical and classical pieces for the concerts held this year He also worked with grade school and lunlor high music groups Both conductors pre pared students for All State and All Northwest Band and Orchestra besides aiding the many small instrumental groups Many wonders of the early Northwest are among the displays in the Paul Karshner Memorial Museum in care of Mrs Elizabeth Grunder During the year Mrs Grunder showed the displays to grade school and high school students The museum as open to the public during school hours After weeks of practice the chorus class ensemble and glee clubs under the direction of Louis Owens vocahzed for the enloyment of audiences at several pro grams throughout the year At Christmas a giant human Christmas tree was formed of members of the vocal music department Besides coaching the ensemble Mr Owens also taught a ninth grade chorus class directed the A Cappella Choir two glee clubs and Nonettes Top Mrs Elizabeth Grunder examines a wooden figurine of Confucius which rs displayed in the museum Lower Left Robert McNamara orchestra conductor and Richard Graham band director loin together for an impromptu duet Lower Right Louis Owens leads his second period chorus class over the lyrics ot a new song 4 if T5
