TEACH STUDENTS TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES Puyallup High School s English teachers try to cover an entirely new progect each year along with the usual gram mar punctuation spelling and speech In the sophomore year two such prolects are presented One concerns using the library and mcludes the use of the card catalogue readers guide and the general reference books Social Irving rs the other prolect covering manners in regards to the telephone public places, parties and sportsmanship Juniors learn to analyze propaganda Beginning with name callmg the study of propaganda advances to band wagons and testimonials The students read the newspapers critically and analyze the current magazmes Seniors in college English learn to write a research paper From the choice of a sublect and sources of nnforma tion the class goes on to cover notetokmg cards footnotes, and bibliography, then each senior writes an actual research paper College orientation is also an important part of this RESEARCH PAPER Barbara Ney hard at work on her research paper in the library wg hiv Qs. R ' class. While reviewing all the past grammar, punctuation, and spelling rules the students compile a notebook with notes on all these sublects and more to use as a general reference obok in college Fraternities, soronties, rush large colleges versus small colleges, armed forces and college registration and the first days of college are discussed A panel of college students who graduated from PHS gives the students first hand In formation on college life and college registrars familianzes them with the colleges nearby These English classes also work very closely with the guidance office on applications for college entrance and scholarships Noncollege English covers a lab analysis The students analyze themselves as well as the 'obs and study applica tion forms and letters Actual interviews and demonstrations give them confidence and training Precise writing is also Included in this course and the students discuss its value purpose and rules Finally the students write their own DEMONSTRATION SPEECH Ruth Ann Patrick does her demonstration speech on flower arranging ll , , . .
