Boys' Club also took a very active part in supporting the movement to establish the Y.lVl.C.A. Recreation Center in Puyallup. Presiding over all meetings was Wayne Parker, president. Leonard Sawyer, vicef president, was in charge of securing assemblies, and Ted Brackman, secretary and trea- surer, read the minutes, Mr, Simons held the position of adviser. IUNTOB HTGH BOYS' CLUB, because so many new students entered Puyallup High School this last year, planned their program with the idea of introducing the new boys to the various activities of the school. This plan was carried out in the first meeting, where speeches were made pertaining to the subject, I The boys also took charge of the Building and 'Grounds Committee. Twelve boys were selected to work on this committee, which was given the responsibility of keeping the grounds free from litter. The Iunior High Boys' Club was under the leadership of David Scheyer, president, Bruce Hunt, secretary and treasurer, and Mr. Croy, adviser. A primary concern of the organization was that of increasing interest in the study of Latin through discussions of Roman life and cus- tomsffood, dress, homes, education, amusements, and family life. All the activities of the Latineers, however, were not quite so studious. The recreae tional side of club work was well provided for. The year's social program began with an initiation at which new members were given a rousing welcome into the organization. Then came the annual Christmas party, which, as always, afforded everyone a good time. Tradi- tional spring affairs to which Latineers always look forward are the very informal Weiner- roast picnic and the more stately Roman banquet, where foods enjoyed by the Romans are on the menu-written in Latin. ln order to raise money for their pins the Latineers sold beanies made of gold and black felt with the letters P H S across the front Presiding over the business meetings was lack Crabs president Marlys Kulseth vice president arranged the programs Pearl Williams as secretary treasurer read the minutes and collected tne dues Providing guidance for the group was Miss Frieda Scheitlin adviser Jb Williams Powell Kenny Po te A nrold Woodwo th Third row Schauble Songer Iennings L ndgren o hes lrtawson Grove Campbell Fourth row C abs tr esidentl Ba mgartne Alge Gentile Srnith Kersey Dome Buck row Bee s ba b lack on Ro ston Long sic R ssell Dykerrian Ke win Glase 35 1 y V . Cooper- ating with the choruses in presenting this program of Yuletide music, the orchestra, under the direction of Mr. McCaw, inspired the audience anew with its contribution to the musical interpretation of the Christmas story. The orchestra was a feature of the special assembly in December at which Governor Arthur B, Langlie addressed the student body. The dramatic productions You Can't Take lt With You and Heaven Can Wait were each musically supported by orchestra numbers, and the spring concert further displayed their skill. Their repertoire included many modern compositions as well as selections from the classics Several members were selected to play as a dance orchestra in Viking Varieties while a string quartet composed of Virginia Wepfer Bob Piguette loyce Botsford and Marian nevitt played on several programs Numbering thirty five members the orchestra was composed of both iunior and senior high students To insure promptness at rehearsals and to stimulate absent minded mem bers who neglected to bring their instruments or music a system of fines and penalties was enforced similar to one adopted by the band The result was greater precision and higher achievement 5-4- OR HtSlftA Fust ro V W ple 1 dent dire tor 'lhornpson Van de Vord B la F Wepfer R vitt Anderle fo te P Yton l Pl d t M Benefl t Thxrd row R Srritl' lacob on Harwood Barth Mankertz R illy D1 me Fourt row cxlarna a Mr Mc c Da 37 ' I , 1 1 - . Suddenly wild laughter issued from room 304. Startled, the belated Student stopped and listened, a look of horror transfixing his features as he heard this conversation: Cut them off just below the shoulders. Say, this razor blade isn't sharp enough. Are we going to let them bleed? No, it's too expensive. Look at the dummy. I think We'll have to have these four blown up. Fearing he would be the next victim of a macabre plot to exterminate the human race, the horrified student scuttled away, not Waiting to hear more. And that, boys and girls, is how the 1943 Viking came into being. The sinister terms are merely a part of the strange vocabulary of the trade. Bleeding describes the way a picture runs to the edge of the page, while blowing up a picture means enlarging it. A dummy is an exact plan of the book, showing layouts, titles and copy. Before the 1943 Viking could make its appearance, endless hours were spent in plan- ning layout writing and editing copy taking pictures mounting photographs and checking identifications This activity began in September and ended only when the Viklng was in the hands of the students late in May Credit for the Viking goes to the busy staff members and advisers who produced it At the helm of the annual staff was Frances Bunn editor in chief On the editorial board were Bonnie Smith copy editor and Lauretta Rogers production editor Miss Engbretson advised the yearbook Miss Sorenson directed the art staff and Mr Logan supervised the business management yrre s rosson nap tseno e to J ge s p od c on ed to J Miss Engbretson tad s J B nn teditor in chietl Smith Ccopy editor 45 Top to bottom: FRANCES BUNN, Editor-in-chief LAURETTA ROGERS Production Editor, BONNIE SMITH, Copy Editor. This change enabled sophomores, juniors, and seniors to join instead of seniors only, as had previously been the case. The objects of the Society were to establish good fellowship among the students interested in the pure suit of knowledge, to encourage scholarship by recognition of merit, and to promote good school citizenship. Qualifications for membership were based on scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Eligibility was therefore dependent upon points earned by grades and activities. Four points were given for a grade of A, three points for a grade of B, and two points for a grade of C. A major activity was given two points and a minor activity one point. Not more than four activity points were credited each semester. ln order to wear the one-bar pin as a sophomore, a total of twenty-eight points was required. To be eligible to wear the two-bar pin in the junior year, a total of fifty-four points was necessary. To wear the senior pin, a total of eighty-two points was required, and to gain permanent possession of the pin one hundred and fifteen points Charles l-lufferd headed Honor Society as president with Natalie Bunn acting as vice president Secretary of the organization was Gloria Dunlap and treasurer was Margaret Benedict l-1ONOR SOCIETY First row Tilner Songer Lewis Underhill Stahl Forbes F Bunn Second row N Bunn Wickstrom Spencer Longuskie Wepfer Wortman M Benedict johnson Bader Thu-d row Miss I.
