Commander I-Ioward W. CI-IILDRESS enlisted in the Navy in 1937 and advanced to Permanent Chief Quartermaster while serving 76 months in his first duty assignment, USS ENTERPRISE CCVA-65. Commander CI-IILDRESS was com- missioned Ensign in August I944, and after attending the Navy Training School at Miami, Florida, was assigned to duty in USS Little Rock CCL 921. I-Ie has subsequently served as executive officer and commanding officer respectively of LSTs lU4l and 938, operations officer and later executive officer of USS PRITCI-IETT CDD 56lJ, and as commanding officer of USS TI-IOMAS I. GARY CDER 3261. Commander CI-IILDRESS attended the Navy five-term program at the University of North Carolina and the Naval School General Line where he graduated with distinction. Continuing his studies, while Assistant Professor of Naval Science at the University of North Carolina, he was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree and elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Prior to as- suming command of PUTNAM on 2l December l96l in Genoa, Italy he served as Command Administrative Officer, U.S. Naval Propellent Plant, Indian I-lead, Maryland. ' f Commander E. A. BUTLER, commanding officer during the first two thirds of the cruise, is a graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy class of 1942, and an officer well versed in destroyer operations and the problems of command. Prior to assuming command of the PUTNAM on New Year's .Eve l959, he had served during World War II, as gunnery officer of USS TRATI-IEN CDD 539D and later during peace time operations as executive officer of USS BRUSI-I CDD 7451. I-Ie has been commanding 'officer of USS LIPAN CATE-855 USS KLEINSMITI-I CAPD 134D and has served on the Staffs of Commander Amphibious Group FOUR and NATO Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic. Upon being relieved on 2l December l96l in Genoa Italy Commander Butler proceeded to the United States reportina upon arrival to Commander Amphibious Force Atlantic Fleet for duty on his staff.
