BUTLER, commanding officer during the first two thirds of the cruise, is a graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy class of 1942, and an officer well versed in destroyer operations and the problems of command. Prior to assuming command of the PUTNAM on New Year's .Eve l959, he had served during World War II, as gunnery officer of USS TRATI-IEN CDD 539D and later during peace time operations as executive officer of USS BRUSI-I CDD 7451. I-Ie has been commanding 'officer of USS LIPAN CATE-855 USS KLEINSMITI-I CAPD 134D and has served on the Staffs of Commander Amphibious Group FOUR and NATO Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic. Upon being relieved on 2l December l96l in Genoa Italy Commander Butler proceeded to the United States reportina upon arrival to Commander Amphibious Force Atlantic Fleet for duty on his staff. LCDR I. CBlack Iackl SCOVILLE enlisted in the Navy in 1942. He advanced through Class A Radioman School, Submarine School, and served in USS R6 CSS 831, attaining the rating of Radioman second class and qualifying as a submariner. In 1944 he was ordered to the Naval Academy Preparatory School, Bainbridge, Maryland and subsequent- ly graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, Class of 1949. From 1949 to 1951, While serving as communications and ASW officer of USS FRED T. BERRY, LCDR SCOVILLE par- ticipated in an around-the-World cruise with Escort Destroy- er Division 6l. 1-le has since served as Assistant CIC Officer, Air Controller and Navigator in USS ESTES CAGC-121 dur- ing the 1952-54 Atomic Energy Commission Nuclear testing operations in the Marshall Islands, and as Commanding Of- ficer of USS REDWING CMSC 2061. Prior to his relieving as -executive officer on 6 September 1961 in Athens, Greece, he served as 14th Company Officer and Reef Points Officer representative of the U. S. Naval Academy. LCDR P. I. GOLDMAN, executive officer during the first month of the cruise, is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Acad- emy class of 1948-A. The PUTNAM being his fourth tour in destroyer types, along with his Wealth of experience, determination, drive, and relentless efforts toward perfec- tion he soon earned the respect and admiration of all hands.
