Foreword PUTNAM CITY . . . A CITY WITHIN A CITY . . . Laughter in The halls, the hush ot The classrooms, The resounding rap ot a Student Council gavel, These are The sounds M The silences of our city. Sounds ot youth, pride, and enthusiasm rock stadium and gymnasium. There is The distinctive of reflection and contemplation mingling vvith doubt and hope. Lite in our city is one to be remembered - treasured. There are sights that Time cannot erase. There are familiar scenes which have significant value to all ot us. There are also Things of greater meaning which are uniquely Putnam City's. Obiects symbolic and inbred, such as Pete The Pirate and his statue, are shining proots ot The student citizens vvho have exerted Their utmost in order To reach Their highest. Our city is one ot movement. The transportation system, primarily Teet, is always in motion. There are movements ot students and Teachers alike hurry- ing to perform Their daily duties with exuberance. These are The movements ot preparation - prepara- tion Tor lite in other cities - cities of further studies, 2

DEDICATION Staff Dedicates Annual 'X . A . Xa V R Mr. Carter Burney - devoted teacher of Putnam City to Coach Burney With pride, the yearbook staff dedicates The 1963 TREASURE CHEST to Mr. Carter Burney, and at The same time, To all that he is - a moulcler of lives, and a Teacher of ideas. Dedication To educating youth has been his principal interest. At Putnam City Mr. Burney is a drivers' education instructor, Track coach, and also The golf coach. ln addition, he is one of The game managers. As sponsor of The safety club, The local chapter has won much statewide recognition under his direction. Informality and relaxation are The keynote characteristics of our coach, Which perhaps is The secret To his success. Mr. Burney came To Putnam City in 1950, previously Teaching similar courses in Defiance, Ohio. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Northeastern STaTe College in 1935 and his Master of Education degree from Oklahoma University in 1949. In The 1940's he was a staff sergeant in The Army Air Corps for five years. His giving many hours of unTiring devotion to our city within a city has made him unforgettable in The minds of all who know him. Mr. lurnoy has invested many years in instructing students in driver safety X gg 4
