Completing his second year as assistant superin- tendent is Mr. Fred Caviness. This year he has continued his outstanding administration of the duties and responsibilities granted to him by the importance of his position. His job also entails co-ordinating the Putnam City cafeterias and working with the building and ground crews of our school. Prior to his appointment as assistant superin- tendent, Mr. Caviness was a teacher at Putnam City High School and was principal of the inter- mediate grades for two years. 20 While thirteen years may be an unlucky number for some, just the opposite holds true for the students of Putnam City Schools. Now completing this thirteenth years as superintendent, Mr. D. D. Kirkland continues in the difficult position as administrator to over 9,000 students. Mr. Kirkland, through careful planning and much thought, has managed to stay one lump ahead of the increase in the number of students. His ability to foresee the need before it arises and provide a solution before emergency action is necessary has earned him the title of one of the outstanding administrators in the Oklahoma school systems. With his responsibilities increasing every year, it is becoming necessary for Mr. Kirkland to turn over a part of his duties to his subordinates. Because of this increase, he has had to put aside some of the personal contacts with students he formerly had, but he is still always aware of our needs and is working to provide a soqnd founda- tion on which to build our future for each of us. Completing his 16th year as our principal is Mr. Leo C. Mayfield. Being the principal of a high school as large as Putnam City is a great responsibility and re- quires much time and effort. However, Mr. Mayfield has a cheerful attitude and will always take time to listen to our many problems. He received his Masters degree in Education from Oklahoma University. He also attended Northeastern State Teachers College and the University of Southern California. Mr. Mayfield first came to Putnam City in 1940 as Junior High School principal. During World War Il he served in the Coast Guard and he now lives in this community with his family. Some of his many activities are the American Legion, Y.M.C.A. Board, Y.W.C.A. Board, Past President of the State Principals Association, and he has recently been named to Who's Who in the South and Southwest. Our principal is appreciated and respected because he is a leader not only in our school but in our commun- ity as well. '-Q...-Q-,,q,wmK K, ,Ji H---.,...,A, 'Rx'- Youth llToward New Horizons tion.
