X ,H Q o o t Q- X I WN This year the annual staff has long anticipated the time when we could formally dedicate this 1959 annual to our sponsor, Mrs. Lois Thompson. Mrs. Thompson isn't just a teacher with an eight hour a day job. She is one who spends many extra hours of her own time in putting out the Treasure Chest, our annual. There are few people who could be more surprized to receive this honor and none who could be more deserving. For twenty-five years Mrs. Thompson has been teaching art. Seventeen of these years have been spent at Putnam City. Mrs. Thompson moved here from Montt, Missouri, her birthplace, when she was three years old. She attended and graduated from Classen High School. Upon graduation she entered Central State College where she majored in art and biology and minored in English. Her practice teaching was done at Edmond High School. She now holds a Bachelor of Science degree. Mrs. Thompson's family consists of her husband and two sons, Terry and Fred, both attending Putnam City. Dedicating this '59 Treasure Chest to Mrs. Thompson is the Annual Staffs way of expressing our thanks and appreciation for all of her hard work, time and patience in helping us prepare this annual for the student body. 3 1141 J ' .1 1 fy! 1 ON TE NTS Instructors . . . . . . 12 Student Body .... . . . 22 Academics . . . . . . 76 Athletics . . . . . 86 Activities . . . . 110 Personalities . . . 148 Index ..... . . 163 3,ffQ :5.'Q.1 ,f 1 ,-'!1?f,1?fS:1iijiQ?:4 ' 2 , X 1- .- -1-V, ' w. , 4 ..f'v, ,. , 'L Y' f. Its shape explains that it is a modern structure, as is the entire school. This entrance is where the fleet of twenty-one efficient school buses load and unload each day. Students get off right onto the sidewalk, which is covered, and enter the building this way. The covered walk is a welcomed sight during bad weather. i 5 w I - I Long, sleek, and modern describes this beautiful new Putnam City High- school. The building is built on a 31 acre tract that offers much opportunity for expansion. There are 40 class rooms and ten more are already under con- struction due to the large enrollment. It is constructed of brick and concrete blocks. The floors, with the exception of the gym lobby, are reinforced vinyl tile. Parking facilities are available for some 450 cars. 1 5252 1 I-M31 2 T Gzfgv . 139511 .,f V xiii 55 A 2 : Z5 ffl? 1, 4.5 .. ,H 233 was ffa, 1231 :aw :if ' gilt? With forty years of school experience our Superintendent, Mr. D. D. Kirkland, has done a remarkable job in running Putnam City Schools for the past nine years. In these nine years our school district has witnessed the erection of many new buildings including the million dollar high school which was first in use this year. As this school system has continued to grow, so have the numerous jobs of our superintendent. Therefore, there will be an assistant superintendent next year. Filling the new position of assistant principal is Mr. Ralph Downs. Mr. Downs was a teacher at Purnam for eight previous years. During those years he held the posi- tion of Pirate Log sponsor, and for three three years was school counselor. fzigx ll !'.ti1iP.l'r I4 Concluding his eleventh year as our Pfincilml is Mf' Leo C' Mayfield. Being PfiUC1Pal of a high school the size of Putnom requires a gent deal of admin' isuative ability. Mr. Mayfield'-s eighteen years of school expen- ence make him well qualified in this as well as other Phases of his job. This year for the first time, lab assistants are available to aid in experimenting in biology and general science classes also. The beautiful new library will accommodate 5,000 books. This is Coach Joe Garrison's favorite saying. It shows how our Pirates met the '58 football season with a maximum of preparation and determination, while taking advantage of our opportunities. This season was a challenge to Coach Garrison and the Pirate team - one which we met with bril- liant runs, exciting plays, and an occasional re- fusal to let the other team score at all while we pushed our score into the 4O's. By the end of the season we had met that challenge successfully with nine wins and one loss in regular season play and a chance to enter the regional finals for the third straight year. As for the individual players themselves, nine from Putnam City were selected for the All-Confer ence and All-District teams. These were George Lawson, David Moniger, Lester Anderson, Richard HN Taylor, Jay Smith, Jay Johnston, Gary Webb, Tom Pinion for his second straight year, and Francis Lombard for his third straight year. Two other hon- ors went to Coach Garrison and Richard Taylor. Coach Garrison was Coach of the Week in the Okla- homan and Times and Richard Taylor was Lineman of the Week. Next year Putnam City will enter a new confer- ence - The Mid-State conference. We will clash against new and tougher teams such as Capitol Hill, Northwest Classen, Enid, Douglas, Shawnee, and Midwest City CYes! P.C.'s old rival joined the con- ference when Putnam didlb. This will he a new challenge to our Pirates. This mightier league shows that Putnam not only plans to attack the future in academics but in the field of sports as welll B TEAM - ROW 1: T. The council is composed of one representative from each homeroom. These students are elected by home- room members according to scholarship, leadership, and their ability to get along with others. The goal of the council is to create better under- standing among the students and to promote activities with other schools. They also strive to make improve- ments in the school wherever possible. Working under a new constitution, this year's council has fulfilled its goal in many ways. The officers attended the State Student Council Conven- tion held in Stillwater and brought back many helpful ideas for governing the school. A great deal of planning on their part paid off in the successful 'sock hops' held in the gym after some home games. A money making project of the council was the All School Play 'The Last Notch' which was a great success. 112 1, .f '3 14 i- . . - A ly x F P ROW 1: K. Martin, G. Lawson, M. Huffman, D. Blackely, L.
