It was truly a living spirit at formed the everyday trials and errors that each of us encounters and will keep on meeting. This spirit of our school and of the American people is symbol- ized throughout the annual by a little ghost named Kasper, who proudly min- gles with our students. To the faculty, the spirit of America served as a guide as they instructed their students and helped prepare them their responsibilities as students and citizens . To the seniors, who are pre- paring to go out into the world on their A own, the spirit seemed to give courage . Indeed, this is a spirit all of us are thankful to have with us . Through pic- l ture and story we have striven to por- ' tray this American spirit in our school. A spirit that is lively as the morning f news, intangible as Stardust, spontaneoi as laughter and strong enough to control thoughts and actions . We want this bool to present to you an accurate account of why you can honestly say, l am thankfu I am an American. 5 5 5 3 5 E 1 8 9 3 ? She majored in business at E1 Reno junior College, then worked in banks in various parts of Nevada, California, and Oklahoma. This is her first year at Putnam and it is our sincere wish that she will continue to be here for many years to come. Many of you think of Mr. Mayfield as always being our principal. Actually he has had many other jobs in the field of education. He attended Northeastern State College where he received a Bach- elor of Science degree. He also has a Master's degree from the University of Oklahoma. Mr. Mayfield came to Put- nam in 1940 to serve as junior high principal until the war broke out. Re- turning to Putnam when the war was over, he started teaching history, Eng- lish, and journalism and coaching wrestling and track. He became high school principal in 1949. Mr. Mayfield is a member of the Board of Directors of the Oklahoma Education Association and a member of the National Education Association and of the National Association of Sec ondary Principals. He is a charter president of the Warr Acres Lion Club and Americanism chairman of American Legion Post 12. Principals Message To Seniors Dear Class of '56: Congratulations are in order on your graduation. You are Putnam City's largest group of graduates. This will mark the end of formal schooling for many of you. However, it should not mark the end of your education if you do not attend college. Liv- ing in the modern world is an education within itself. The world has made much progress in the field of science and invention. However, these many accomplishments in the hands of an uneducated and unsensitive population cannot in the long run lead us any way but down. We must continue to work in educational fields so that the individual citizen will reach his greatest height when he uses these accomp- lishments to serve his fellow men.
