All alone .. the last ot th original buildings at Purdue, University Hall stands proud, facing the Memorial Mall when John Purdue is buried. The first construction bega in 1871, placing the “main build ing”, as University Hall wa called, where Smith Hall is no located. However, the purchas of new land brought about th decision to relocate where i stands now. The building wa dedicated in 1877 and it has served many purposes. Pur due’s first library, the Presi dent’s office, and the Chapt were all located there, as well a classrooms. In 1961, University! Hall was remodeled to accomo ■ date the growing number of ■ classes that are offered at Pur- due. Kara Harman I II Traditions Purdue. What has brought everyone here? A goal, a whim ... a destiny? From various backgrounds, people came to reach for their dreams. They travelled together the path of four short years, entering with expectations, anticipations; leaving with overflowing outlooks, values, destinations. Where did this transition take place? Was there be something special — something More than Basic along the way, that spurred this growth? Each year was as indi- vidual as every student passing through this university. 1985 was a year for making and breaking traditions. It was these traditions that made Purdue what it was, and gave this year a special meaning. From University Sing held on Mother’s Weekend to Grand Prix, Purdue traditions touched every student's life in some way before and beyond graduation. Spring brought students and faculty back into the outdoors, and along with this came the (cont.) T. Powdl Symbolizing power and strength, the Homecoming bonfire made a return to the Homecoming festivities. The bonfire was held at Slayter Hill the night before the October 26 Homecoming football game against Michigan State.

; MOfil BASIC The Purdue Memorial Union welcomes students and visitors to the West Lafayette campus. A popular hangout for students, the Union houses the Sweet Shop, check cashing office, study lounges, meeting rooms, ballrooms, and a hotel for visiting guests. The Victory Bell, a part of Purdue tradition since 1905. stands proud in Ross-Ade Stadium. Gimlet, a Greek men’s leadership honorary, rings the bell after every Big Ten home football game victory. The trnditionnl airborne toilet paper signifies a Boilermaker touchdown during the October 26 Homecoming football game against Michigan State. Purdue lost the game in the closing seconds to the Spartans, 2S-24.
