Experience The Fast Week Grand Prix was ... being chosen to represent your dorm or sorority as the Grand Prix Queen Candidate. Getting posters made, posting them in local shops, modeling clothes at the fashion show in Stewart Center, and being serenaded were all part of the candidates' hectic schedule. Student voting narrowed the field of candidates to ten girls with Chi Omega's Helen Schmidt receiving the most votes. The excitement of being crowned by the previous queen at Slayter Center and leading the parade to the track before the race was the heart of Grand Prix for the queen and her court. Grand Prix was ... partying the whole week starting off with cookouts, fireups, and keggers between fraternities and sororities. Partiers were sitting on Slayter Hill listening to the concert band, running into the fountain during the William Tell Overture, watching the fashion show, and cheering on their favorite queen candidate. On race day, they were sitting outside the track in lawn chairs on top of motor homes, pickups, and rented moving vans, tapping the kegs, watching the drivers through binoculars, and getting toasted by the sun and the beer. Then, at the end of the race, they were wondering who won but were too drunk to care. This is the heart of Grand Prix for the partiers of Purdue. Grand Prix was ... starting preparation after the finish of Grand Prix '82. Board members where gathering sponsors, preparing programs, setting up sporting events, such as the tennis tournament and distance classic, providing a carnival and, most important, raising money for scholarships. Putting in long hours of hard work that were certainly reflected during the week was the heart of Grand Prix for the Junior and Senior Boards. I Burton 14 Grand Prix
