E. Rydm Students Seek Heat-relief Enveloped in a milkshake-thick layer of late August's 99.9% humidity, over 30,000 heat-weary students trudged along the campus blocks for what seemed a 10-mile trek. With eyes squinting from the sun, arms hanging limply, and noses bearing a clinging drop of perspiration, they plopped down by the fountain for a rest and a light spray. The first week reunions with last year's roommates went without hugs as friends exchanged moist handshakes and lethar- gic ''Hello''s. S. Epperson You Can U-Sing The Invitation Is Open Oh, those dreadfully early mornings. One small lamp flared the entire room, hairdryers moaned in clashing tones, and one of 12 showering sorority sisters confidently bellowed, Oh What a Beautiful Morning. True, her voice crowed completely off-tune, not to mention the way it cracked, BUT she always showed up for U-Sing practice. Bouncing with enthusiasm and competitive spirit, she awakened her comrades and forever remained far, far away from the inevitable U-Sing practice burn-out. Crossing his eyebrows in confusion, he strained to decipher that coded mess called music. Often his bold goof-ups sent him creeping under the carpeting, but his efforts and much-needed bass shone through in the final rehearsal. With an invitation to drop their T-squares and calculators, students campus-wide transformed into hundreds of Barbara Streisands and Luciano Pavarottis. Hypnotized by a beat and bathed beneath a row of stage lights, U-Singers smiled, hoped, tried, wiped their sweaty palms, and vowed to definitely do it again next year. S Epprfton U-Sing: A Mom's Day tradition S. Epp« oo It all began in various living rooms where groups of 40 ot more dedicated housing-mates gathered for song practice. In April, these groups came to the Union for Night Sing '83 auditions. Before a full house of parents, friends, and judges, the finalists melodically competed for the U-Sing championship. The final curtain drew and the results were announced: Off-Campus Housing unquestionably took first place. Delta Gamma with Phi Taus earned 2nd, and Pikes with AOPi's finished third. U-Sing 11
