INDIANA PRESIDENT'S OFFICE M 1 X! l926 DEBRIS 1 ll PURDUE Univaasim' 1 l w A The annual report of the performances and the plans of the F ' University for the past year contains more than three hundred printed pages. yt lt is, therefore, no simple matter to comply with the request for a one page W letter reviewing the present progress of Purdue, and the aims for the future. , ' Such a letter has a limit of a little more than four hundred words. However, Q N in my position, one learns to go ahead doing what seems to be the impossible. M , A M ' Like any healthy, living organism, Purdue has gone about its many daily tasks with courage: and 1 trust, with a finely tempered disregard of the petty things that distract and depress. lt may be honestly maintained 1 that the accomplishments of the year will add to the total of the reserve upon which future years may depend. ,V U The state legislature repealed the mill tax law and placed all 4 M University appropriations within the state budget. No increases in the funds i Q' for annual operation were provided. Special appropriations amounting to ix 35eo,ooo have enabled the continuance of the development of the physical plant 'f of the institution so as to provide for old needs and for new students. QI During the year 1924-25, the number of resident students was yd' 5406. The number for the current year promises to exceed 5700. lncluding the 5 tl students off the campus, this number will probably reach 4000. ll t xii Neither appropriations, nor additional buildings, nor the gg? arithmetic of students tell the real story of the year. The vitality and force ' gig of the University flow from different sources. In the fundamental activities - E W the teaching of students on the campus, and the searching for new truths - the 1 5 cold, calm judgment is that our stride has been forward and upward. More than l a half million people were brought into direct contact with the University , n through the efforts of the Extension Departments to make available to the , citizens of the state some of the most useful of modern scientific knowledge. L LL i F1 lt has been within the University that the silent forces of F 6 construction have been most effectively at work. We are proceeding upon the ' 4 assumption that the educational plan of the University should not only LL individualize, but also institutionalize each student. We want him to belong fir' to himself as a capable and responsible human beingg and to become something ,Y of more than ordinary value in the working world. At the same thne, we want I u,j every student to belong to Purdue: and from its traditions, its examples, and Nfl Ulf! its ideals, come to a keen realization that educated men justify their IQ J W education only through skilled and unselfish service to the common civic causes. - wsy- Each year the University must become energized by successful efforts to , establish a proper balance of values for conduct, for competency, and for - 5 citizenship. ? ! - ' 1 February 9, 1926. l Qiiiis ' 2555!
