These represent a synopsis of our experience in college. We came here because we wanted to get somewhere in life. We decided for ourselves the directions we would follow, the meanings we would construe from the signs. The directions could be found on a compass of academic subjects; the places where our personal arrows of inten- tion pointed could be understood in terms of degrees and future professions. But the distance we moved this year in any direction, the variation in our path from the chose compass points, these must be scaled in individual units and evaluated by individual reflection. We invite you to join us in a verbal and pictorial meditation on this theme. UmaA yaO-UMOD 0-1 To Carl H. Elliott, Dean and Director of Purdue University Calumet Campus, whose interest in students, in faculty, and in building Purdue Calumet to great heights, and whose dedication toward high goals for the Calumet Campus have contributed to the growth and success of Purdue Calumet Campus, this, the second volume of the Astron, is gratefully and respectfully dedicated. After graduating from Indiana Uni- versity with A.B. and M.B.A. degrees, Dr. Elliott went on to earn his Ph.D. from Purdue in Industrial Psychology. He taught at Miami University of Ohio and Purdue Calumet previous to be- coming Dean and Director. Dr. Elliott came to Purdue Calumet as director in 1959 and has guided the development of the Calumet Campus since. irection Through Participation Following pre-registration, Fresh- man found their way to the Armory for Orientation. Following welcome addresses by Dr. Elliott and Mr. Hubbard, incoming students were familiarized with opportunities at PUCC. They then viewed displays and booths set up by organizations to interest freshmen. Guides direct- ed the newcomers from the Armory to the campus for a directed tour. Orientation ended up with an out- door luncheon at the Kappa Pi Delta house nearby. Registration found students who had not pre-registered standing in lines, arranging classes and paying fees. After checking and process- ing schedules, and solving conflicts of classes, all students prepared to begin classes. COLLEGE LIFE begins with confusion of registration. Easter is the symbol of this awakening. Youngsters frolic at Easter Egg Hunts to find jelly beans and eggs left by that springtime hero, the Easter Bunny. Grown-ups enjoy the fun of decorating and hiding eggs. Everyone attends church on Sunday morning to show off Easter finery and, most importantly, to rejoice in the lite of the Risen Lord. 23 Initiating new final exam pol- icy, PUCC profs offered oppor- tunity for challenge to all stu- dents. Direction Through 26 ai STUDENT CONGRES OFFICERS: Vice-President Ken Goodwin, President Ed Bachner, Corresponding Secretary Marlene Gransinger, Treasurer Karen Barnes, Recording Secretary Martha Eastwood. Student Congress made many advances during the 1967-68 school year. One of the most significant ‘happenings'' was the establishment of communication channels with the administra- tion to and from the students. Senators established the student- faculty relations committee and became part of the convoca- tion hour committee. Efforts wer e begun to reorganize the Student Affairs Committee. ''Gripe Sessions'' were conducted mn the food lounge and sessions were arranged with bookstore representatives. Student services included reinstating of card playing in lounges, installation of a juke box in the food lounge, opening of vacent classrooms for study, co-sponsoring of weekly T.G.1.F. dances, and teacher rating. Senators planned activities such as the Homecoming Happening, the second annual Spring Dinner-Dance, and the annual Activities Banquet. Student Con- gress assisted other organizations in making the Traffic Court all-student, assuming financial support of cheerleaders, assisting m reorganization of the Boilermaker, and arranging for the sale of Student Gift-Pax for the support of the baseball team. Finally, = Student Bill of Rights was drafted and put to a vote of the student body. Under responsible leadership of two cabinets, Student Congress made great strides in service to PUCC. Former Congress President Doug Fix demonstrates his engineering ability. Ciceronians Speak Out Under the able guidance of Prof. Lee Good- man, Ciceronians represented Purdue Calumet at speech and debate tournaments throughout the Mid-West. At various times during the year Ciceronians was represented by: Susan Clark, Doug Fix, Marlene Gransinger, Warren Griggs, Mike Laramie, and Chuck Starks. Although rela- tively inexperienced at the college level in for- ensics, these individuals did well at the various tournaments, with Susan, Doug, Warren, and Mike winning awards. Serving as a meeting ground for PUCC clubs to discuss projects and problems, the Inter-Club Council sought to coordinate activities and ease problems of each club. Every club was represent- ed in ICC and in turn ICC was represented in the Student Congress. Such functions as calen- daring activities and admitting new organiza- tions related to Student Congress and served to relieve some of the work for that group. Led by first semester chairman Jerry Wilski and second semester chairman Bob Harper, the Inter- Club Council spurred interest in various clubs of PUCC through weekly meetings and discus- sions. Only a short walk from the main university buildings, the house has facilities for discussion, study, reading, counsel- ing, and social activities. Kappa Pi Delta is an ecumenical campus com- munity, open to all students who are sincerely interested in the search for what is most truly and profoundly human. It is a pioneering attempt to draw people of every faith or no faith into a common unity. Kappa Pi Delta channels its energies into a program which includes faculty- led discussions on current and controversial topics, film programs, reading groups, social action projects, open houses for faculty and parents, and freshman orientation. The social side of the program includes dances, groups trips to sporting events, shows and plays, and lecture tours.
