The 1956 Dragon staff salutes Purcell High School s athletic director and one of the wlnningest basketball coaches in Oklahoma he could be none other than Mr LeRoy Matthews more affectionately known as Boney In eleven years at Purcell Boney has turned out some of the finest athletlc teams in Purcell s history His gr1d1ron squads in 1947 went to the state finals and to the d1str1ct flnals ln 1948 and 1949 But Boney s greatest success has been with Dragon qumtets on the Basketball court e1ght of his eleven cage squads have reached the fmal state tournament IH Class B basketball They have rung up well over 300 victories while losing only 60 Off the playing field he has served on the board of control of the state coaches assoclation re elected last year to serve another 2 year term And as one would expect his most amazing feat came in sports as a quarterback in High School at Ross Oklahoma Boney made Robert Ripley s Believe It or Not when he scored more than 90 points in one football game He graduated from East Central State College w1th an A B in educatxon and will fmish work on hls Masters th1s summer Boney ls a devout member of the Methodlst Church and belongs to the Purcell Lxons Club He is married and has three children Ira Jean Robert a Junior at OBU and Davld a sophomore at Purcell Hlgh School . ,, , 2 , , Y ay, I . at .
