THE PUBCELL CONCERT CHORUS Being a member of the Purcell Concert Chorus requires perhaps the biggest sacrifice that any high school student can make, name- ly, getting up early enough to be at school by 7:45 AM for rehearsals. But it pays off. The 1969-70 season carried the Glee Club to its greatest heights. This was the organization's fifth year under Mr. Fogwell's direction, and from only 20 voices in 1965 it has grown to a current 64-strong. Three girls' schools were visited on concert tour during the first semester: Sacred Heart Academy, Regina, and Mt. Notre Dame. On December 12 and 14, Menotti's opera Amahl and the Night Visitors was performed at Re- gina by the combined Regin-a-Purcell glee clubs. Christmas Concert at the Castle this year was on December 21. On Palm Sunday the chorus sang the 9:00 Mass at Assumption Church. Several of the 88 members from the popular Octet ensemble were featured in the annual Purcell Variety Show in March. Regina and Purcell combined efforts again on April 25 tat Reginal and 26 tat Purcelll for their Spring Concert. The highlight, of course, was the special invitation extended to Mr. Fogwell by the director of the Cincinnati May Festival chorus to have Purcell's Glee Club participate in the world premiere of Wilfred Josephs' Mortales in Music Hall on May 23 with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. The audience at this concert included people from all over the world. The Purcell Concert Chorus takes a giant step forward with every concert it gives. It kind of makes you wonder how much longer they can continue to outdo themselves, But they'll think of a way. never-tiring vicerpresident of the Glee Club Denny Hare, 9l John Keenhan falls asleep during his speech at the Christmas Concert. VARSITY F OOTBALL TEAM The Cavaliers were robbed of their first victory against Walnut Hills at Norwood Stadium. Walnut Hills re- ceived the only break late in the game when they tackled punter Steve Halpin in the endzone. Rain prevailed for the rest of the game as they held on for a 2-0 victory over Purcell. The following week, under better conditions, the Hardrocks returned to their pre-season form for an easy rout of Courter Tech 22-0. Dayton Carroll invaded Norwood, out to avenge the defeat handed them the previous year. Carroll's fine quarterback finally was the difference as he singIe-handedly ran and passed for a 14-6 victory over Purcell. The Cavaliers showed their best form of the year as they whipped Roger Bacon 16-8 in their first G.C.L. con- test. The score hardly told the story as the Cavaliers were able to ramble up and down the field at ease behind the strong running of Chiodi and the powerful blocking of the offensive line. In their next game against St. Xavier, the Cavaliers lost a heartbreaker. The next contest was against LaSaIIe. Because of the letdown after the St Xavier game and many injuries, the Lancers waltzed away with an easy 36-6 victory. The coaching staff made an extra effort to rouse the Cavaliers for the game with Moeller. However, the Cru- saders quickly showed their powerful form, which took them to the GCL. crown, and smashed the Cavaliers 41-6. McNicholas proved to be a break in the scheduie as the offense scored early in the game while the defense held the Rockets scoreless for the entire game for an 8-0 win. Against Elder, the offense got us on the scoreboard early as the defense held the Panthers to six points for the first half. However, two big mistakes by the defense gave Elder two quick touchdowns in the third quarter and Purcell lost a tough one, 28-6. The Cavaliers scored two eighty yard touchdowns, against Newport Catholic, 0n the first two plays from scrimmage. The rest of the game, the offense failed to move as the Thoroughbreds scored twice and handed us a 13-12 defeat. TOP ROW: W. Flowers, KA Fletcher, T. Stickley, S. Gardner, M. Mat- Braig, C. VARSITY BASKETBALL The 1969-70 Basketball Team proved to be the spoiler in the G.C.L. Led by all G.C.L., all City, guard Dave Luke, the Cavaliers clashed the hopes of ma ny of the contenders for the title. The Cavaliers defeated the Spartans of Roger Bacon, the coaches favorite in a mid season contest. Even though lacking the needed height, we managed to stay in contention up until the final week of the season when we lost to Elder in the Panther Pit, Bright hopes for the future also developed during the season as two underclassmen - Junior, Bob Mahoney, and Sophomore, Carl Brown developed to their full pO- l tential and captured starting roles. l The real stars of the team seemed to be the group of l seniors who did all the hustling, stealing passes, setting up l plays, and grabbing reboundst This group included Jim Brackman, Jeff Riesenberg and Wendel Burbridge.
