CAVALIER-1969 PURCELL HIGH SCHOOL The Students and especially the Seniors of Purceil High School proudly present the pictures and scores, the interviews, art work, and copy, the write-ups and comments of The 1969 CAVALIER as a vivid record of the achievements and spirit, the moods, the ideals and goals, the unforgettable moments tusual and uniquet and especially the people that together make Purcell High School and the 1968-69 school year - Outstanding among AH. in Gratitude to God our Father In the trust that He leads us to Truth ,.. This book is, of necessity, dedicated to many persons and many ideals . . . To those who in their lives seek the truth and who have shared it with us or sought to share it or who explained the truth of others, to those with whom we worked to build a perspective of truth, our teachers, c0unselors, and guides . . . To all those around us and especially our fellow seniors who offered us a trueness in friendship and in working together Who honestly excelled or tried to excell, who knew hard work and accomplishments or who only dreamed and felt generous mo- ments, to those who showed sportsmanship and trust, who be- lieved in service and showed this belief in actions, to those who were open or wanted to be open to other persons and other opin- ions r , . To those who always spoke what they truly felt And who brought intelligence to their sincerity, To those who were real and, in being themselves, true . . . The crueities and obstacles of this swiftly Changing planet will not yield to outworn slogans. They cannot be moved by those who cling to a present that is already dying, who prefer the illusion of security to the excitement and danger that comes with even the most peaceful progress. It is a revolutionary world we live in; and this generation at home and around the world, has had thrust upon it a greater burden of responsibility than any generation that has ever lived. - Robert Francis Kennedy To those in whom we found truth And who have told it to a men in all times In their art or in their living, And chiefly to Christ, Sophocles, Einstein, Shakespeare . . . TRUTH IN ART And to Robert Frost, Mendel, Chau- cer, St. Paul, Descartes, Thomas Jef- ferson, George Bernard Shaw, Boris Pasternak, VanGogh, Tom Dooley, Pythagoras, John XXIII, and t0 Mi- changelo for his Pieta and David , .. To All Who Died In The Joy Of Their Strength And To All Who Resolved To Grow In Trueness To Their Ideals And Not In Violence ---A t z . w. x o H Ly ya $44393 ..'. :3 III M To those who during our high school years Loved Life and embodied an inSpiration, And who lived and spoke eloquently for the truth Of a society more just, But who died in violence suddenly, T0 Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King, lr., To all who died in the joy of their strength And to all who resolved to grow in trueness to their ideals And not in hatred or in violence I ,. The Example Of What Can Be Done FAITH IN IDEALISM Our trust in the integrity of human commitments is confirmed in men of greatness . . . 13 To those living who in their accomplishments have given or are giving us an example of what can be done with our tal- ents, who in their dedication confirm our faith in idealism and our trust in the integrity of human commit- ments, and eSpecially to Dr. Christian Barnard, James A. McDivitt, to Yev- geny Yevtushenko, Father Theodore Hesburgh, and to Senators Mark Hatfield and Edmund Muskie for ins- isting on perspective, logical frankness, and precisioned clearness in facing the political problems of our decade i . . To those who brought us to our present maturity, Who demanded excellence for our education and integrity in our personal growth, To our parents, our pastors, to our relatives and friends, To our bishop, His Grace Karl Alter . .. And in gratitude to God our Father, who created us to perfect us, and who blest our studies, our discussions and classes, homecoming, our exams and rallies, A Patch of Blue, our senior retreats with their strengths and weaknesses, the tur- key raffle, the meets and games . .. Who blest our district championship in basketball, our consistent or irregular interest in learning, our art work and certificates, our graduation e grateful, and with the trust that He leads us to truth. 15 SENIORS MIKEABAR Chemistry Club 3,4; Math Club 4; Physics Club 4; Bowling 2,3,4; Intramurals, PETE ANDRES Cavalier of the Month; Cheerleader 4; Fraction 1,2; Interracial Council 2,3; Photography Club 1,2; Plume Staff 1,2,3,4; Student Council 2; Chrrn. of Intramural Committee 4; Variety Show 2; Yearbook Staff 3,4; Athletic Statistician 2,3; Bowling 3. Varsity Football The 1968-69 Big Red Football team, under new head coach Paul Gronefeld, started off with a show of great talent. In scrimmages the team destroyed Aiken, With- row and Indian Hill. But before the first game the inju- ry bug bit deepiy into the starting line-up. Despite this handicap, the Fighting Cavaliers went on to tally a 6-4 slate - the best since 1962. Against Dayton Carroll, the Big Red fought back from a 0-10 first quarter deficit to an 18-10 victory. Against Courter Tech, leading 40-0 with 21 minutes left, substitutes were used to prevent a monstrous score. In Andy Hazley, Joe Booker and Tom Forte lead the way on a halfback sweep against Moeiler. the LaSalIe game, Paul Smith, Jim Burbridge and Joe Booker led the way to a 28-6 GCL victory. The team showed the same power in victories over Newport Catholic i14-Oi and McNicholas i28-101. In the final game of the season Purcell, out to avenge the '67 loss to Eider, put together a fine display of teamwork for a 12-6 victory. Those receiving AII-Star honors were Joe Booker, Ray Lamping, George Reid, Joe EEIison, Ted Bevis, Frank Shands, Bill Schmidt, Mike Reiners, Steve Harris, Andrew Hazley, Tim Tighe and Jim Burbridget ., i t ' -. - 5 u? i M n ' . Varsity Basketball Purcell showed their outstanding spirit and quality in the 1969 Varsity Basketball season. For the first time since the beginning of Purcell, the Cavaliers won the District Championship by nipping LaSalle 54-49. Mr. Connors called it his biggest and the team's best achievement of the year. Moving on to the Regionals at Cincinnati Gardens, the Big Six ran Hamilton Garfield off the floor in the first game, but turned around in the second and lost to Dayton Chaminade in a heartbreaker. Another accomplishment of the team was winning the G.C.L. for the first time since 1960. In doing this the varsity squad took St. X 73-65, thus making it the first time we beat an X varsity team in basketball and football since 1960. Coach Connors said, We did ev- erything right. The boys were superb. The height and ability of Dickey, the spectacular moves of Luke, the rebounding strength of Robinson and Booker, and the playmaking and fastbteaking of Hazley and Burbridge - all combined to give Purcell the greatest team in its history. 81 Championship Coaches Connor and Leurk. The coaching job of Mr. Connors and Mr. Leurck was truly phenomenal. They put in hours upon hours of theirtime to return Purcell's championship pride. Yes, Purcell was magnificent in '69 Varsity Basket- ball. The most obvious reason for the team's success is the playing ability of Derrek Dickey. In recognition of his outstanding ability, Derrek was one of the 100 ath- letes receiving the title and award of All American in 1969. The men on the team have a great deal to be proud of, which in turn gave the seniors and gnder- classmen something to be proud of also. PURCELL NO. 1. ti :1. m, s ,,.. , 'A . Cool hand Luke. Even with the loss of five seniors, Scott Mer- curio and Eduardo Neyra iCo-Captainsl, Pete Czekalski, Paul Strasser and John Sheehan, there will still be a good number of promising underclassmen to fill the gaps. Fogwell, directorof the Concert Chorust The 1968-69 Concert Chorus had a most active schedule this season, both at the Castle and on concert tours. Under their director, Mr. Barry L. Fogwell, the men of Purcell's glee club began preparing for their many engagements well before school officially opened in the fall. During the academic year, rehears- als were held daily from 7:45 A.M. until homeroom pe- riod. The first concert was a guest appearance before the girls at the Sacred Heart Academy in Clifton on October 24. Then, on November 27, the Choristers went on the road again to do a pair of guest concerts e the Summit in the morning, Marian High School in the afternoon. Michael Vitale, student president of the organization, acted as M.C. on these tours. All the au- diences received the group with warm enthusiasm. Highlights of the tour programs included such num- bers as HA Whale of a Tale, Onward Christian Sol- diers, and Moon River. A barbershop quartet made up of se- niors Fritz Kahsar and Larry Greis, junior Bill Geiger, and freshman Terry Loftus performed Sounds of Si- lence in the Variety Show in March. Tom Sylvester, librarian and incumbent secretary of the chorus, also performed in the V5 with a moving rendition of Abra- ham, Martin and Johni'. On March 16th, the full Chorus was the Summit girls' guest in their spring concert. Fa- ther Ken Schoettmer was substitute director in Mr. Fogwell's absence at this concert, thereby becoming chaplain emeritus of the glee club. Father Schoett- mer was also instrumental in the selection of some of the fine music performed by the chorus this year. The most outstanding event in choral music this year was the Music-Art Festival, held in Purcell's auditorium on April 27th The program included a performance by the octet of The Apple and the Worm , a tenor solo 0f Schubert's Ave Maria by Terry Loftus, and Battle Hymn of the Republic for full chorus and band. One result of this fine concert was a request for a stereo- taping of the choral sector by the producer of the Bob Braun SOFSO Club. The tape was cut and sent to WLW-T on May 5th, along with a photograph of the glee club. Excerpts from the same concert were repeated on May 4th at Sacred Heart Academy. On May 25th the chorus sang High Mass at Assump- tion Church to celebrate Pentecost and Fr. Schoett- mer's first anniversary as a priest. The season's activities concluded with the Baccalaureate Mass on June 1st at St. Francis de Sales. The annual banquet was held on Sunday, May 31st at Coney island, at which time awards to all deserving members were distributed and the day was spent in well-earned celebration.
