The face ofchange is a young one 7 and it comes in many coiors. All previous revolutions had. as their goal. the attainment of some new state of equilibrium. What we are seeing in our time is a new order of revolution, whose goal is not a new equilibrium, but social disorder itself. It is the first social recognition that continuous change itself is a form of equilibrium and that it is only in disorder that we find order.

This world of ours is new world, in which the unity of knowledge the nature of human communities. the order of society, the order of ideas, the very notions of society and culture have Changed. and will not return to what they have been in the past, What is new is new not because it has never been there before. but because it has changed in quality , One thing that i5 new is the prevalence of newness. the changing scale and scope of change itself. Our period demands a type of man who can restore the lost equilibrium between in ner and outer reality. This equilibrium. never static, but like reality itself. involved in continuous change, is Iikethat of a tightrope dancer who, by small adjustments, keeps a continuous balance between his being and empty space. We need a type of man who can control his own existence by the process of balancing forces often regarded as irreconcilable; man in equipoise, Siegfried Giedion
