The band played many new and inter? esting numbers at the footbali games. the Fall Concert. and the Fine Arts Festivale Wally Kuebler, Jerry Shoemaker, Bob Herring. and John Szaz all enjoyed h'ne accomplishments as the officers of the band. They devoted many long hours of practice and hard work preparing for the events a Purceli which called for a good band and Mr Dowd and his band were always ready to play. A weil noted qualin has been seen and heard in the performe ances of the band which has made the rest of the students very proud ofthelr band. Cheerleaders The cheerleaders had a fot of fun this year even though PurceH did not always Wm. but they were always out there yeJling and cheering the Cavaliers 0n. A Human Rosary was formed by the homeroom representatives and the various members of the councilt and the praying was led by them. Fr. Knuge presided and said the Benediction and the en? tire crowd shared in the ecumenical spirit of the occasion. The Council hopes that plans are made to Improve the quality of the event in the future to allow more people to share in this worth while project. Rallies For Football and BasketbaH Ralhes this year quality instead of quantity was the keynote. Footbait Rallies were held before the Hamilton Badin, St. Xavier, LaSalle, and Elder games and there was 3 Basketball Rally before the crucial Elder game which the Cavaliers won to put them in 1st place in city competition. The St. X. Football Rally was the best raHy, with the unusual signs and superb skit 0n the Batman craze written and performed by Purcell students. The wild and cotortul signs were the most striking features at the Rallies and they showed the creatiwty and goodisense on the part of the students. Rallies this year dehnitely were an aid to the performances of the Athletes and It is hoped that more of equal quality will come about next yeart Students whoop 1t up at Elder Rally ' 1 r. Frank Gate, the students-of Purceil had their own Homecoming at the Roger Bacon Game at Lockland Stadium. The affair was completely organized and paid for by the students. The Homcoming itsetf consisted of a parade of several cars containing the Queens and their escorts. The Queen was Denise Bernens 0f Ursula; her attendants were Tetw ry Maley and Mary Ellen 0on of Marian. Sally Grunkmeyer of Ursula, Regina Moss and Glori Cattelan of Regma. The event turned out to be quite a success. despite the fact that Bacon won the Football game. Days of Recollection 3 Instead of the conventional underclassmen retreat of previous years, 1967 instituted a few Days of Recollection at different times in the school year to enable the students to take a day off from school to deliberate on life and the individual as a person in modern society. The Days of Recollection. headed by Bro, Torn Schoer and Bro. Jerry Glassmeyer. from various after- comments of students was a success. The students seemed to Irke the new style of informal retreat much better than the old style and the event allowed many students to find out more about their selves and fellow students The students were placed in fairfy small groups to discuss and analyze modern music and its effect and meaning for contemporary man This allowed students to realize the everyday practical applications which this music can have if listened to attentivefy, After this the students viewed the movie Phoebe followed by a group of the movie and its applicatrons on them. The real success of the days was due to the fact that the students were able to break down into smaller groups and thus more attention was given to more people. Everyone enjoyed the days and were able to im- prove themselves as Individuals in society. 39 Students dISCUSS the Importance of modern man. -e wwmtw FrOSh Field Day Late this yeat at of Brother Glassmeyer's Biology classes went on a held trip to one of the Cincinnati Parks. All the freshman seemingly had a very good time with also learning something about nature and outSIde life. Many of the freshman agree to in the future to go on more field trips to make their years at Purcell more successful. Brother Glassmeyer atso said that is undesa cribed value infield trips as far as the education and advanced learning In the held of Biology. The only other organization that has won more awards is the Debate team. Jay Smith and his staff has done a great job in making the Plume one of the five best high school magazines in the United States. Outstanding Plume writers and photographers have won nearly 20 awards during the school yeari Some of the Plumei awards consist of the National Scho- IaSIIC Press Association. AIl-American; Catholic School Press Association, All-Catholic; Columbia Scholastic Press Associa tion, First Class, This is a very great accomplishment for the Plume which has been always consistently winning smaller awards A great deal of credit is due to .Jay Smith and all the other members and edi- tors of the staff. The Plume tries to write objectively about everything that happens at the Castle Jay Smith has succeeded very well in doing this as the Plume has received all these awards and will continue to do so under the new editorship of Roger Mezger. Roger plans to continue the policy that Jay has started and we hope that the Plume will win as many awards as the past year. Special awards have also been awarded to Jay Smith and many of the other individual writers and editors Of the Plume. Tim Smith won a Certificate of Achievement for his photography entry. Roger Mezger's Special Citation was for feature writing. Jay Smith and Rick Ellerhorst won Certificates of Merit for news writing, Bill Kerwin for verse, Jim Eichenbetger and Brian Miller for art work, and Bill Hoctor and Tom Reilage for their photogra- phy. m. um m- mew Third Row: Mxke Wexman, ALben Tomasx, Mike Halhum Bob WMliamson, Doug Mayer, John Txghe. Healey This year's Student Council led by President Tim Evans, Vice- President Tim Sheeran, Secretary Joe Wilmers, and Treasurer Brad Jones, did have its problems though 1967 can be termed a successful year for them. Despite the defeat of the school constitutions and the exam exemptions proposal. the accom- plishments were many. The real success of the counCII was in the dances which brought big name bands and good crowds to the Castle. The Internal Improvements Committee putthe school into shape by completing various odd jobs around the school and campus, Headed by Michael Hall this committee painted the fence and repainted the Cavalier podium along with cleaning the balcony above the front entrance of the schools The expansion of the Intramural program was also supported by this year's counCtl. The council bought Intramural tee shirts so as to distinguish the different homerooms. The counml tried to improve the studentefaculty relationship in Fresh From front to back. MY Bennett, J, Hurd, D. Melners, T Eichenberger. and out of the classroom this year and slight gains were made in this area. As the present members of the Council leave for their college and business world, a new breed of men replace the old. Mike McKernanl the new President, has many ideas and knowledge that improvement can be made With determina- tion and support by the Administration, Faculty, and the entlre Student body. Mike is backed up by Chip Zoller, Vice-Presidenty Fred Geraci and Tom Bove. who all together Will tryto make Purcell the leading school in the city and the state. This year's council was under the direction of Fr. Williams was one of the most successful counCIl's ever organized at Purcell ever since the sophomore year when leaders of the sophomore class started the sophomore council which tried to keep the Student CouncH on the ball. ThlS is why the Student Council at Purcell in 1967 was such a great success. J Jackson, J. Mueller. D. Wetzel, D Garmon, B Wirth, N. Schuckman, Basketballs Most Valuable Player. The Debate Team has in three short years under the able leadership of Brother John Pier come from just a medicare team to Ohio State Champions The team has traveled about 7,600 miles and have competed in tourneys in six states against students from TOFIV'EIghl states around the country. The State wih enabled the team to travel to Atlantic City for the Catholic National Finals and Neshwlle, Tennessee for the National Forensic League Na? tional Finale. Also over these three short years the team has won over 7504: of all their debates which is a very impresswe record for anyone or thing. Many ofthe boys on the team have been gotng to summer school at various college's over the country Some OT these schools are Ohio University, Northern Michigan. Akron. and Georgetown University, and all of the tuttion has been paid ei- ther by private donation or college scholarship for the summer In Speech Tom Witte just missed qualifying for the National Tourney for the ForenSic League by hnishing second in the Nae tional Forensic League Regionals. The freshmen were a big surprise to Brother Pleft They went out The Purcell State Championship Team .. 54- and won the hrst tourney of their career. They continued to do this all through the year and the first and second place medals came rolling in. Among the Debaters. Brian Reagan was elected the 80061! Di- rector Which was some sort of joke Brother Pier is very proud of his team and he sees no reason why they should not lair well in the National TOLtrneys. BLll there is one thing that he does regret and that is the problem of next years team Brother Pier lS gothg to St. LOUIS to further himself and become a priest ih the Mariahst Order This poses a probe Iem for the young team of replacing him with someone that has the expetience and the talent to take Brother's place, Brother Pier regrets leaving the Castle and his team, but he feels God is more important and you know. he is? The President of the Debate Team is SeniOt Tim Sheeian and the ViceePreSident Is Steve Rehling, a Junior The Yearbook wishes the Debate Team all the luck they need to win the Na, tional Finals and we hope that Brother Pier Will emoy many more years of this continued success where ever he goes. . VX5157 Dances at Purcell Improve There were many dances held at Purcell this year and they all were successful in their intentions Very many big name bands visited Purcell and performed for the swinging dancers. Bands such as the Us Too Group, The Lemonpipers. lvan and the Sae bres, the Chosen Lot, the Long Island Sound, The New Lime. the Eleventh Tomorrow, and the Orange Noise, This list could go on and on but the point was made. there were a lot of real swinging bands at the Castle. Student COUHClI sponsored many, if not all of the dances and they plan to continue this by setting up dances this summer for the purpose of ratsrng more money for the budget of the Court? Cil. If this goes through, look for a lot more of these big name bands to be present at Purcell There are also many students at Purcell that are members of different bands and have already played at Purcell, Such bands as the Patriots, Salvation and His Army, the Kort Tikis, and the Radical 4761. 59 Concert ChorusTBetter Than Ever!! Title The Reserve football team finished the 1966 season with anA other perfect record, giving their coaches Mr. Pat Higgins and Mr. George Ecker seventeen consecutive wins and two G.CtL. championships. This impressive record is due mainly to their outstanding defense as this years reserve squad scored a total of 116 points, while limiting their opponents to 18. In their first game the Sophomores pulled out a victory as Paul Smith scored the lone touchdown which. with extra points,he1d up for the 870 win. Next the reserves conquered Moeller with Smith tallying twice for a 14-0 win. The third victory came at the expense of Newport Catholic as the mighty reserves romped to a 200 win, with scores coming on touchdown pass- es to Tim Tighe. Jim Burbridge, and Joe Booker. Covington Catholic was next victimized in a game that saw only one score, the result of a Smith to Froelich pass, as the Sophs squeaked by with a 6-0 edge In the Elder game it was all Purcell as the Fie- serves marched to a 28-0 win with tallies resulting from three passes to Burbridge, and a run by Joe Kelsch, In the hardest fought game of the season, a loss to St, Xavier was adverted by the game saving tackle of Tom Forte with the assistance of Bur- bridge near the goal line. The reserves won this contest by the narrow margin of 12-6. By defeating La Saile the Sophs clinched a tie for the G.C.L. crown as the scoring came from runs by Smith and Kelsch. Finishing the season. the reserves captured the title by defeating McNicholas 1476 in a game with touchdown runs by Booker and Tighe. Besides leading the reserve team for the year the following sophomores were elevated to the varsity to assist them in their remaining games: Tighe, Froelich, Middelberg, Lamping, Ree iners. and Booker. The Purcell 1966 crossecountry team had a very good season. just missing the adjective 'igreat , as they were nosed out in three big events. The varsity runners started out the seaSOn right with two easy wins over Moeller and Taft. In their first big meet ofthe year, Purcell placed a good sixth in the always tough Miami Invitational. An injury to a key runner hindered the team to a possible better than fourth in the Mt, Healthy Invita- tional. Next came the GCL meet and the Cavaliers most true trating performance. They finished second, losing to Elder by only one point. Jerry Hefele led the team as he placed second, this being one of the finest performances in recent years by any Purcell crossecountry runner in GCL. competition. In the Cincinnati districts, Purceil again finished a close second. this time being defeated by Oak Hills. However, this second place finish enabled the Cavaliers to compete iri the Regional Tournament, where they came in fourth, missing an opportunity to compete in the state finals as the first three places were the qualifying positions. Another excellent performance by Jerry Hefele enabled him to compete as an individual runner in the state meet. Besides Hefele. other consistent runners for the year were Mike Hathome, Paul Lynch, Mike Kelly. Brad Jones. Ron Murphy. The season was highlighted by a five game winning streak to open the campaign, In these five games Purcell won by a comfortable margin in three, came from behmd to beat Roger Bacon, and outlasted highlyerated Elder by two points, in a game that many Purcell fans will never forget. The team's first loss of the season was to Moeller by six points. This game was played before 1,126 people. an all-time record for a home game at Purceilt The Cavaliers in their next outing apparently shook off the Moeller loss, as they trounced St. Thomas by fourty-one points. However, a one point overtime defeat to McNichoias started a frustrating seven game losing streak for the varSIty basketballerst During this stretch, Purcell could do nothing right, as they were hindered by Injuries to key players. The team hnafiy ended the tailspin with a five paint win over McNiCholas. This was followed by an overtime ioss to St. Xawer, the Cavaliers giving the game away in the iast two min utes of regulation play. Victories over Loutswlle De Safes and Roger Bacon ended the regular season With Purcell at nine and nine. In the district tournament. Purcell downed Maderia, and then lost to a highly improved Courter Tech team by three points, Leading Purceli's scoring efforts for the year were Ward and Geraci. This achievement gave them recognition on the All G.C.L, team. At the winter sports banquet Ward received the MVP. award and Ball Hawk award Geraci was presented a trophy for leading the team in freeethrow percentage. Wiimersy who missed half of the season because of an injury, but who stayed on as a part time coach was given an outstanding ser- vrce award. But as the year progressed the squad sharpened to rack up a 14-4 wonelost record, the best reserve record in recent years, and a second place hnish in the rugged G.C,L, The main reason for the reserves successes hes in a weII-bal- anced attack At the outset of the season. Derreck Dickey, who was on his way to a starting position on the varsity, commande ed the b0ards.J1m Burbridge and Andrew Hazley did exception- ally good jobs at the guard pOSItions even though they were hampered by a tack of size These two players led the reserve team in scoring throughout the year. Joe Booker, Randy Froe- tich, and Dan Fischer composed the forward contingent, with Joe Helmes coming on strong to help hll the gap left by the absence of Dickey. Not to be forgotten is Dawd Like, who was elevated from the freshman team late in the year to help spark the reserve assault. Most valuable player award went to Jim Burbridge after a close balloting. Joe Booker received Most Improved Player award, as he was a starter at the end of the season. Taking all into consideration it was a great year for the reserve team and their coach Mr. Jim Cafferky. In two instances the Cavaliers had 3 games winning streaks but they were followed with 3 losses in a row. The biggest disappointment was the defense, which was being counted on to be one of the best in the City. The overall hitting was generaliy poor, as the team in only 3 games bunched their hits in one inning to win ballgames. The pitching staff led by Geraci and Donovan and assisted by Suliivan. Last year's team won the District Golf Championship and hopes were high that this feat could be repeated. The work of forming the team began in late March when tryouts were held. Mr. Del Conte was in his freshman year as golf coach, and this made it rather difficult as he knew the player's taient only from what he had heard. Soon though, he narrowed down his held of candidates to eight boys who would alternate? Iy compose the team. They were five seniors: Chris Wright. Bar- ry Grote. Bob Grundgoefer. Mike Ragiand. Jim Robers and three sophomores. Wiesenhahn, Phillips. and Brennen. When the team began playing matches the lineup was con stantiy being shifted in an effort to find a winning combination. As things turned out every member of the team figured in an important win one time or another The only player who cone stantly remained in the Iine-up was Chris Wright, the most valu- able golfer. Chris' effort often carried the team and he seldom bet his point in a match Because of rainvouts. the time OfIhe Districts arrived before the regular season matches were finished. Mr. Del Come decided on four seniors whom he felt had the talent and experience needed to do the best in the districts. Wright played first man Robers second. Ragland third. and Grote fourth. When the totals came in Purcell was sixth out ofthe 27 teams competing. It was not a bad ranking but their hopes of winning it for Coach Del Conte were missed, The season ended three days later on a very convincing note, as the Cavalier Iinksmen defeated St. Xavier and MoeHer in a trian- gular match as Purcell finished in a second place tie in the GCL At the spring sports banquet Chris Wright was presented the Most Valuable Golfer award and AI Wiesenhahn earned the Most Promising Golfer award. 122 Varsity Golf McNicholas Elder Mariemont Woodward Roger Bacon Newport Cathoiic Withrow Greenhills La SaIIe Withrow Moeller Stv xevier Won 6 Lost 6 G. Awards at the ceremonies went to many members of the Class of 1967, Indi- vidual Awards went to Tim Donovan. Tim Sheeran, Jim Eichenburger. Jim Frey, Commencement Held at Music Hall There was excitement in the air as the Class of 1967 took part in their commencement exercises. At 8 o'clock that evening. last minute preparations were being taken care of: fixing the tassel, adjusting the cap. and straightening the gown. At pre- cisely 8:15 the long, last march begani 211 young men filed down the aisles in near to perfect unison. A sense of together- ness filled the heart of each Senior as they proudly sang outthe Star Spangled Banner . The four years have gone and now only the future lies ahead. The graduates have been victorous in their first of many great battles of life. They are filled with happi- ness for a moment, yet he is a little regretful. The good times they have experienced at Purcell are over, and the memory of these cherished moments will not be soon forgotten. They leave behind many friends in order to find new friends in the fields which they pursue. And so as they walk up the aisle for the last time; they sense accomplishment; regret; and gratitude to their parents. teachers. friends, and most of all God.
