16, 1928 Purcell High School was dedicated. lt had been built the young men of the diocese could receive an education that would them not only citizens of America, but children of God. lohn T. McNicholas, speaking on Catholic Education at the dedica- said, lt is to train our children that they will acquire the habit a supernatural motive for every thought and Word and action of their Archbishop McNicholas had seen the need for several new high schools. became one of these foundations, being named as a memorial to that of the Catholic Church in young America, Archbishop Iohn B. Purcell. The architects, Crowe and Schulte, used the Romanesque style of architecture in this three story building. The exterior Was built of brick with stone trim- mings. Only- the most modern equipment was installed in the 56001100 struc- ture. Upon completion, it immediately took its place among the most beautiful educational institutions serving the community. The school was put in charge of the priests of the diocese and the Brothers of Mary, who have schools located all over the world. This faculty has done a noble job in preparing young men for the battle which faces them at gradua- tion, the never-ending battle for sanctity. . The twenty-five years have been a road of constant improvement. These im- provements have enabled Purcell to move ahead constantly in the fields of spiritual, cultural, intellectual and physical education. The benefits of Purcell are seen in the graduates, both in their work for the community and in their devotion to God. Alter, Archbishop of Cine cirmati. Archbishop Alter was born in Toledo, Ohio on August 18, 1885. After receiving his education at the Univer- sity of Toledo and St. Iohn University, he was ordained on Iune 4, 1910. Arch- bishop Alter was appointed head of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati after the death ot Archbishop lohn T, McNichof las in l95U, Since his ordination in ltllfl, l-lis Excellency has been an active inein- ber in all fields ot weltare activities, Last year on November lfl, Archbishop Alter was appointed chairman ot the administrative board ot the National Catholic Welfare Conference.
