H. S. is open to all students from the freshman to the senior year and aids many seniors with their future plans. The students are given opportunities to read about current events through the excellent supply of magazines in our school library. The students also make use of non-fiction books for reference and fictional books and biographies for book reports. One of the local banks was the host for these business students. The banks are but one of the many local establish- ments that open their doors to P. H. S.'s business students so they may have a chance to witness real business transac- tions in action. Ever since he began teaching at P. H. S. in l927, Mr. Sherk has shown a great interest in his students. As head of our Science Department and founder of our Science Club, he has guided many students toward scholarships and careers in science. Mr. Sherk got his BA degree from Lebanon Valley Col- lege, at Annville, Pa. where he demonstrated his athletic ability on the track team and his vocal ability in the Kolo- zotian Men's Chorus. ln his spare time Mr. Sherk enjoys reading and garden- ing as well as attending football and baseball games. Mr. Sherk's expert guidance and advice have helped his students rank among the best. His friendly manner and enthusiasm have won him the respect and admiration of all his students. For these and many other reasons, we dedicate the l959 Mirror to Mr. Herman Sherk. l 4 N-Q fm: N-...ff James T. Downie, Superintendent Glenn M. Evening performances for the Public were held November 20, and 21. The show was directed by John Fletcher and Beverly Reed. The helpful and able faculty advisor was Mr. Carl Van Dyke. Various television programs were tuned in during the two hour show. The Nelsons, featuring Rickey and American Bandstand with Dick Clark thrilled the rock and roll enthusiasts. Mid- western Hayride supplied square dancing and western music. The Bob Cummings Show in which the hula hoop was intro- duced, and a boisterous boxing match kept the audience amused. The Steve Allen Show, comprised of dancing, singing, and a boys hula highlighted the evening's enter- tainment. The curtains closed as the Seniors sang Now ls The Hour. Under the excellent training of Miss Esther Jane Davis, the 46 members met twice a week to learn new songs and to practice old familiar songs. Our choir and other musical groups presented the school with their annual inspiring Christmas program. They gave a spring concert, which included all types of music. Other musical groups are the girls' chorus, boys' chorus, girls' sextette, boys' ensemble and girls' ensemble. Together these groups and the choir presented Punxsutawney High School and surrounding area with a success- ful and entertaining year of music. GIRLS CHORUS MUSIC J 'this fl naw P The shrill at the whistle and the rolling of the drum signals another appearance of the smart red and white clad P. H. S. marching band. The drills and smart maneuvers were the eagerly awaited half-time features at the football games. This year the bond took part in Penn State's annual Band Day Ceremonies. The band's neat and snappy appearances brought good comments from the many spectators. The band participated in Halloween parades, Labor Day parades and various community parades. The students were entertained by the Pep Band in many assembly programs. The band mem- bers attended county, district, and state band. Money raising projects included selling ball point pens and refreshments at all football and basketball games. ln cooperation with the cheerleaders, the band has contributed several snappy tunes to our collection of cheers. Through the endeavors this year's band has made us more aware of its spirit and tradition of our school. BAND First row, Left to right: M. J. McQuown, N. Pifer, S. N1Vood, K, Evans, J. McQuown, M. J. STUDENT COUNCIL Student Council, our voice in the operation of the school, is guided by the able presi- dent, Jean Gotwald. Miss Pringle and Mr. Smith, faculty advisors, are a great asset to the Council. This year for the first time every junior high grade is represented. Jean Gotwald, Polly Gene Curry, and Miss Pringle, attended the state convention last fall in New Kensington. A Christmas tree placed in the Jackson Building was trimmed by the coun- cil members with decorations made by the homerooms. The first dance, one of the three spon- sored by the council each year, was an overwhelming success. A dance contest was one of the exciting events of the evening. Student Council is now working on a Foreign Exchange project. All indications point to our having an exchange student next year. Officers President .,,.. ...... . . A group of members of P.H.S., known as the Mirror Board, was in charge of producing our yearbook. The members were chosen by the staff of the previous year. Skill in English was a major consideration in this choice. There are four sophomores, three juniors, and eleven seniors on the present staff. Each year the board's graduating seniors choose future co-edi- tors to head the staff. This year they are Edward Rager and Wanaamarie Davis. Miss Miriam Cokely is the capable leader ofthe group. Our photographer is Mr. William Rose and Mr. Thomas Wilson advises us businesswise. The Mirror Board is in complete charge of picture ideas, all copy and write-ups, and the style and color of the cover. The only exception is the dedication. The senior class chooses to whom the Mirror should be dedicated. The board aims to please by rearranging senior pictures so that they are larger, by larger underclass pictures, by the livelier copy, and by the most complete pictorial coverage imagin- able. With high hopes and grim determination the Punxsy Chucks opened the l958 season with a l5-O victory over the Laura Lamar eleven. How- ever, because of injuries and an ineffective ground attack the Chucks lost six consecutive games. The Clearfield game proved to be the most exciting contest of the season. With four minutes remaining and the score l3-7 the Chucks 'started a 99 yard drive only to be stranded on their own two yard line when time ran out. The outstanding game was the traditional Armistice Day battle be- tween the Old rivals, Punxsy and DuBois. The Chucks started with an opening play touchdown to top the Beavers 2l-7. This decisive victory made up for all losses. Despite a poor season the Punxsy Chucks had five gridders on the All District Teams. P.H.S. was well represented with Ralph Kunselman on the first team, Don Reed, Tim Conners, and Ron l-letrick on the second team, and Paul Kellor with honorable mention. 83 SM fi' M fl A L OFC! However, the Dalymen continued to defend their District IX title successfully by remaining undefeated in league com- petiticn with seven straight wins. Bradford handed Punx'y its first league setback of the sea- son. DuBois which all but shattered the Chucks' dreams of another league title. Coach Da'y's Chucks ended the season with a very respectable I7 and 5 record. This determined squad and their excellent Coach, Charles Daly, amassed one of the fin- est records in P.H.S. basketball history. Here is a brief account of the more exciting games the Chucks played this season. Marion Center - The Chucks gave the Punx'y Fans an example of what to expect in fu- ture games. Their rebounding and speed contributed to their victory. Bradford - Punx'y had to use an overtime period to down the determined Owls 33-3l on their home court. DuBois - Attracting the largest crowd ever to witness a Punx'y home game, Chuck Daly's starting five came through with a 40-37 victory over previously unbeaten DuBois, their closest rival. Altoona - Facing a team who was last year's state runner-up team and a candidate for this year's state championship, the Dalymen had a near upset in the making, but lost in the final l5 seconds, 43-4l.
