The aims of the Service Club are to promote citizen- ship and courtesy in the school and community, and to aid organizations in Andover and surrounding com- munities. Our Student Service Committee conducted several rallies, sent flowers to students who had lost members of their families, and sent cards to teachers and stu- dents who were absent because of illness. Also, mem- bers of the Service Club adopted a junior high girl confined to the hospital with polio. Visits were made to the hospital, and cards and letters were sent. Our School Service Committee provided messengers for the clinic, assisted in the preparation and distribu- tion of polio pamphlets, and prepared a scrapbook for our little sister . The main project of our Production Committee was the repairing of clothes and toys for North Reading Sanitorium and for flood victims in Western Massachusetts. The members of the Community Service Committee went to Lawrence during Christmas to represent An- dover at the Nativity Scene. Many members braved the freezing weather to take part in the carol singing. This committee also conducted Valentine parties at St. Ann ' s Orphanage, North Reading Sanitorium, and Tewksbury State Hospital. One of our biggest thrills this year was the receiving of a Citation for our work. This award was the result of a job well done by the Service Club under the won- derful leadership of Dorothy Jenkins and her com- mittee last year. We hope that the Punchard Service Club will con- tinue to carry on its program; and that future mem- bers will realize the importance of service to others . B. Brookover, and G. Durant receiving a Cita- tion and two volumes of Life in America. THE LIBRARY CLUB The Library Club was chartered by the Student Council this year. Its membership consists of library as- sistants working under the supervi- sion of Miss Muriel Shaw, librarian. The club ' s purpose is to encourage reading among the students and to arrange displays of interest to the students. During the year we visited the high school libraries of Haver- hill, Stoneham, and Reading in order to discover new and better ways to improve our own library. THE CAMERA CLUB The camera club, under the su- pervision of Mr. Danforth has en- joyed its second year at P.H.S. Each Wednesday during the sixth period, a group of avid photography en- thusiasts gathered in the science lec- ture room to hear various reports, witness special projects, and partici- pate in discussions on subjects per- tinent to photography. After school and during free periods, the club darkroom offered excellent oppor- tunities to perfect methods or ex- periment with printing and devel- oping techniques. Several group ac- tivities were planned and the club had a very successful year. Left to right (3rd row) : R. Young; R. Arabian; R. Jordan; W. Russell; A. Doty. (2nd row) : Advisor, G. A. The council conducts all elections and attempts to solve many of the problems which arise at school. During this past year, the council has sold book covers, planned assemblies, and organized Student Council Week . This included two assemblies, Tag Day, a Dime Dance, and a Friday night dance. VARSITY CLUB The Varsity Club was established in 1943 chiefly to further good sportsmanship among all athletes. In or- der to be a member of the Varsity Club, a boy must have earned a letter in a varsity sport, and a girl must have earned a letter in cheering or must have met certain qualifications through the gym class point system. Every year this club gives an award to a student who has made outstanding contributions to his school by taking an active part in the social life of the school, in sports, and in the classroom. This year the Varsity Club sponsored the Donkey Basketball Game in which the varsity team was de- feated by the faculty. The proceeds from this game have been set aside as a scholarship fund. The Varsity Club is proud of its achievements this year and hopes that future clubs will continue to con- tribute to the school in this same manner. Left to right (3rd row) : T. Andrews; R. Janes; L. BOYS ' BASKETBALL This year, against all kinds of opposition, Punchard won enough games to be invited to the Tech Tourney for the tenth consecutive year, which set a new state record. The only flaw in the campaign of the season was the two victories of Methuen over our Blue Devils. During the season, our team showed the ability so com- mon to Punchard ' s squads since Ken McKiniry became coach. With the experience of many of last year ' s squad members and also with the spark and vitality of new players such as Dick Smith, Punchard completed another successful season. Sonny Thomson, Bill Bolia, and Jim Holt are outstanding members of the team. Sonny is State Class D javelin throwing cham- pion. Bill Bolia has developed into an outstanding mid- dle distance runner. Jim Holt has become a good jumper and hurdle man. These and others comprise Punchard ' s bid for a good track season. s p R I N G Left to right (Standmg) : R. Mclntyre, coach; A. Damon, J. Davis; T. This year, the Blue Devils tromped down almost ail opposition to emerge victorious with but one defeat to mar a near perfect record. An unlucky break cost them the game against Reading. By combining a fast backfield with a strong front line, the Blue Devils could not be beaten. This was coach Mclntyre ' s best season. In the backfield were Dick Smith, Bill Vickers, our passer, Ed Dwyer, always dependable, and finally, Alex Thomson, to help when the going got rough. In the front line were Co-Captains Larry Lynch and Bill Fisher with Tom Andrew, George Durant, Dick Janes, Jack Davis, and Cliff Sharpe. This unbeatable combination waded through an army of opposition to come forth with one of Punchard ' s best seasons in years. CHEERLEADERS The Punchard High School spirit, which in the past several years has seemed to slacken, has been heightened considerably in 1955 and 1956 through the fruitful efforts of the above group of cheerleaders. The cheerleaders, at the suggestion of the Service Club, and with the help of other school organizations, staged a number of pep rallies, all of which were very successful. Blue and Gold Week was another spirit booster ; a plan which won great favor with the en- tire student body. During this week, both students and teachers were appropriately attired in school colors. The standards of loyalty set by these cheerleaders, and the spirit displayed by them, should be the goal of every future Punchard squad. J DOWN ON PUNCHARD ' S RESERVATION I Left to right: R. The objective of the girls ' team is to promote better sportsmanship whether losing or winning. The team would like to thank Marie Burton and Gail Marland for the excellent job that they did for us during the past season. JUNIOR CLASS By Lynne Cotter In September of 1954, our class entered Punchard High School as bewildered sophomores. We assumed the responsibility of self-government by electing class officers during the previous spring. They were as follows: President, Barry Benson; Vice-President, Bucky Dalton; Secretary, Jane Hall; Treasurer, Billy McCullom; and Social Committee Chairman, Betsy Gilcreast. In January, we held our first dance. Under a very capable com- mittee, this proved to be our first successful venture. In April, fresh flowers adorned the gym as we prepared for our second dance. At the end of this year, we again elected officers for our junior year. They were the following: President, Barry Benson; Vice- President, Billy McCollom; Secretary, Lynne Cotter; Treasurer, Ralph Buschmann; and Social Committee Chairman, Betsy Gil- creast. Our class projects as juniors have been a dance and a fudge sale. With plans for another dance and our prom, we the class of 1957, look forward to highly successful junior and senior years. Gilcreast OFFICERS President James Clegg Vice-President Priscilla Reynolds Secretary Barbara Curran Treasurer David McAnern Social Chairman Edith Leidich SOPHOMORE CLASS By Barbara Curran This, our first year at Punchard, has been most pleasurable and constructive under the leadership of the class officers and faculty advisor, Mr. Mclntyre. We decided to build our treasury with four dollars per year as class dues. One of our many money-making projects was the selling of candy and coke at basket- ball games. This project was under the co-chairmanship of Priscilla Alden and Pat Golden, who received much class co-operation during this drive. This activity proved to be enjoy- able and profitable. Our bakery sales were held under the joint chairmanship of Mary McCafferty, Betty Ann Luminello, Priscilla Terrio, and Shirley Brown. They were held on Saturday, January 14th, at Cole ' s Hardware Store in Andover, the Shawsheen Lunchette, and Pete ' s Variety 66 Store in Lawrence. So much help was given at this sale, that we were in each other ' s way! By the way, it was recognized as the most rewarding bakery sale in many years. On January 17th, we had a bottle drive under the co-chairmanship of Helen Ellis and Doug Anderson. We had few hard workers on this drive. Little profit resulted because of the lack of cars and interest, but we learned much by our experience. At present, we have an enthusiastic committee under the co-chairmanship of Ruth Neisser and Glenn Williams, working for our paper drive which is to be held March 31. Our prospects are very good. Plans have been made for our first class dance which is to be held on March 23, under the co-chairmanship of Edie Leidich and Sara Clift. Stan Richards from WORL in Boston will be the disc-jockey; it promises to be one of the highlights of the social calendar. The final class activity is a dance which will be held on May 18th. No plans have been made to date. Thus, the class of 1958 has had many successful activities throughout the year to achieve class pride. Although these projects have taken much time, we have had a lot of fun. The fun of working together for class and school has made our first year in Punchard one to be remembered.
