Therefore, when the class of 1953 entered Pun- chard High School, a well set up and sound council was in existence. James Dolan and Shirley Murray re- tained membership on the council for three years. James acted as Vice-President of the Council in 1952 and President in 1953; Shirley, as Secretary in 1953. Joyce Mowat and Marjorie Retelle served for two years as Band and Cheerleader representatives, respectively. During the school year 1952-1953 an increased membership from our class represented the various organizations of the school. Those members were as follows: Alan Hughes, Elizabeth Hatton and Sally Seinwerth, Faculty representatives; Elinor Mondale, Honor Society representative; Randal Hurley, and Jack Lawrie, Track; Tony Sullivan and Eddie Doyle, Basketball; and Roger Barous and Jim Gemmell, Base- ball. The Council sponsored an assembly program, buses for the Tech Tourney game at a very reasonable price, and chartered the Dramatic Club, Radio Club, and the Honor Society. The graduating members feel that a strong council has been established for future classes. With the capa- ble guidance of Mr. Kellmurray, Faculty Advisor, and the interest and approval of Mr. Howe, the achieve- ments of the Council will be prominent and worthy. 42 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Louis Mirisola (Vice-President), Shirley Murray (Secretary), James Dolan (President), Sally Sein- werth ( Social Committee Chairman) , James Gemmell (Treasurer). Girls ' athletics have taken a turn for the better with a larger number of girls showing a keen interest. Due to the large Girls ' Band, there is no organized girls sports in the fall. As soon as the Thanksgiving vacation is over, Basketball starts out in full swing. This year, twenty-eight girls, of which thirteen were seniors, reported to make a good team with which Miss Collins worked. The sophomores and seniors had several good games in which both teams were quite evenly matched with the help of the juniors. Starring for the sopho- mores as well as the entire squad was the high-scoring forward, Marlene Bajak. Judy Hall, Anne Lord, Mari- lyn Nicoll, and Mary Belka gave tough opposition to seniors, Marion Glennie, Marcia Cotton, Mary Lord, Mary Ellen Bishop, Barbara Hall, and Janet Svenson. The team showed the dauntless Punchard spirit in its games by defeating Topsfield early in the season. Johnson managed to defeat the Punchard girls in their last game. The two games were enjoyed by all who attended, and the team hopes to have more games with outside competition in future years. The girls had a good voUey ball season with more than twenty girls reporting on Monday and Wednes- day afternoons. The seniors played the sophomores and juniors in many exciting games. Both teams had the wonderful teamwork which is necessary to give tough opposition to an opposing team. The prospects for softball look promising this year. With so many interested girls, there should be enough for a good large team. As yet no games have been scheduled, but there are hopes for a game with Abbot Academy. Last year saw Sandra Guertin, Mary Lord, and Janet Svenson become Varsity Club members by earning their P ' s . By spring more seniors will have earned their athletic letters. Several seniors have shown them- selves to be all-around athletes in their three years at Punchard. Ruth Morgan, Judith Nowell, Sandra Guer- tin, Mary Lord, and Janet Svenson have exhibited good sportsmanship in basketball, volley ball, and soft ball. 54 Standing: Ann Smith, Joyce Williams, Gail Thompson, Ann Sughrue, Eleanor Doucette, Vivian Marchese. Kneeling: Arlene Pariseau, Marjorie Retelle, Florence Golden. CHEERLEADERS During the past year, the cheerleaders have devoted a great deal of time and effort to trying to bolster the morale of our players. They have also done their best to improve the much-needed school spirit. To all stu- dents who have helped us in trying to carry out our purposes, we extend our sincere appreciation. Senior cheerleaders who are leaving Punchard this year are ' Fonnie Golden, Arlene Pariseau, and Margie Retelle. It has been a great privilege being Captain during the school years 1951-1952 and 1952-1953, and an honor that I shall always treasure. Captain of the Cheerleaders, Margie Retelle. SOFTBALL TEAM Josephine Collins, Lorraine Lees, Anne Lord, Marilyn Early, Marcia Cotton, Mary Fountain, Judith Nowell, Marlene Bajak, Mary Belka, Mary Lord, Janet Svenson. 55 FOOTBALL Back row: Coach Edward Doherty, Thomas Callahan, WilUam Vickers, Richard Luminello, Paul Ostrowski, Ernest Clegg, Richard Janes, Connie McCarthy, Assistant Coach Robert Mclntyre. First row: John Watson, Bruce Stewart, Donald Lavigne, Roger Barous, Co-Captain James Dolan, Co-Captain James Gemmell, Bruce Douglas, Richard Hudgins, Louis Mirisola, Raymond Reed. The Puncharci High School team, the Blue Devils, attained its most impressive record in recent years during the 1952 campaign by winning eight games and losing only one. Ed Doherty, former Arizona State Tempe coach, took the coaching reins from Walter Roberts who had resigned from Punchard to coach at Belmont High School. Bob Mclntyre again served as an able assistant coach. The Blue Devils rolled over Chelmsford, 18-0, in their opening contest. Only a long forward pass from Lou Mirisola to co-captain Jim Gemmell saved Punch- ard from defeat the following Saturday with Maynard. Offensive stars were Roger Barous, Alan Wadman, and Tony Sullivan; the entire defensive forward wall was outstanding. The Punchardites suffered their only loss of the sea- son to the strong Danvers team, 33-8, the next Saturday. However, the Blue and Gold redeemed itself in its vic- tory over Reading with a strong second half comeback, winning by a score of 27-26. Ray Reed became the hero of the day when he blocked the tying point-after- touchdown attempt. Don Lavigne, Bruce Douglas, and Bruce Stewart all blocked well in the forward wall for Punchard. Another strong second half enabled Punchard to win over Ipswich, 27-13. Barous, Wadman, Sullivan and Mirisola shared the offensive honors. Co-captains- elect, Paul Whitley and Paul Ostrowski with Dick Hudgins, co-captain Jim Dolan, Ray Reed, and Jack Watson kept the defensive unit together. The team won its sixth and seventh victories by beating Stoneham, 6-0, and Lexington 16-6. A revised backfield, made up of Whitley, Barous, Reed, and Mirisola, was used in the latter game and was very impressive. Winning by the biggest margin over a Methuen team since 1912, the Blue Devils swamped their rival, 48-0. Barous and Sullivan both scored twice and Whitley, Reed and Wadman each registered once. Punchard retained permanent possession of the V.F.W. Memorial trophy by winning. Punchard ended a very successful season by whip- ping Johnson, 41-14. The entire varsity played without error throughout the game and scored almost at will. Barous scored twice while Sullivan, Whitley, Wadman, and Pigeon each scored once. At the annual Football Banquet, coach Ed Doherty awarded the Varsity Club Plaque to Roger Barous, Jim Dolan, and Ray Reed for their outstanding work dur- ing the year. Other seniors not perviously mentioned were: end, Larry McKenzie; tackle. Jack Rose; backs, Ray Nolin and Ralph Sharpe. Ed Doyle was a very capable man- ager for the team fot the third successive season. 56 TRACK Back row: William Kneath, John McCabe, William Byers, Eric Berger, Robert Rose, Ralph Sharpe, Glenn Peatman, Alan Swartzinberg, Arthur Swartzinberg. Middle row; Conny McCarthy, David Martin, Larry Lynch, Raymond Doyle, Donald Lavigne, Roger Barous, Bruce Stewart, John Cole, Norman Comeau, Robert Hesse, Mr. Robert Mclntyre ( Coach ) , Front row; David White, Robert Hutchinson, Brooke Roberts, John Lawrie, Walter Potvin, Thomas Callahan, Peter Nelson. Absent; Randall Hurley (Captain). WINTER TRACK A total of thirty-three boys were issued equipment for the winter track season. Regular dual season meets were held, but the big event of the winter season was the state meet in the Boston Garden. The team did well at the outset of that meet, but fell behind later on. However, Jack Lawrie took first in his event and Jack Cole took second in the shot put. Some new boys reported for the winter season and many of them did very well. Among them were Paul Ostrowski, who competed in the half mile; Billy Kneith, who ran the mile; and Tom Callahan, who ran the shorter distances. There was only one Punchard record broken this year. Jack Cole achieved that honor by throwing the shot put over forty-seven feet in one meet. By Lightning and Thunder. SPRING TRACK spring track officially opens on March 23rd and a large turnout of boys is expected. The team will have nine or ten dual meets including a practice meet with the Lawrence High Varsity track team. In addition to the dual meets, the team will compete in the Essex County Meet in Lawrence, the Gloucester Invitation Meet, and the State Meet in Boston. The yearly trip to Amherst for the relays will have to be dropped because it comes on the same day as the Gloucester Invitation Meet. At the present time it looks as though the fol- lowing boys will do well: in the 100 and 220, Ray Yancy should prove satisfactory; Jack Lawrie, state champion in his class, and Buzzy Simpson should fare well in the 440; Paul Whitly and Bruce Stewart seem to have taken care of the 880; in the mile, Brooke Roberts should do well if a previous injury does not bother him; in the broad jump and high jump, Buzzy Simpson, Pete Nelson, Ray Yancy, and Randy Hurly will compete; Randy will also be the number one hurdler; Jack Cole, who placed second in the winter state meet. Jack Rose and Ray Doyle should make a satisfactory trio in the shot put. These, in addition to some new boys, should give Punchard a good season in track. And one more thing! Mr. Preston, please keep your ol ' baseball team out of our way. Thank you, Lightning and Thunder. 58 CROSS COUNTRY TEAM This year ' s Cross Country Team consisted of six boys. They were: Randy Lightning Hurley, Jack Speed Demon Lawrie, Ray Thundering Doyle, Brooke ' Cannonball ' Roberts, Walter High Octane ' Potvin, and David Mig White. The team was without a coach due to the fact that Mr. Mclntyre, the regular track coach, was assisting in football at that time. Nevertheless the team scheduled several meets and ended its season with the State Meet in Boston. They scored heavily in all their meets; how- ever, there is one drawback — in Cross Country, the team with the fewest points wins! It would be unfair to single out any boy for his ex- cellence in Cross Country. Many thanks must go to Dr. Brooke Roberts, however, for his applications of that much wanted liniment. Though the team did not do poorly, there is sincere hope among the boys that someday Cross Country will have a full time coach, and in typical Punchard fashion — a winning team. BASKETBALL Back row: Phillip Spinney (Manager), Anthony Sullivan, George Adams, John Rose, Richard Hud- gins, John Carver, Edward Doyle. Front row: John Watson, Paul Whitley, James Dolan (Captain) William Stack, Raymond Yancy, Louis Pigeon. Composed of four starters from the 1951-1952 squad, the Punchard team, coached by Ken McKiniry, fought a terrific campaign and accumulated eighteen victories without one defeat. The Blue Devils, hitting with unerring accuracy, gave a brilliant display of foul shooting, showed adept- ness at backboard control, and completely outclassed the majority of their opponents during the regular season. The six Seniors on this year ' s squad were Jimmy Dolan, Captain and play-maker; Jack Watson, rebound artist and one of the high scorers; Eddie Doyle, small and aggressive forward; Tony Sullivan, a great all- round player; Jack Rose, with spirit to match his size; and Dick Hudgins, tall center. The six Juniors forming the nucleus of the team were Paul Whitley, Billy Stack, Ray Yancy, Louis Pigeon, Jack Carver, and Jimmy Adams. Paul Wennik, a sophomore, was the thirteenth man on the squad. In spite of the earnest efforts of the Newburyport five to end our victory streak, we emerged with an unblemished record. The Junior Varsity team, coached by Bob Collier, also made a good record which was tarnished by only three losses. They will probably lose a few of their players to the Varsity team next year, but there are more potential stars coming up which assure us of having a good team in the future. 1 1 61 Punchard was invited to the Eastern Massachusetts Tech Tourney in Boston Garden for the seventh consecutive time this year. Much to the dismay of the some two hundred fans who traveled confidently to the Garden on March 10th, our cham- pionship team suffered its first bad day of the season, losing to its quarter-final oppo nent, Marshfield, by 35-46. It was the first MfiiTv; -? year for Marshfield, ' another unbeaten ? ' ? ' ' 4 iM ' S ' i i t ' iii« Lm, m Tourney play. « M ' i l?lF Tourney play TECH TOURNEY We had the dauntless Punchard spirit, but our shots were not swishing in with their usual regularity. Playing their last high school game were Jimmy Dolan who compiled his highest point total per game. Jack Watson who shone defensively, Tony Sullivan who was as usual an outstanding forward. Dick Hudgins and Jack Rose, who are also graduating this year did not get an opportunity to play in this last game of the season. BASEBALL ' Take me out to the ballgame; take me out to the park. Where Punchard is overcoming the opposition with its usual zest and spark! The 1952 season closed with the Blue Devils in a deadlock with Wilmington for top honors in the Mer- rimack Suburban League. Another honor was that of winning the title of The Little Three by whipping both Methuen and Johnson High Schools. In reward for this fine record, the Punchardites, under Walter Roberts ' coaching, advanced to the Eastern Massachu- setts Small Schools Baseball Play. As a result of its 7-5 victory over Ipswich in the opening round of the tour- nament, the team opposed St. Mary ' s High School of Brookline in the semi-finals. Led by Captain Alan Wil- son, Punchard was on the short end of a 5-0 score in spite of its great effort. Bill Ronan came forth with a good fastball, and backed by pitcher Don Millais and with Larry Lynch or Bill Beardsell behind the plate kept the batters busy. Ray Reed, Jim Dolan, and Paul Wennik, a trio of nifty fly-catchers, were a potent factor in the success of the team. Paul Ostrowski, Jim Murray, Roger Barous, and Eddie Doyle made a combination in the infield that was hard to beat. Roger Barous was top-hitter for the season, finish- ing with a batting average of .384. Jim Murray was second with a mark of .333 while Bill Beardsell fol- lowed closely with an average of .324. Although Alan Wilson, Jim Murray, Bill Ronan, Bill Beardsell, Dick Bramley, and Don Millais left the team with the graduating class of ' 52, the veterans Jim Dolan, Ray Reed, James Gemmell, Larry Lynch, Paul Ostrowski, Paul Wennick, and Co-captains Eddie Doyle and Roger Barous are expected to keep playing good ball. For the ' 53 season, the Punchard nine are under the wing of a new coach, Richard Preston, who has re- placed Walter Roberts. Keen attention will be paid to boys who have played limited ball, but who are ex- pected to draw varsity positions this year. Underclass- men in this line are: Richard Lawrence, Billy Vickers, and Bill Watson. Additional Seniors will be Dick Hudgins, Robert Erler, Edwin Brogan, Peter Nelson, and Jack Watson. Prospective pitchers for this year are Jim Gemmell, Dick Hudgins, John Murray, with Tommy Pearl, Larry Lynch, and Jack Carver backing them as catchers. All in all the 1953 season promises to be one of the best Punchard has ever had. Compliments of ANDOVER PLAYHOUSE ROBBIES R. J.
