It is accomplished by patience on the part ol the instructor and diligence on the part of the student. It is the result ol acquiring from our instructors as much as possible from their wealth ol lcnowledge and practical experience. A great deal of credit must be given to our class advisers, Mrs. Adams and Mr. Plutz, lor their invaluable aid in helping to arrange our social aI'lairs and lor conducting them in a satisfactory manner, As we leave then, diplomas in hand, let us always remember our alma mater, the lcnowl- edge we have gained, and the man who made all this possible. . Qne of the traditions of the club is to have a party at the beginning ofthe school year, The upper classmen choose little sistersi' from the freshmen group and see to it that the freshmen have a good time. A few evening dances are given to which boys may be in- vited, and at the end of the year, a tea is given in honor of the departing graduates, For almost twenty-five years the Club has established a feeling of friendship between the girls. May it continue to do so in the years to come. Alice Fabrie I l A'Society does not exist for itself, but for the individual, and the girl goes into it, not to lose, but to fin d herself. Everything is straightforward and sprung from the heart, -Lucero. Xl GLEE CLUB Probably one ol the most popular clubs of Pullman lech. is the Glee Club. Such interest was shown that it was necessary to limit membership to juniors and seniors only. These enthusiastic students meet once a weelc under the able direction of Celia Vander Meer Kastelyn to sing and study music. Composed of upper classmen, the Cnlee Club helps the morale ol the school by singing at assemblies and putting on special programs, Those in the Glee Club expand their lcnowledge in the Field ol music and at the same time derive a great deal of enjoyment from the singing. This year, instead of its usual operetta, the Glee Club presented a successful variety show. This consisted ol a minstrel show given by the boys and a comedy act called Cindy Swings lt by the girls. A short operetta was also given, plus a few specialty acts and stunts. The club has no ollicers, and members are retained in the club only lor their talent and their willingness to cooperate. We all owe our thcinlcs to Mrs. Celia V. Kastelyn for her patience and deep interest in the Pullman Tech. Glee Club. CGfOle PfOI'1d 38 l ? ' It THE LOWDEN DEBATING CLUB This year celebrates the twenty-sixth year of the Lowden Debating Club. The club has been under the able guidance of Mr. Sawyer, faculty adviser, for the last sixteen years. The club derived its name from the late Franlc O. Lowden, former governor of lllinois, and former President of the Board of Trustees of our school, Debates are held every other Wednesday on topics of importance, followed by several extemporaneous speeches. Students who partalce in the debates gain the ability to spealc and thinlc intelligently before groups of people. Carol Knoll H I - Y During its existence the l'li Y has never had a definite name. Last year the boys and Mr. Royster, our sponsor, decided on Centaurs . This year the boys are oing all out for this name. The name f'Centaur was derived from Greelc mythology. The Centaurs were half man and half horse creatures supposedly the bravest and smartest men of their time. Clur gray and maroon l'li Y sweaters feature the Centaur emblem on an oval baclt- ground. As the year draws to a close we seniors wish to express our thanks to Mr. Royster for giving us so much attention and cooperation throughout the year. During the year the boys all worlted hard to attain the l-li Y purpose which is to create, maintain, and extend throughout the school and community, high standards of Christian character. FOOTBALL SEASON On August 3'l, when Pullman Techfs gridders met for the first practice of the season, it was the first time in twenty years that Mr. Cummings did not greet them as football coach, although he continued to act in the capacity of Athletic Director. Mr. Gembler, the new coach, was greeted by a group of forty hopefuls and began preparations for the first game of the season. When the season ended, this same group of forty boys had made a fine record, having won the North Central Prep Conference championship and having placed second in the Mid-West Prep Conference, losing out by only a single point to Culver. The only other loss of the season was in the opening game with Calumet l-ligh School and this left the team with a splendid record of seven won ond two lost. After two weeks of drill, the squad was hardly ready to taclcle such a tough opponent as Calumet High, but made a fine showing against the heavier and more experienced op- ponents only to lose a six to nothing game. This loss, however, was not considered a ser- ious one, since the team had had little preparation. Lilcewise, it gave indications of the greatness of the team for the future. The following Saturday, Tech. traveled to Loclcport and there captured the first win of the season by an 'l8 to nothing score. Loclcport proved to be a very capable opponent and it was not until the last few minutes of the game that our team was able to show any decided advantage. The third game of the season found the team traveling to lndianapolis to battle with Parlc School. Parlc had an experienced and heavy team and it was only through improved 48 play by the Tech. team that they were finally able to win out a 13 to nothing victory. Park later on proved why they were such a tough opponent by tying Lake Forest Academy and coming within a few points of beating Culver. Back on our own field to play the fourth game of the season against Onarga Military Academy, the team began to show its first real signs of strength and although Onarga proved to be a strong opponent, the team came through with a 39 to 6 victory. Most all of the players on the squad had an opportunity to play in this game and all showed to good advantage. The fifth game of the season was one of the highlights when we traveled to Delafield to take on the usual strong St. John's Military Academy. This game proved definitely that our team was to be reckoned with in determining the championship of the Mid-West Prep Conference and after one ofthe hardest fought games of the season, the team came through with a 13 to 6 victory. It was the first time in a number of years that Tech. had defeated St. John's on their own field. lhe following week, we met a weak and inexperienced Roosevelt Military Academy team on the home field and piled up a 52 to nothing victory. The first team played but one quarter of the game and scored three quick touchdowns. From that time on, the second and third teams took over and did almost as well. 'lhen on October 96 came l3ullman's toughest game of the year, the Culver Military Academy. This game played before a large homecoming crowd was the deciding game for the Mid-West Prep championship. The game was fought on an even basis for three quarters, but early in the final period our team was able to put over the first score and when the try for point foiled, led 6 to nothing. Culver then put on a determined rally and with but a few minutes to go, scored the tying touchdown and seconds later, kicked the extra point which meant the game and the championship. The following Saturday, we traveled to Morgan Park to tangle with our rivals for the championship of the North Central Prep Conference. Morgan Park had not lost a game during the season and fully expected to win this game. However, our team showing a remarkable comeback after the discouraging loss to Culver, played heads-up ball and with a terrific fighting spirit upset Morgan Park with a 6 to nothing victory. ln this game, Nick Adduci scored the only touchdown on the second play after the opening kick off and the team played a defensive game to hold on to its margin of victory and the championship. The final game of the season saw the Tech. team in its greatest display of power during the year. Lake Forest Academy, formerly coached by Mr. Gembler, came to our field fully expecting to win and retrieve a possible chance for the championship of the Mid-West Prep Conference. Our boys, however, were waiting for this one and were keyed to the limit to win. When the first 'half ended, our team walked off the field with a 39 to 6 lead and the Lake forest team was a thoroughly discouraged group. ln the final half, we sacred two more touchdowns to make the final score 46 to 6. For Coach Gembler and the squad, this was a most pleasant year. The boys at all times showed a fine cooperative spirit and by their faithful attendance at practice and hard work, were able to make this one of 'l'ech.'s finest saesons. The student body, likewise played a most important part in building up this fine spirit and on our trips to St. Johns and Culver, several bus loads accompanied the team to cheer them on to victory. A great number of the squad will be lost by graduation but with seven returning lettermen and a number of younger boys showing a great deal of promise, we are looking forward to another fine season next fall. 49 First Row: Grazian, Forte, Dellce, Cfracco, Spiller, Linclstrom, Volette, Paglia, Skinner, Van Prove Second Row: Yulcnis, Lucas, Adduci, Fritz, Gatto, Surma, Ponseigo, Patterson, Gorslci.
