A STRONG NATION A nation is strong only to the degree that its citizens are strong. This is especially true of a republic. You remember the story ofa father who asked his sons to break a strongly tied bundle of rods. Each tried but could not break the bundle. The father then untied the fastening cords and easily broke each rod. l-le thus taught them that their individual strength, though small, could become an unbreakable union. Every citizen can demonstrate his patriotism by developing his own talents, by controlling his own selfish aims, and by working with others for the welfare ofthe group, whether city, state or nation. William C. Brubaker. MR. BRUBAKER To our dean, Mr. Brubaker, who has ever been our friend and adviser, who has always found time to listen to our problems and offer helpful suggestions, we, the graduates of 1944, wish to ex- press our deep gratitude for his kind assistance.

Because so many of his former students are in the service of our country, the editors thought it appropriate to print a photograph of our Principal taken in Peri- gueux, France in 1918. Captain Urban G. Willis Company C+335th Infantry, U. S. Army TO THE CLASS OF 1944 As Shakespeare said, The times are out of joint, and there is not much that you or I can do about it. Present conditions are not of our making, but we have to make the best of them, and do our duty day by day. These abnormal conditions are strewn with dangers and pitfalls for you young people, whether you enter the service of your country or private employment. Only a determined attempt to preserve, so far as possible, a sound and sane outlook on life, a devotion to duty, and looking forward to and preparing for a more normal and more satisfying life after Fighting ends will sustain you in these difficult and troubled times. Urban G. Willis. 10
