Through the years the world changes within, lvlolded by Youth's pliant hands. Qur tools lie sharpened, ready for toil, Qur schooling is almost completed. While the springs of 'lime will slowly uncoil, Lile's evils will be slowly depleted. Stronger are we in the right to bear arms, Surer, LiFe's chasms to breach. Firmer we are 'gainst surprising alarms, And bolder with freedom ol speech. Yet Youth is as fragile as snow in the sun, Qur morals can be turned and disrupted. Unless armored by a Faith not undone, We will leave a world more corrupted. So gird yourselves with aims that are sure, Fare Forth to a world in great need. Better what you are best able to do, Sow for good harvest a better seed. Annette Wyma. . DEDICATION Many years belore we came to Pullman 'leclm lie was lnere, and lie is lwere today. l-lis small otlice, vvitli its air oi friendliness, is always a place ol activity. To teaclwers and students alil4e, lie lias given lreely ol l'1is time and ellort, As evidence ol our deep and sincere gratitude and admiration, vve, tlie class ol 1944, dedicate tliis edition ol tlie Pullman Annual to our auditor, Mr. ,lames E. Dickinson. 9 Because so many of his former students are in the service of our country, the editors thought it appropriate to print a photograph of our Principal taken in Peri- gueux, France in 1918. Captain Urban G. Willis Company C+335th Infantry, U. S. Army TO THE CLASS OF 1944 As Shakespeare said, The times are out of joint, and there is not much that you or I can do about it. Present conditions are not of our making, but we have to make the best of them, and do our duty day by day. These abnormal conditions are strewn with dangers and pitfalls for you young people, whether you enter the service of your country or private employment. Only a determined attempt to preserve, so far as possible, a sound and sane outlook on life, a devotion to duty, and looking forward to and preparing for a more normal and more satisfying life after Fighting ends will sustain you in these difficult and troubled times. Urban G. Willis. 10 A STRONG NATION A nation is strong only to the degree that its citizens are strong. This is especially true of a republic. You remember the story ofa father who asked his sons to break a strongly tied bundle of rods. Each tried but could not break the bundle. The father then untied the fastening cords and easily broke each rod. l-le thus taught them that their individual strength, though small, could become an unbreakable union. Every citizen can demonstrate his patriotism by developing his own talents, by controlling his own selfish aims, and by working with others for the welfare ofthe group, whether city, state or nation. William C. Brubaker. MR. BRUBAKER To our dean, Mr. Brubaker, who has ever been our friend and adviser, who has always found time to listen to our problems and offer helpful suggestions, we, the graduates of 1944, wish to ex- press our deep gratitude for his kind assistance. Their help in the worlc ol the class organization, in raising money, and in social activities has been invaluable, and has contributed greatly to the success and pleasure ol the class in our junior and Senior years. Mrs. Neubauer has been instructor ol physical training lor eight years, and Mr. Sawyer has been instructor ol Mathematics lor twenty-lour years, Qur thanlcs to Mrs, Neubauer and Mr, Sawyer. TO THE CLASS OF 1944 Qur lour years in Pullman Tech. have been the most dillicult and momentous years ol our generation. When the storm clouds suddenly brolce and we were plunged into total war, most ol our habits ol thought and life had to be adjusted to the new situation. The boys had to thinlc ol an indelinite postponement of their vocational life, ol spending this time in the direct service ol their country. The school has striven to prepare you lor your vocational life, and to give you Discipline: the ability to obey orders, to cooperate in team-worlc, Sell Control: the ability to do what is right while Hon your own , Leadership: the ability to intluence and control others. These are the things most needed lor your country and yoursell. We leel that you have been successful to a large degree in learning these lessons, and will carry them into a successful future. l want to add a word ol special appreciation to the girls ol the class, for their Fine co- operation in everything we have undertaken as a class. You chose a wonderful motto to live up to when you chose Let us be judged by our deeds. CARL W. SAWYER. 15 SIMILARITY The pages may be clean and white The cover colorful and brightj And yet sometimes the lines you read Do NOT contain the help you need. The pages may be yellowed-torn- The cover colorless and worn, And yet the knowledge hidden there ls joy and wealth loeyond compare. S. 1944 bound for the port of Graduation with Mr. Willis at the helm and Mr. Brubaker as chief petty officer Cto keep order below decksj It was smooth sailing until we hit a storm in which many of the crew became sea sick and were therefore put ashore. At Sophomore land we stopped for refueling and then watched the new crew being put aboard. They were a really green lot. The following September we steamed out of port bound for Juniorville. The voyage passed as did the last except that on nearing Juniorville the captain decided he needed help in charting our course so he appointed Mrs. Neubauer and Mr. Sawyer as navigators. The crew elected William Chechar as the first mate and Dorothy Thomas as second mate. ,lean Whyte kept the log and Robert l-loogervorst sat on the treasure chest. We steamed into Juniorville with flags waving and the crowd cheering with all its might. For the fine work we had done we were given three months liberty. At the end of that time we set sail for Seniorpoint. Before we had traveled many miles out of port the crew elected Russell Morache as first mate, Marguerite Thomas succeeded Dorothy as second mate, and Eleanor Trencan kept the log with Thomas Menn to guard the treasure. This voyage proved enjoyable to all because of the many social functions always going on. On crossing the equator the first mate relinquished his post to Robert l loogervorst while August l'-lertl became second mate with Betty ,lean Dal Santo as keeper of the log and Lorraine Odziomek became custodian of the treasure. The winds were so favorable we reached Seniorpoint ahead of schedule. At Seniorpoint another liberty of three months was granted after which, we started on the final lap of our voyage. With our goal so close, it was heartbreaking to say goodbye to those of our companions who were placed on shore duty and could not finish this eventful voyage with us. Once at Sea we worked harder than ever before getting the ship ready to steam into the port of Graduation. But don't think it was all work and no play, for we did give parties and dances and enjoyed them all. ln the last months of the voyage the crew decided to publish a book of their travels called the Spirit of '44 . A staff was appointed and work began. ln the meantime Robert l-loogervorst handed his post as first mate over to Thomas Menn, and August l-lertl was succeeded by Edward Musial with ,lo Simoni and Marguerite Thomas succeeding Betty Jean Dal Santo and Lorraine Odziomek as secretary and treasurer respectively. On June 23, 1944, we sighted land, and on the 94th we landed. It is with tears in our eyes that we bid goodbye to the ship and our companions to find our places in the world. ln years to come we shall look back on these four years as the happiest of our lives. I tighten my shoe strings, roll up my trouser cuffs, I pull up my belt a few notches, and roll up my sleeves. As the clock strikes 12:30, the bell rings. With my Pullman Manual in one hand,I step gallantly into the mad rush for classes. l'm caught and whisked away like a feather in the breeze. Finally I reach myfirstclass. I get into my second class, but am immediately given my withdrawal. Llp and asking the reason why, I am informed that it is an X class and reminded that I am a Z student. On my way out I hear a shrill whistle, Out in the cold again. With a shrug of my shoulders I hurry in the direction of my third and final class. On the way I am interrupt- ed by a freshie asking if he may use the elevator. I tell him to go straight ahead till he comes to a windowand then jump out. So on and off throughout the day, Iwas pushed in classes and getting kicked out of them. But l always make a comeback and usually get into the classes in the end anyway. Every game played by the first team was lost. Only the Calumet game vvas well played. It was the last game for Leonard Winnick, and the team attempted to give him a good send off. The score of this game was 'l3 to 6, and as Calumet vvon the South Section Championship in the city league, it vvas quite on accomplishment. During the season, Tech. played and was defeated by Lockport, Culver Nl, Res., Qnarga lVl.A., St. klohn's lVl.A., Calumet l-LS., Morgan Park l-l.S., Morgan park MPL, Lake Forest Ac., and Fenger. ln spite of the poor record, some good came out of the season. Sixty-three boys were issued uniforms at the start of the season. Only four quit the squad during the season. This in itself is a record and if boys can take lickings and still stick to the job, they have acquired an admirable quality. Of the boys in the junior and senior classes who were on the squad, only nine were out before this year and had experience. Without experience in the older boys it is impossible to have a good team. But the team held together and it made a good fight, and more cannot be asked. Seniors William Chechar August l-'lertl-Capt. AFter losing to l-larvard in the First game oF the season the boys on this team attempted to help the First team. The age diFFerence was too much For them, as individuals, to play against the older boys. So the above games were arranged against teams their own age and in these games the boys showed real class. Against Thornton and Lake Forest this team played so well the opposition was helpless, as Tech, scored almost at will. The game against Fenger on Armistice day attracted a Fine crowd and it was a battle From start to Finish. Tech. came baclc For both scores aFter Fenger had talcen the lead. Players on the Tech. team For this game were: R. Vogt, B. Bandstra, R. lVlazan, G. Cummings, R. Miller, R. Sandona, A, Carollo, L. Zabrzenslci, L. Ponzani, V. Gorslti, V. Dal Santo, R. Zenere, E. FRESHMAN TEAM A team coached by Ed Zulcowslci and composed of all Freshman and three Sophomores out For the First time, practiced all season and played two games against Morgan Park lVl.A. Bantoms. This team won both games by scores of 7 to 6 and T8 to O, The boys played well in both games and Ed. and the team and the school can be justly proud. The excellent worlc oF these two above teams, Sophomore and Freshman , bids well For success For Pullman Tech. next year. 44 1944 BASKETBALL SEASON The same story holds lor basketball as was true of football-no experience in the players lrom the junior and senior classes. The team was composed ol two seniors and four sophomores Wagner, a junior, was lost after the second game of the season and playing without him was a decided handicap. ' Tech. did not win a game but improvement was so marked the latter port of the season, with a little luck some games could have been won. At the Mid-West Tournament at Lake Forest, Tech. played two Fine games against Culver and St. john's and received many compli- ments. john Dal Santo and Grant Cummings received honorable mention in the selection of the All-Tournament team. Next year Tech. will play a full conference schedule, and as all but two of the squad will be back much better basketball will be played, and games will be won. Several freshmen boys on the squad showed promise and will help considerably. LETTERMEN Seniors Juniors sophomores l-lenry Panozzo-Capt. For maximum success, therefore, safety training programs should start as early as possible in a man's work experience and should continue consistantly throughout employment. Procedures of teaching safety to new students and employees vary widely, but they all have the same purpose, namely, the prevention of accidents. lt seems that accidents occur more frequently to new employees than those of longer service. ln setting up a safety training program, it seems desirable to consider two phases: the first covering the period before employment, in school, and the second, the period after the employee actually commences work. Through the years its collection of fiction, literature, science, history, art, vocation, and religious boolcs has grown and offered numberless opportunities to the students. The library also subscribes to many magazines, and the selection is one that should appeal to every student. Study periods are held in the library and because of its quiet, friendly and cheerful surroundings, it is most appropriate. Because of Mrs. Bernice B.
