A place remains in our hearts, Where the years have been our best. That grand edifice upon the hill, Dear ole P. H. S. i 2 ]i Wl ' ! A jj in it d m S 4i McT.rPl i Mii i ' r JBt ' ll A 1 1,1 y Xwkubst Dedication If the world had no reliable people, we would surely find existence hard. Reliability, sincerity, generosity, and kindness have won you the admira- tion and respect of each and every student at P. H. S. We are grateful to you for your genuine desire to help others. You have been outstanding in all phases of school life at P. H. S. In recognizing your efficiency as an administrator, we must not forget your success in the classroom as a teacher of mechanical drawing. You have shown us that you are unfailing in accepting the responsibility given to you by others. You were at one time the sponsor of the Key Club. You have been fundamental in the success of our school newspaper. These are only a few of your contributions to our extracurricular activities. As a token of high esteem and an expression of our sincere appreciation of your unfailing interest in the students, we the staff of the 1966 Oriole dedicate this annual to you . . . MR. DEWEY S. WILSON 5 CLUBS With the rapid termination of this 1965-1966 school year, we have reached a significant milestone in our climb toward maturity and self- sufficiency. We must now start looking forward to the future, striving to reach and maintain the goals and ideas we have set for ourselves. Our future is held behind a variety of closed doors. To unlock any door it takes a key — the right key, the one and only key which will open that door. It is up to each of us, individually, to find that one key which will open his door to the future. Finding that one key will not be a simple task. Its nature is of such an essence that it can only be accom- plished through hard, determined work and a thorough knowledge of what one wants out of life. With this in mind, one can now begin to pattern his life so it will coin- cide with the goals he has set for himself. As the steps of his ladder are ascended toward these goals, the key which will unlock his door begins to take shape. Finally, the ladder is ascended and the key is ready to be fitted into the lock. With the opening of the door, the future path is now clear. — Frank Vass 7 8 9 The days of the one-room schoolhouse have disappeared as our world has become one of urbanization and consolidation. Although this early American tradition has fallen to the wayside, it has contributed many enterprising, men to our society. At this time the Oriole Staff wishes to pay tribute to one such man who has unlocked the doors of knowledge to many young people. After attending Hampden-Sydney College and graduating from the University of Virginia, he began his forty-year career in the field of education. Before coming to Pulaski, he served in other localities through- out Virginia as both teacher and principal. For the past twenty-five years he has served Pulaski as a top administrator of education. His contri- butions did not stop here, for he has also served as a past president of the Virginia Association of School Administrators. For his many contributions to the field of education, we the Oriole Staff wish to recognize — MR. FRANK J. CRITZER 10 JKem oriam MR. HERMAN L. RATCLIFFE THE GATE AT THE END OF THINGS Some people say the world’s all a stage Where each plays a part in life; While others proclaim that life is quite real, Its joys, its battles, its strife. Some say it’s a joke, we should laugh it along, Should smile at the knocks and stings; Whatever is true just take this from me, There’s a gate at the. end of things. Don’t try to kid yourself with the thought, You can do as you please all the while; Don’t think you can kick the poor fellow who’s down, While you climb to the top of the pile. Don’t go back on your pal, just because he won’t know, Oh, in his eyes you may be a king; Some day he will see you just as you are, At the gate at the end of things. Don’t think you can fool all the folks all the while, You may do it sometimes, that is true; They will find you out in the end every time, The only one you fool is you. If you see a man down, why, give him a hand, And find how much pleasure it brings, To know you are ready to meet all mankind, At the gate at the end of things. Live like a man, it don’t cost any more, To act on the square and be right. It’s reward enough to know you’re a man, To hear people say, “He’s right.” You can look everyone straight in the eye, And your voice has sincerity’s ring; Then you’re ready to go and pass through with the bunch, At the gate at the end of things. — Unknown Becky Hotz Associate Editor — Features Mrs. Edna Love Sponsor Lois Smith Layout Editor Wanda Pugh Associate Editor — Activities 12 Bobbi Poole Girls’ Sports Editor Wayne Hyatt Senior Class Editor Bob Palmer Boys’ Sports Editor Wanda Cruff Typist Su-Su Owen Margaret Ritter Typist Typist Mary Jane Austin Typist 13 Katie Flippin Assistant Editor Sue Bopp Sophomore Class Editor . These are the un- sung heroes whom we wish to bring to light; the bus drivers, the cooks, and the custodians. Qlnsung j feroes We wish to thank these people who provide transportation to and from school, those who prepare hot nourishing meals, and those who keep our school warm and clean. If it were not for these hardworking people our days at P. H. S. would not be as comfortable as they are. 15 As we leaf through the pages of this book, we find reason to reflect upon the happen- ings of this school year. The warm glow of friends’ faces, the hard work of academic achievement, and the discipline and sacrifice of goals reached have a special significance for each of us. With every backward glance there comes some form of evaluation. We think of the opportunities that school has afforded us and we ask ourselves, “What have we done with these opportunities ?” Most of us can re- flect with pride on our school experience, and yet, because of human frailty we can recog- nize many opportunities that we have passed by. Many would say that this is life, but it is also relevant to life, so relevant that success or failure hinges upon it. It behooves us all to be successful by taking advantage of op- portunity to better ourselves and the people around us. In a time when draft cards are being burned, when young people are marching and protesting without regard for the established forums available to them, it is with pride that I reflect upon this school year and our students here at Pulaski High School. I am grateful for my association with you and for the joys of this school year. I commend those members of our graduat- ing class who have reached a major goal in their lives. We are especially proud of your contributions to P. H. S. I am expecting much from you in days to come. Sincerely, William E. Porter PRINCIPAL MR. WILLIAM E. PORTER B. A.: Roanoke College M. S.: V. To those of you who have another year or more left in our school, I would hope that you will strive to make every minute of your school life count. To the seniors, I hope that your future may be a pleasant and happy one and that we may have in some small way through our examples, guidance, and instruc- tion helped it to be more complete. You have contributed much to your school and we are proud of you. To the faculty, I want to say thank you for the co- operation you have given Mr. Porter and me in the operation of our school. I hope you can look at this fine year book and say to yourself that this school year has been an accomplish- ment for each of you. Vice-President . . . Secretary 34 The Senior Class of 1966 will soon be closing the door of our high school days behind us and locking it with the key of memories. The memories of our days at Pulaski High School are something each of us will cherish and treasure forever. Proud were we, when we entered high school for the first time, even though we were “Punks”. Although it was a big change, it did not take us long to adapt and make many new friends. In some puzzled way we managed to move from the Eighth Grade to the seemingly more mature Freshman Class. We were thrilled when it was announced that our float had taken first place during Homecoming competition. As Sophomores, we felt a bigger part of Pulaski High School as we began participating in more activities. When we became Juniors, the feeling of being upper classmen was great. Our Junior year was brightened by the arrival of our long-awaited class rings, and climaxed by the Junior-Senior Prom. Although all of these are wonderful memories, they can not surpass those of our Senior year. The feeling of awe as we marched into our first assembly cannot be expressed. The fun we had the night of the Boys’ Beauty Contest and the day we decorated the class Christmas tree will always remain in our memories. The hard work we put into our Homecoming float proved worthwhile when for the second time in our high school career we received first place. These, along with the many other activities have made our Senior year unforgettable. Now, all too soon, our Senior year draws to a close. Baccalaureate and Graduation await the Class of ’66. Though we have had faithful guidance and teaching from all the faculty of Pulaski High School, we would like to especially thank now our Senior Class sponsors: Miss Suzanne David, Mrs. Edna Loftus, Miss Mayme McCoy, Mrs. Alzie Mode, Miss Dean Repass, Mrs. Joyce Robinson, and Mrs. Bessie Totten. We depart from Pulaski High School with fond memories of the past and hope for the future. Our hearts will often return to the halls and class- rooms where we showed our first signs of maturity. To those who pass this way in future years, we leave to you our heritage and a hope that your years will be as rewarding as ours have been. 35 Shelva Jean Akers Jean Lively spirit; That special dance. We were ably represented in the Miss P. H. S. Thus, our Art Club is com- posed of students who possess many abilities in the various fields of art. Each member has the common desire to further his skills and appreciation for the art found in every day life. Possibilities for the development of new talents are welcomed! The Art Club, taking part in the Home- coming Parade, entered a car designed as a huge top hat. Also, at the annual meeting with the Dublin High School Art Club, they had the privilege to see slides on the work of Mrs. Joni Punkowski, a very talented individ- ual who explained her work to the group. The club and all its projects would not have been possible without the guidance and coop- eration of its sponsor, Mrs. Love. They are led through their many activities under the very able leadership of their officers and sponsors, Mrs. Newman and Mrs. Clemmer. Monogram jackets in orange and black are worn by those young athletes who have par- ticipated and lettered in one of our major sports. Lettering entitles any sport’s partici- pator to membership in the Boys’ Monogram Club. The purpose of the club is to create good sportsmanship among the boys and between the schools. Led and sponsored by Coach Billips, the boys find that the club tends to build good morale. The end of the sport’s season is climaxed by the hosting of the Annual Awards Ban- quet whi ch honors the varsity athletes and cheerleaders. Posters, victory tags, and decorations are all signs of the Pep Club. Promoting school spirit and “pep” for school activities are also objectives of the club. Many methods are used to further school interest. During foot- ball season, the halls are filled with “victory” posters and the ball park is decorated for all home games. For Home- coming the gym was “dressed up” with orange and black streamers, banners, and an Oriole suspended from the rafters. Basketball, wrestling, tennis, baseball, golf, and track are also supported by tags, posters, and attendance. Climaxing the year is the Pep Assembly, this club’s an- nual original production. The F.T.A. seeks to enable its members to study and to identify the qualities, traits, and aptitudes which are basic to successful teaching. In order to meet the club objectives, the programs during the year have included speakers, tapes, films, and panel discussions. The chapter has been in charge of a bulletin board, participated in Teacher Appreciation Week, National Education Week, and has sponsored a candidate for state office.
