f 1 ff ' m The 1964 Oriole Volume XLIII 3 Published by the Students of Pulaski High School Pulaski, Virginia JOHN COKER Editor-in-chief REBECCA DOUTHAT Associate Editor BOBBY HILTON Business Manager STANLEY BENTLEY Associate Editor Ex IAbris WE, THE LEAVES As long as the tree will stand strong and ma- jestic, buds will burst forth into leaves to mark yet another season of joys and trials, successes and failures. Under the nurture and encourage- ment of the maternal tree, the arboreal leaves grow strong and — in turn — give what they have to the tree. Even though the leaves are of differ- ent size and design, each has its definite purpose. And the leaves are the beauty of the tree. Thus are we, as the leaves, born unto our tree — Pulaski High School — to draw from the never-ceasing source of knowledge and then offer ourselves — our diligence, our ambition, and our companionship — as our contribution to the stat- ure of the school. And we are the light and the life of Pulaski High School. Then as the season draws to a close, after one final fiery flourish of brilliance and color, the leaves silently slip from the tree and sail away into the pathways of tomorrow. — John Coker _j_xe: ! — i l. Among these are intel- ligence, understanding, patience, a sense of humor, fair- ness, and imagination. We, the Oriole Staff of 1964, have chosen to dedicate this year’s book to a teacher we feel has the best possible combination of these qualities. Through her obvious love of her subject, she has im- parted to us a great deal of knowledge and understanding. She has conducted her classes with the perfect combination of conscientious instruction and a humorous, easygoing manner. She is never too busy to lend an understanding ear to any personal problem. She graduated from Randolph-Macon Women’s College. In her ten years at Pulaski High School as a teacher, a senior class sponsor, an English teacher, and a friend, she has come to be recognized as a truly outstanding person. With great admiration and even greater appreciation, we dedicate this, the 1964 Oriole, to MRS. MARGARET D. BUSHONG. 10 Mrs. Margaret D. We are proud that we have students who have the desire and the ability to complete a task involving the quality and complexity of this book. In a day when an unfavorable im- age of teenagers is being formed with respect to behavior, moral standards, and attitudes, it is well that we have tangible evidence such as this to refute such unwarranted charges. Those of us who work with young people every day need no such evidence. We are proud to be associ- ated with them. Congratulations to the Annual Staff of 1963-64 and to the sponsor, Mrs. Edna Love, for a job well done. Sincerely, Kenneth E. Fulp PRINCIPAL Mr. Kenneth E. Fulp B.A. : Duke University M.Ed. : University of Virginia Each morning we are briefed on the day’s activities by our principal. 16 In thinking back over the school year represented by this yearbook, I am reminded of the opportunity I have had this year to work more closely with the faculty and the stu- dent body. There have been times of great joy as well as frustration as I am sure there are in any position of administration. To the seniors I would hope that high school has been a happy and rewarding experience but I think that this will be true only in relation to how much you have given to make it that way, I feel, as I am sure that most of you do that we have a good school and one in which we can justly be proud. We know that there is room for improvement and I challenge the underclassmen to set high goals for our school and work to attain them. Sincerely, Dewey S. SENIOR CLASS We, the Senior Class of 1964, look back upon each day we spent at P.H.S. as a ray of light, or a drop of moisture to a mighty tree. We now review these days, so essential to our whole lives ; the days of our budding into a new life, the days of enrichment and nourishment as we became a mature part of this organism. We remember well the happen- ings of our four previous years “on the hill”; the competition in the Homecoming parades, sports and pep rallies, the Junior-Senior Prom, and the highlight of our Junior year, our long-awaited class rings. While we hold these memories dear to our hearts, they can not surpass those of our Sen- ior year. Among these treasured memories are the unexpressable feeling of marching into assemblies, selling Christmas cards and magazines, decorating the class Christmas tree, the Boy’s Beauty pageant, all leading up to an unforgettable climax — The Senior trip. Yes, we have passed the spring, summer and winter of our season at P.H.S., and as we approach the fall, we feel that we are fully prepared to disembark from the tree and be- come a part of the world around us. We wish to thank all the faculty members for their help and guidance, but we especi- ally want to express our appreciation to our senior sponsors, Mrs. Margaret Bushong, Miss Suzanne David, Mrs. Edna Loftus, Mrs. Bes- sie Totten, and Miss Mayme McCoy. And now, as we approach graduation, w r e depart with fond memories of the past and hope for the future. Our thoughts will return often to these hallowed halls. This year we have experienced many new and exciting activities. We first sold station- ery in order to sponsor the Junior-Senior Prom. The most exciting experience was prob- ably that day in December when we received our class rings. Carolyn Powers and Gary Hall represented us in the Homecoming Court. We were well represented in the Miss P.H.S. Contest by eight lovely girls from which one — Valerie Atkinson — was chosen Maid of Honor. With the memory of our past experiences, we look forward to the great challenge of the future. We would like to thank our sponsors for the help they have given to us this past year. They are Mrs. Brockman, Mrs. Dodson, Mrs. Dula, Mrs. Farmer, Miss Gallimore, Miss Ledford, Mrs. Myers, Mrs. Newman, Mrs. Robinson, and Miss Simpson. 55 Robert Channie J. P.
