1 ' Le 1963 Volume XLII dulfisded 6y the students BILLY LOVELL Editor -in-Chief HENRY ALBERT Business Manager PATSY COOK Associate Editor MARY AGNES LIVELY Associate Editor 4 The year of 1962-63 quickly draws to a close, but the tide of time leaves a wealth of everlasting memories on the shore of life. Because everything is given a season and a time under the skies of heaven, its imprint can never be erased from that shore of God’s creation. Time has been given to us in a limited quantity ; therefore, we must make every moment a rewarding imprint upon the sands of the shore. As the sunset of time falls on the departing waves, may we receive the gifts of the tide. May we be blessed with a purpose for living and a season of rejoicing. Beth Byrd 5 V 7 5 2 JKemoriam JERRY WAYNE GOINS ( 1947 - 1962 ) Crossing the Bar Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar, When I put out to sea, But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark; For though from out our bourn of time and place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crossed the bar. Alfred Lord Tennyson 9 7)ec icaiion As classic grandeur remains an influence in all time, so a great teacher is a profound influence upon the tide of students that she instructs, instilling knowledge and under- standings into the minds that possessed them not before. As each individual is swept into the greater tide of mankind, he must find his place of service to others; we now recognize one who has found this place of service, one who exemplifies integrity, loyalty, and fidelity. Students and faculty members alike admire her scholarship; she has endeared herself to all as sponsor of classes, the Latin Club, the National Honor Society, and the Miss P.H.S. contest. Above all do we acknowledge her contribution as teacher of mathematics and Latin. Since we realize that these responsibilities have been fulfilled with wisdom, patience, and humility, we fondly dedicate this, our forty- second volume of the Oriole, to MRS. JUANITA ROBERTSON. 10 Jltrs. Juanita G. CRo ertson Mrs. Robertson and members of the National Honor Society decorate for the annual Miss P.H.S. contest. If I were a student, would I be proud to be represented by the students elected to the honors indicated in this book? The 1962-63 yearbook measures up well on both questions. The second of the above questions should give students cause to stop and think while engaging in extra-curricular activities. History has shown time and again that when a group of people take lightly the responsibility of voting for the best possible representative, they have lost the freedom to do so. When individuals refuse to direct their own lives, there is always somebody around who is glad to do it for them. And things do not seem valuable to us until we lose them. I am sure you will join me in expressing thanks to your Annual Staff and Sponsors for this yearbook. Few people know of the long hours they have spent after school, at night, and weekends to make this publication possible. Sincerely, Kenneth E. Fulp 16 I consider the opportunity of working more closely with faculty and students dur- ing the past year a privilege. To write that it was completely joyous would be incorrect, since the job of serving as an administrator- in a high school must rank near the top in both joys and frustrations. I am pleased with your spirit and the re- spect which the large majority of you have shown for your school, your classmates, and your teachers. However, since room for im- provement always exists, I trust that im- provement, for yourself and for Pulaski High School, will be your goal. Mr. Leon Clay B.S.: Y.P.I. Robert Buchanan 24 Gfa asses OFFICERS Beth Byrd Treasurer Ronald Vaughan President Senior As the tide of man and time ebbs, we the Senior Class of 1963 look in retrospect to our five wonderful years at Pulaski High School. Proud were we, when we entered the eighth grade, that we were coming to high school for the first time. As we have ad- vanced through the halls of Pulaski High School, we have grown quite fond of her and of each other. Now, near the end of our senior year, we look back on happenings that have made our stay at Pulaski High School a most reward- ing one. Since our freshman year we have placed in Homecoming float competition. Our junior year was highlighted by the Junior- Senior Prom and our class rings. For memories of our life at Pulaski High none can surpass those of our senior year. The feeling of awe as we marched into our first assembly cannot be described in words. We sold Christmas cards, the boys dressed as girls for a Boy’s Beauty Pageant, and we canvassed neighborhoods selling magazines. All these activities made our Jimmy Ward Secretary Yvonne Thompson Vice-President Gfass senior trip to Washington, D. C., possible. The class gave a decorated Christmas tree to the school. The senior class and a senior homeroom were first in the school’s Can Drive to aid the needy. Now soon — too soon — our year draws to a close. Baccalaureate and Graduation await the class of 1963. Though we have had faith- ful guidance and teaching from all the facul- ty at Pulaski High School, we would like to especially thank now our senior sponsors, Mrs. Margaret Bushong, Miss Suzanne Da- vid, Mrs. Edna Loftus, Miss Mayme McCoy, and Mrs. Bessie Totten. As we launch out to seek our separate fortunes in the sea of life, we leave these walls that echoed with our joys and our sorrows, these halls where first adulthood showed her face, these rooms where our hopes were born, to those who pass this way in future years. When again our solitary footsteps resound through these corridors, they will no longer be ours but theirs. To them we leave the heritage of Pulaski High School. Among our memories is our class project of selling stationery to raise money for the Junior-Senior Prom which we sponsored in honor of the Seniors. Another highlight of our junior year was the arrival of our long awaited class rings, giving us a real feeling of being upper-classmen. Our class was well represented in the Homecoming Court by Cynthia Vaughan and Jimmy Tickle. We were very ably represented in the Miss P.H.S. CJ ass Contest by Judy Gallimore, Jennifer Kirby, Judy Massie, Martha Rice, Charlotte Smith, Susan Tickle, Cynthia Vaughan, and Marie Worrell. Sop Jit omore GL ass Completing our third year in high school, we have begun to understand more fully the responsibilities that go with our progress. We find that hard work is needed to become successful at whatever we attempt. As soph- omores we have overcome every small dif- ficulty which has challenged our courageous determination to make our sophomore year a profitable one. Representing our class in the homecoming activities were Carolyn Powers and Gary Hall. One of the biggest highlights of the school year was the Miss P.H.S. Contest. We were proud to be represented by these six girls: Dottie Cassell, Nikki Combiths, Sara English, Sue Haga, Cary Sutherland, and Alice Wheeling. We wish to thank our sponsors: Mrs. Ruth Byrd ,Mrs. June Bloom, Mr. Donald Dobbins, Miss Emma Gallimore, Mrs. Katherine Keg- ley, Mrs. Alzie Mode, Mrs. Lalah Newman, Mrs. Betty Robinson, and Mrs. Sandy Tarter for their guidance throughout our sopho- more year. 61 cS op. The Student Council, consisting of the presidents of all home rooms, is the representative body that meets twice monthly to consider matters within the jurisdiction of the S.C.A. and also to make recommendations to the administration to improve the total school program. The Activities Council, composed of the highest elected student officer of any proper- ly sponsored school organization, meets monthly to discuss mutual interests and problems of school organizations. Heading the S.C.A. and serving both coun- cils in their respective positions are the elected officers and the faculty adviser, who make up the S.C.A. Executive Committee which meets daily. The Pulaski High School S.C.A. is active on a local, district, and state level, and con- sistently meets the requirements for a state achievement award each year. The S.C.A. in Virginia is guided by a state advisory Committee, which is headed by the S.C.A. Chairman of Virginia Congress of Parents and Teachers. A national organization is presently being formed, and the Pulaski chapter will become a part of the D.O. Clubs of America when that organization is complete. The D.O, Club had seven members this year, two of which were holdovers from last year. All the members were boys. Every student of the I.C.T. class was a member. In a very active year, the D.O. Club held monthly dinner meetings at the Mayflower Restaurant. Members were allowed to bring ond row: Lawrence Nukols, Treasurer ; Roger Hurd, Secretary; Richard Johnston, Vice-President. guests or dates to these meetings. The club’s annual Employer-Employee Banquet was held in May in honor of members’ employers. At the District Diversified Occupations Con- vention in Blacksburg, all the members par- ticipated in contests having to do with their trades and related study. The members’ employers were as follows: Carl Childress, Woodyard Auto Repair; Larry Hancock, Roger Hurd, and Lawrence Nuckols, The Southwest Times; John King, Pulaski Theater; Richard Johnston, Jay’s Radio TV Sales Service; and Wayne Lytton, W.A. Connor Studio. 92 The D.E. Club at P.H.S. was formed for the purpose of developing leadership, ideals, and professional growth in distributive edu- cation. It also provides social activities for D.E. students, who do not have time to par- ticipate in many of the school-sponsored social functions. The Pulaski High School Chapter of the Distributive Education Club of America had 21 members this year. Seven of these were in D.E. II, completing their second year of the two-year course. Every D.E. student was in the D.E. Club, giving it a 100% membership. The Club was very active this year. There were monthly dinner meetings at the May- flower Restaurant to which members were allowed to bring dates and guests. The meetings were highlighted by guest speakers and entertainment, good food, and door prizes. The Club attended the District DECA convention at Narrows High School in Feb- ruary, and participated in contests calling for skill in salesmanship, advertising layout and copywriting, display judging, and other functions of distribution. Gfu£s This year Pulaski High School formed three new science clubs to generate a higher interest among students taking science courses or those students whose interests lie in the field of science. These three clubs — chemistry, biology, and general science — have evolved from the old science club through the efforts of the faculty and an interested student body. To be eligible for club membership one must take or have completed science courses. Meeting during school hours, club members find it more convenient to participate active- ly in club affairs than in the old club meet- ing after school. The various science clubs allow for indi- vidual as well as a group development of ideas and projects. The clubs provide a sti- mulus for extra achievement among students in science courses as they sponsor the science fair for the display of scientific projects. These clubs render a valuable service to our school. 97 Spanish Carol Goggin, Span- ish Club Member, and Mrs. June Bloom enjoy trans- lating a Spanish story for a program during a recent meeting. The Hi-Y’s and Tri-Hi-Y’s clubs are stu- dent organizations closely related to the Y.M.C.A. To create, maintain, and extend throughout the homes, school, and commun- ity high standards of Christian character is the purpose of Y clubs. Y clubs conduct numerous sales during the year to aid in carrying out various projects. Light bulb and candy sales are the more extensive sales of the year. With funds raised from sales, the Theta Upsilon Tri- Hi-Y adopted a Korean orphan by supporting her in an Korean orphanage. Most of the clubs use their money to send delegates to the Blue Ridge assembly at Blue Ridge, N. C. The Y conference of the southern states is held at Blue Ridge every year. Classes are conducted to instruct delegates in the pur- poses of Y clubs and to teach them how they would be able to make their clubs more ef- fective. All types of recreation are offered to at- tending delegates. The convention is climaxed by a huge bonfire and fellowship among delegates. 1 1 1 First row : Jean Buckner, Reporter; Cynthia Vaughan, Chaplain; Nancy Morehead, Vice-Pres- ident; Betty Glenn, President; Charlotte Smith, Secretary; Susie Haggerty, Treasurer. I i I- The main objective of the Pep Club is to create school spirit among the students. In order to do this, they have engaged in many different activities. One of the most im- portant of these was appropriating money for publishing of football programs which were sold at home games. They also made posters for the football and basketball games and wrestling matches and cut out tags for the students to wear on the days of these contests. The Pep Club sponsored the Harvest Ball Dance, and an assembly on school spirit and sportsmanship. As a con- tribution to the school, the last year’s club gave money for the construction of Tennis Courts. Under the leadership of the presi- dent, Betty Glenn, and the sponsor, Mrs. Katherine Kegley, the Pep Club has carried out its objective with much enthusiasm. This record does not present the true ability of the team, because they sure gave the spectators some very thrilling games. The main defect in the ’62 season came in the Orioles trying to suppress the power of the competitors line with their speedy back- field. This proved to be unsuccessful, but once in the clear those backs of the Orioles were gone for the T. D. The ’62 season was mainly a rebuilding year for the Orioles, and with as many re- turning players as they will have, the ’63 Oriole squad should prove to be a speedy and powerful opponent for any team in the district. 114 r y Cjncfs Bill Phibbs, Senior Jimmy Alley, Senior Jimmy Palmer, Senior Ronnie Hubble, Junior Phil Pearce, Junior DuVal Anderson, Junior Jackie Ratcliff, Junior Roger Dean, Sophomore Charles Rhett, Sophomore Billy Lovell, Senior Donald Taylor, Senior Garland Earhart, Senior Ronald Powers, Sophomore Kenneth Carrico, Sophomore 1 15 i First row: Stephen Earhart, Gary Hall, Donald Harrell, Ronnie Pearce, Wally Kanode, Obel Rat- chiff, Edward Rhett, Bill Poole. After having won the district trophy in its 1961 season, our golf team made another superior showing this year. Although they did not again capture the district trophy they placed second in the district with Blacks- burg as the trophy-taker. The Pulaski and Blacksburg teams ended the season with tied records. This necessitated a playoff which was to be held at Pearisburg, a neutral course. As the last putt was sunk our team found that their chance of winning the dis- trict trophy had been lost by V-2 point. Our team will be hurt in the ’63 season by the loss of Bill Walton and Jess Crumbly who graduated after completing the ’62 sea- son. 121 First row: Larry Bishop, Mont Phelps, Jimmy Warden, Gary Herndon, Stephen Earhart, Buddy Rogers, Richard Aust, Clyde Moles. During the regular season, the Oriole squad broke even on wins and losses. Jerry Sutphin, a senior, on the 1962 squad, set two new records on the hurdles, one high hurdle record and one low hurdle record. After gaining this esteem, he went to the State Track meet and walked off with fifth honors in the hurdles for Pulaski. I Two other Pulaski men, Jimmy Warden and Lynwood Armbrister, were disqualified at the Regional meet; therefore, they were unable to continue to the State Meet. Pulaski High School had a fine season last year and this year the prospects of another one are very bright. 122 First row: Henry Albert, Varsity Basketball; Wayne Hodges, Eighth Grade Bas- ketball; Terry Quesenberry, Varsity Football; Jimmy Breedlove, J.
