Early in our lives we begin our search for the great treasure of the human mind, realizing that each year brings us closer to that splendid moment. At the end of a rainbow we will find our reward — our day of graduation. By receiving our diploma we will pledge to use it as a building stone in our life. We will pledge also to share the experience and knowledge that we will gain in these years of learning with all man- kind, thus making this a better world in which to live. Each time we see a rainbow let us recall those golden moments at Pulaski High School and remem ber that even after we receive our diploma our quest of achievement is not yet over. We must see the challenge of the future and the future that this challenge holds for us as graduates having found the End of a Rainbow. — Richard Patterson 2 3 Mrs. Margaret Perdue 1 ©ebtcatton After the shower of knowledge, many reflections of guidance give rise to the grandeur of the rainbow of success and true happi- ness. We, the Oriole Staff of 1962, wish to return a segment of this joy that has been so generously shared with us to one of the most outstanding people we know. Her beams are shed in many ways ; her gifts to us are countless. As an English teacher she was considered irreplaceable. While in her present profession she has earned the highest degree of esteem. A graduate of William and Mary College, she holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. She has also added to her store of learning with extra courses in science which she has taken at Rad- ford College, and courses at the University of North Carolina Extension and the University of Virginia Extension. In fifteen years at Pulaski High School as a teacher, a librarian, a sponsor, and as a friend, she has shown many the way to the treasure at the end of the rainbow. In this her twenty-fourth year of teaching, we should like to express our most sincere gratitude for the help which she has extended to us in such limitless ways. Thus it is with great admiration and even greater joy that we dedicate this year book to MRS. MARGARET PERDUE 5 Reflections of guidance radiate upon us from many sources. The Oriole Staff realizes this, and with such a realization we wish to pay tribute to another woman in Pulaski who has meant much to the youth here. She has served young people in various ways and in many different places. During World War I she worked in an orphanage in Fi ' ance, lending light to many less fortunate souls there. She has worked in the Pulaski County Schools and has served her community in unnumbered ways. Upon receipt of her Library degree from the University of North Carolina, she helped develop our library system in Pulaski. Since that time she has shown many treasures to us through books and through experiences of various travels that she has shared with us. Now, as a long deserved thank-you, we the Oriole Staff of 1962 wish to recognize special Recognition MRS. GRACE CARNAHAN 6 The senior class of 1962 approaches another magic moment — graduation. 7 Our ballgames are enjoyed by the young and younger as well. Reverence shown during our Christmas assembly. Who could forget those Pep Rallies as we cheered our team to victory. Will they ever finish those chem- istry experiments ? 8 Happy faces certainly reflect that old school spirit. Guidance was given us by Mr. Fulp and Mrs. Sanders. We entertained Pulaski with the Senior Play. Our busy annual staff! 9 Rah! Rah! KENNETH FULP B.A.: Duke University M.Ed.: University of Virginia Message to Students This is my fourth message in your annual to the students. There is always the temptation to strain for something new to say, and to steer clear of what has been said before. It must be remembered, however, that the eternal truths never change and that they need to be repeated again and again. Our main purpose in being here is to lead you to be a better person tomorrow than you are today. We do this by constantly holding before you a challenge. In the academic area, the challenge is to develop your learning abilities to the fullest. In your associations with other students and teachers, the ideal is to reach the time when each will respect the worth and dignity of the other. And for you as an individual, we hope to lead you to constantly raise the level of your aspirations, and to gain a clearer perspective of life through the development of a sound value system. As you look through this book, ask yourselves if it reflects your life at school as it is or as it should be. Words of praise are due the annual staff and sponsors, Miss Palmer and Mrs. Blankenship, for the many hours of work and effort put forth in publishing this yearbook. =: 16 Jt ' 17 i I; r : r i Mrs. Nancy C. Barbara Guynn, Betsy Herron, and Dennis Rorrer practice typing during study hall. 60 These scenes above are a few chosen glimpses from those steps we have taken along the path of the senior year. Our year has been comprised of many experiences: the fun of the Senior play, service in decorating the Christmas tree, study in the classroom, and the plans we are now making for the future. Thus our Senior year draws to a close. 61 CLASS OFFICERS: Dickie Leftwich, President; Mike Hooker, Vice-presi- dent; Margaret Sue Flippin, Secretary ; Jimmy Ward, Treasurer. Junior Class Our junior year is one of the most exciting years in our high school life. In the Homecoming Events our class float won second place while the Junior Tri- Hi-Y won third place. We were honored to have lone Leeson and Gary Fox represent us in the Homecoming Court. The stationery drive was most successful. The purpose of this project is to raise funds to present the Junior-Senior Prom in honor of the Seniors. We placed first in the Christmas Can Drive competition. Representing us in the Miss P. H. S. Contest were nine lovely girls, one of whom — Mary Agnes Lively — honored us in being chosen Maid of Honor. Class rings arrived just in time for Christmas. This was a great thrill for each of us. We will never forget our junior year and we will look forward with great anticipa- tion to being Seniors. We appreciate the help that our sponsors — Mrs. Kathryn Brockman, Mrs. Billie Farmer, Miss Ellen Palmer, Miss Lola Robinson, Miss Ruth Simpson and Mrs. Janet Young — have given us this year. 62 Henry Albert Jimmy Alley Sandra Alley Lynwood Armbrister Myron Aust Nancy Baker David Beamer Thomas Bentley Delores Berry Betty Bishop Ronnie Boothe B. We found that we have to utilize more of our time in study, because our success and happiness in later life depend on how we apply ourselves at Pulaski High School. We had a very good float in the Homecoming Parade and had some great times working on it. This year we were well represented in the Miss P. H. S. We were lost, but after a few days we felt at home. Changing classes six times a day and seeing six different teachers made our days seem shorter than ever before. We would like to thank the Guidance Department for helping to make our school future a great deal clearer. Even football games seemed more interesting; now we were a part of the school that the players represented. Our class election was exciting with many stirring speeches. Making our float for the Home- coming activities was an experience that none of the workers will forget. It was the first time we had worked together as the eighth grade class on a project. We were proud of our two representatives in the Homecoming activities. We were exceptionally happy also that the eighth grade was represented by a classmate at the Virginia Gen- eral Assembly. Our sponsors who have helped us very much are Mrs. Frances Bachant, Miss Laura Dalton, Mrs. Lloyd Burton, Mr. Howard Duncan, Mrs. Verdie Holt, Mrs. Ruth Hotz, Mrs. Mary Lindon, Mrs. Edna Love, Mrs. Juanita Robertson, Mr. Wilbourne Smith, Mr. Kenneth Stallard, and Mr. Walter Unruh. We can hardly wait for the time when we will become the freshman class and will have taken one more step toward the end of the rainbow. 86 Larry Adams Wayne Adams Jean Akers Robert Akers Alice Alley Carl Anderson Darnell Anderson Dorothy Anderson Patricia Anderson Deana Andrews Gary Andrews Larry Armbrister Bobby Arnold Janice Aust Jimmy Aust Ronnie Aust Mary Jane Austin Ben Ayers David Ayers Junior Bailey Bonnie Baker Lynn Banes Linda Barrett Deloris Becks Fred Bell Roy Berry David Black Margaret Blair Kathy Bogardus Peggy Boyles Jeanette Breedlove Elizabeth Britt Linda Brock Linda Buchanan David Burch Joyce Burch Becky Burchett Larry Burton Roger Burton Tommy Burton Connie Byrd Johnny Byrd Patsy Byrd Sue Byrd Richard Carrico Eddie Carrier Danny Carson Jewel Catron Brenda Cecil Barbara Chaffin Janice Chandler Pam Chitwood Dean Clark James Clark Linda Clark Norma Coleman Ida Collins Bobby Compton Delores Conley Thelma Conner Bobby Cook Doug Cook Mae Cook 87 David Corder Sheila Cowan Fred Cox Harriet Cox James Cox Michael Cox Nancy Cox Nancy Lee Cox Sherry Cox Wilma Cox S. The Student Council is composed of 42 home room presidents, the 5 SCA officers, and the SCA Adviser. It is the representative body of the Student Co- operative Association and meets twice a month to study and promote the best interests of the whole school. The Activities Council, which meets monthly, is composed of the highest elected student officer of any properly sponsored school organization. The Junior accompanist is Jean Buckner with Wanda Cruff as assistant accom- panist. The Chorus won first place with their floats both in the Homecoming and Christmas Parade. During the year they presented six concerts, among them being for the May Day Dance, Baccalaureate Sermon, and Graduation Exercises. One of the highlights of the year was their presentation of the Messiah. This event was well attended by local as well as out of town people. I oiball o arst Chills, thrills, and spills, the age old adjectives of football can well be used to describe the big Orioles’ football games this year. The Orioles had the best record since 1952, coming through with a 6-won 3-loss 1-tip- record and solid hold on third place in the district. Led by tri-captains, Terry Patterson, Gale Grantham, and Danny Akers the Orioles proved to be a rugged foe for all opponents. The highlight of the year was the Dublin game. The Orioles went into the game on the short end of the odds and came out on the long end of the score winning 20-13. This win proved to be one of the greatest team efforts in Pulaski sports. Tri-captain Patterson, running from a halfback position, captured sev- eral district records, adding spice to the Oriole season. He, along with center Jack Byrd, was named to the all district team. Patterson also made all-state. The Orioles led the district in offensive rushing. Coach Rockwell’s boys really fooled the experts. Rockwell, and every member of the Oriole squad should be congratulated on the fine job they did. With just three returning lettermen they really came through! Thus the big Orioles made our pot of gold richer by their fine efforts. Last year under the instruction of Coach Charles Tickle the Oriole golfers walked off with the district trophy. Tickle’s boys ended the season with a 6-2 won-loss record with wins over Blacksburg, Radford, Marion, Andrew Lewis, and Pearisburg twice. They lost once to Radford and once to Blacksburg. and all the Oriole every “pat on the back” they get for they took what was termed a minor sport and really put it in the limelight. This year with at least five hold- overs from last year’s squad we look for the Orioles to keep the district trophy right where it is, at Pulaski High School. Good luck, Boys! Coach Tickle golfers deserve resiling First row, Left to Right: Jimmy Hickam, Jess Crumbley. Second row, Left to Right: David Ratcliff, Bill Walton, Bobby Lemons. (golf Even though wrestling is only in its third year at Pulaski High School it is a fast rising sport. Last year the Oriole wrestlers didn’t win too many matches hut still provided lots of action for the fans. With several returning lettermen and some new faces the ivrestlers should have a good team. The team is led by Coach Jack Duncan, and and tri-captains Clyde Moles, Alfred Pearce, and Mike Jones. Yes, how could anyone forget the team that suffered a humiliating defeat only to bounce back to win the State Tournament and cap the season with a brilliant 22 won - 4 lost record ! The big Orioles had the best season ever, finishing the regular season with a 17 won - 3 lost record, and second place in the district. The Orioles were also runners-up in the district tournament, earning them the right to participate in the state tournament — and participate they did! In the opening round of the Southern Regional the Orioles knocked off Clint- wood. Then came an unexpected victory over de- i 1 c t ( 1 Mr. Carl Tacy Coach j tate (EfyamptouB fending state-champion Martinsville, and the had captured first place in this tournament. Next came the big game with Handley of Winchester for the state championship. Enough can never be said of the fine job Coach Carl Tacy did, as far as we at P.H.S. are concerned, he was basketball’s Coach of the Year. The team’s co-captains were Bill Walton and David Hurd. Both boys were named to the all-district first team, and Jimmy Palmer made the second team. This team, its coaches and managers have helped fill our pot of gold to the very top, and we say “Thank You” for making our rainbow complete. We at P.H.S. have as fine a coaching staff as one could find anywhere. These capable men have turned out some of the best, if not best, teams in P.H.S. history.
